Tide and Current

The tide table gives you a height. Fish answer to how fast the water is moving, which peaks at a different time — and that gap explains most bad coastal days.

High tide is a number. The fishing is in the slope.

Every tide app hands you the same two things: a time and a height. Most people read that as a schedule, show up at high tide, catch nothing for forty minutes, and decide the spot’s no good.

The spot was probably fine. The water had just stopped moving. Nearly everything that makes coastal fishing work depends on water going somewhere, and right at the top of the tide it’s going nowhere.

None of that is complicated. It’s still a big part of the gap between people who catch fish on the coast and people who own a very nice tide app.

Two words people use like they’re the same word

Tide stage is how high the water is. That’s what the app prints. Tidal current is how fast the water’s moving and which way. They come from the same tide and they peak at different times, which is the part nobody says out loud.

Think about what physically has to happen. Water rises because it’s flowing in, and it quits rising when it quits flowing. So on a simple stretch of shoreline the height tops out right around when the movement drops to nothing, and the movement peaks somewhere in the middle, when the water’s neither high nor low and nobody’s circled it on the calendar.

Same tide, two different lines. The height peaks at the marked circles; the movement peaks halfway between them, in the tinted bands. The water is highest exactly when it has stopped, which is why the top of the tide is so often the flattest stretch of the day. The useful hours are the middle of each stage, when the most water is being shoved past whatever you are standing on.

THE PART NOBODY CHECKS

Range decides how hard it runs.

Two heights get printed. Almost everybody reads the times and skips the difference between the two numbers, which is a shame, because the difference is most of the story. A tide that swings a foot and a half and one that swings six feet both take about six hours, so the six-foot tide has to shove four times as much water through the same creek mouth in the same amount of time.

Same spot, completely different day. A weak range means weak current, so the bait isn’t getting delivered anywhere in particular and the fish have no reason to set up and wait for it. A strong range is when the funnels actually work.

Range runs on the moon, so you can see it coming weeks out. The biggest swings land around the new and full moon, the smallest around the quarter moons. When somebody tells you a spot fishes best two hours before high, it’s fair to ask what kind of tide they mean, because two hours before a big high and two hours before a tiny one aren’t the same advice.

The practical move: before you commit to a day, subtract the low from the high. That little bit of math tells you more than the times do.

Then the wind gets a vote.

Current and wind are two separate forces acting on the same surface, and whether they agree changes the water more than either one does alone.

Wind blowing the same way the current runs stretches the surface out — longer, lower, smoother, and you cover ground quickly whether you meant to or not. Wind shoving against the current piles the same water into short steep faces with almost no gap between them. The wind speed is identical in both panels. The only difference is whether the two forces agree, and that’s the difference between a nice afternoon and an inlet you shouldn’t be in.

Wind with the current is comfortable and a little sneaky. You drift faster than you think and end up dragging a bait past fish instead of through them. Wind against the current is the loud one. It steepens everything, slows your drift to nothing, and in a narrow inlet on a big outgoing tide it builds standing water that’s genuinely dangerous in a small boat.

Neither one is automatically better fishing. Wind against can fish great, because the chop kills the light, which breaks up your outline and hides a leader. It just hands you a different set of problems, and the wind forecast won’t mention them because it has no idea what the tide’s doing.

What a running tide does to the place you’re standing

Moving water only matters because of what it moves past. Nearly every coastal spot is some version of the same trick: something narrows, and a predator sits where the food gets forced through.

Inlets and passes

The most concentrated version of the funnel, and the least forgiving. Everything in the bay has to leave through here on the ebb. Fish sit on the down-current side of anything solid and let the water do the searching. It’s also the first place wind against tide stops being annoying and starts being a safety problem.

Creek mouths and marsh drains

A draining marsh is a conveyor belt. Shrimp, crabs and small fish get flushed out of grass they can’t hang onto, and predators park at the mouth facing into the flow. It’s the most reliable falling-tide setup on most of the Atlantic and Gulf coast, and it works at almost any size, right down to a ditch.

Jetties and rock

Rock does two jobs at once. It makes a hard edge that concentrates flow, and it leaves a slack pocket right behind each point where a fish can sit without swimming. Look on the surface for the seam between fast and slow water, because that seam is the address.

Open beach and the surf

Looks like there’s nothing there. A running tide gives the structure away by what it does to the water — a cut through a bar shows as a flat gap in the breaking line, and a trough shows as a darker lane. Rising tide lets fish into the trough. Falling tide pulls them out through the cuts.

Flats

The one place where too much current is a real thing. Flats fish move with the water level more than with the flow — they push up onto the flat to eat as it floods and get pushed off it as it drains. The edges the water leaves last are worth more than the middle.

Piers and bridges

A row of pilings is a set of small jetties, each with its own seam and its own slack pocket. At night, lights add a second variable and the shadow line becomes the edge. Down-current of the piling, in the shadow, is a specific address rather than a general area.

THE PROCEDURE

How to actually plan a session around this.

1. Get the range, not just the times. High minus low. That number tells you how hard it will run and therefore whether the spot you picked will even work today.

2. Pick the moving hours and be there for them. Roughly the middle of each stage. If you only have three hours, spend them on the slope, not on the peak.

3. Decide ahead of time where you’ll be when it goes slack. Slack isn’t an emergency. It shows up right on schedule. Use it to move, eat, re-rig, or walk to the one spot that keeps running, instead of grinding the same water harder.

4. Find out the local lag. The current at your spot doesn’t necessarily turn when the height chart says it should. Deep in a bay or up a creek, the water can keep draining well after the printed low, sometimes by an hour or more. A height chart won’t show you that. You learn it by watching which way the weed drifts past a piling and writing it down.

5. Write down what the water was doing, not just what you caught. Two seasons of those notes beat anybody else’s hot spot.

A rising tide cuts people off from shore. Sandbars, jetty bases, marsh banks and rock ledges you walked out to on dry ground turn into islands, and the water between you and the way back gets deeper and starts moving. Before you walk out on anything, know what the tide’s doing and know your turnaround time. Then leave earlier than that.

Wind against a strong outgoing tide in an inlet builds standing waves far worse than the open water on either side. Small boats get in trouble there all the time. If it’s ebbing hard and blowing onshore, that’s your sign to fish inside today.

Wet rock, especially jetty rock with weed on it, is as slippery as ice. Studded boots and a plan for what happens if you go in are normal gear out there. Wear the vest.
