Do Solunar Tables Actually Work?

The moon really does matter to fishing, just probably not for the reason the tables give. A lot of the time, tide and light are doing the work the app gets credit for.

Solunar tables have been in print since the 1920s and in everybody’s pocket for about fifteen years. They hand you major and minor periods down to the minute, they look precise, and enough people swear by them that waving the whole thing off feels like being difficult for fun.

The more useful question is which part is well supported and which part is doing the selling. They aren’t the same part, and the difference changes how you plan a day.

What the theory says, and what’s definitely true

The original claim, from John Alden Knight in the 1920s, is that fish feeding tracks the moon’s position — strongest when the moon is straight overhead or straight underfoot (the majors), weaker at moonrise and moonset (the minors). Modern apps dress that up with sun position and phase weighting, but the backbone hasn’t changed.

Two things sitting right next to it aren’t in dispute at all.

The moon drives tide. Nobody argues that, and on coastal water the tide is usually the biggest thing deciding whether fish are feeding, because it decides whether food is getting delivered. That’s a real lunar effect on fishing, and it’s a big one.

Light level drives feeding. Also not up for debate. Dawn and dusk are real windows for a long list of species, for reasons that have nothing to do with where the moon is.

Hang onto those two. They’re about to cause the problem.

Solunar majors land when the moon is overhead or underfoot. That same moon sets the tide, so the majors never really stand apart from it, and for part of every month those overhead and underfoot times also drift across sunrise and sunset. So when the table calls a good hour and the hour turns out good, there’s often a better-established explanation standing in the same spot. That doesn’t prove the table’s wrong. It’s why it’s so hard to show it’s right.

What the evidence actually supports.

Honest summary: the research that’s looked for a solunar effect on catch rates, separate from light and tide, is thin and mixed, and mostly doesn’t find a strong one. Nobody has an accepted mechanism for the moon’s position acting on a fish apart from the light it gives off and the water it moves.

That’s a weaker statement than “it doesn’t work,” on purpose. Thin evidence isn’t the same as evidence that nothing’s there, and anybody telling you it’s settled in either direction is going further than the research does.

What you can say with more confidence is why it feels so reliable. If you fish the periods the app gives you, those are the hours you’re on the water — so every fish you catch lands inside a predicted window, and a window you never fished can’t hand you a miss to remember. Put those windows close to real drivers like light and tide, and you’ve got something that’ll keep confirming itself forever.

The moon effect that’s real and mostly ignored

This is the part worth walking away with, because it’s a moon effect, it’s well established, and almost nobody plans around it.

Moon phase sets tidal range. Around the new and full moon the sun and moon pull together and the tides swing hardest; around the quarters they swing least. On coastal water that decides how much water gets shoved through every creek mouth and inlet that day, which decides whether your favorite spots do anything at all. It’s a real lunar prediction, it runs on the same calendar as the solunar tables, and it’s a lot more useful.

Some species spawn on a lunar schedule. A number of fish time spawning to the moon phase, and the fishing around those events isn’t subtle. Worth knowing for whatever you chase, and it’s a documented moon effect, not a general theory of feeding.

So keep the moon in the plan. Use it for tidal range and spawning timing, where the mechanism is understood, instead of a two-hour window where it isn’t.

What to do with the app you already have.

Nothing dramatic. If the table gets you on the water at first light, it did you a favor by accident, and there’s no harm in that.

The change worth making is what you check first: the tidal range for the day and the times the current actually turns, where sunrise and sunset fall, and what the weather’s doing before and after. Those will fill your calendar with better hours than a major period will, and when they happen to line up with the app, fine — you were going anyway.

Then log it honestly, including the days you fished a major period and caught nothing. That record is the only thing that’ll ever tell you what works on your water, and it’s the one piece of evidence that doesn’t come with a subscription.
