River Fish
Current keeps rearranging the problem. These river-fish profiles look at where a species can hold, what it can eat there, how seasons move it around, and what changes when the river stops matching yesterday.
Everything filed under this heading, newest first.

Golden Trout Have a Tiny Native Map and a Coffee-Can Backstory
California golden trout are native to just two Kern-basin stream systems, and rainbow trout have been leaking into their genes for a long time. Even the state and federal agencies can’t agree on the scientific name.
Smallmouth Bass: Why They Sit on the Soft Side of the Seam
Smallmouth are river fish, but they don’t want the fastest water. They want the soft side of it — behind the boulder, off the riffle edge — where food shows up without the fish paying full price for the flow.
Alligator Gar and the Flood That Has to Show Up First
Every monster-gar photo shows you teeth. The part that matters is harder to photograph: a fish that can live past fifty and only builds a strong year class when the river floods the grass.
Rainbow Trout and Steelhead Are One Fish With Two Travel Plans
Oncorhynchus mykiss comes in two versions: the rainbow that stays in freshwater, and the steelhead that goes to sea and comes back bigger, on its own schedule, with its own conservation trouble.
Channel Catfish Hunt by Taste, So Bring Something That Smells
A channel catfish tastes with its whole body and does its best work in water too dark to see in. That’s why the agency pages all talk bait, and not one of them mentions a lure.
Walleye Fishing Starts With the Light, Not the Lure
Walleye eyes are built for dim water, and light moves these fish around more than most lure boxes want to admit. When the bite dies, check whether the light changed the useful depth before you change anything else.
Largemouth Bass Want the Part of the River That Quit Acting Like One
In one Florida river study, at least 92 percent of tracked largemouth locations sat in almost no current, every season. Skip the push and look where the river gives up: backwaters, weed edges, the soft side of a laydown.
Smallmouth Want Food Without Paying Full Price for It
A big boulder in current builds five or six places a smallmouth could sit, and the obvious pocket behind it is only one. Smallmouth pick the spot where food shows up for less than it costs to go get it.
Trout Need More Than Cold-Looking Water
A riffle can look perfect and be nearly empty. Cold water is only part of it — trout need oxygen, food coming past, a cheap place to sit while it does, and a landing spot that lets them go back in good shape.
Catfish Don’t Care About Your Secret Bait Recipe
That family-recipe catfish bait might be great. Most nights it’s tied to a rig sitting off the seam where nothing’s feeding, and no amount of smell fixes where it landed.
