Is It Fishable Today?

Tide range, wind and swell all feed the same call. Read them together the night before, and the answer is often just a different beach.

Everybody asks this the night before, and nobody answers it properly.

You check the tide app, then the weather app, then a buoy. You end up staring at numbers that don’t seem to talk to each other, feel vaguely uneasy about it, and go anyway.

That feels unsatisfying because you asked three questions when there’s really only one. Tide range, wind and swell all push on each other, and they all feed a single call: is there water I can actually fish today, and where is it?

A lot of nights the honest answer lands somewhere between go and stay home. It’s go somewhere else, and figuring that out the night before beats figuring it out at the ramp by a long way.

Rough bands, not laws — a 4-foot surf on a steep beach with a long period is a different animal from 4 feet of short wind chop, and a hard-running tide is a problem in an inlet and a gift in a marsh. Use the picture for the shape of the decision: the worst dial sets the ceiling, and the fix for a coral band is almost always geography rather than tackle.

DIAL ONE

Range: how hard the water will run.

Take the day’s high and subtract the low. That number decides whether the places you like are going to do their job.

Small range is the quietly disappointing one. Nothing’s wrong and it’s nice out, but the creek mouth never really drains, so nothing gets flushed out of the grass and nothing sets up to eat it. Small-range days are for structure that works without much flow, like a light at night or a deep hole with a little current left in it.

Big range is a better kind of problem. Funnels work, and the two hours either side of the change can get intense. It also means the inlet gets nasty, the flat you wanted drains out from under you faster than you expected, and the walk back across the bar has a shorter deadline than you think.

DIAL TWO

Wind: direction is the real number.

Speed decides whether you can cast. Direction decides whether there’s anything to cast at, and it gets ignored because it’s a compass point instead of a digit.

Onshore wind pushes surface water and everything drifting in it toward the beach. It stirs the trough, muddies the water a little, breaks up the light, and generally puts food where somebody standing on the sand can reach it. Up to a point that’s the best wind you can get. Past that point it turns into a wall of brown foam full of weed, and you can’t keep a bait where you put it.

Offshore wind does the reverse. It flattens the surface, cleans the water up, and can pull the warm surface layer and the bait out with it. The beach looks gorgeous and fishes like a parking lot more often than you’d hope, which is worth knowing before you drive two hours toward the prettiest forecast of the week.

Then there’s the tide. Wind against a hard-running tide steepens everything and stalls your drift, while wind going the same way smooths it out and runs your drift away from you. The wind speed didn’t change. The hour did.

DIAL THREE

Swell: the period is the number people skip

Buoy reports give you a height and a period, and almost everybody reads the height and skips the period. The period is the gap in seconds between waves, and it tells you how much energy is arriving.

A 3-foot swell at a 5-second period is local wind chop — sloppy, close together, no real punch. A 3-foot swell at 13 seconds is organized energy that traveled a long way, and it hits the beach like it means it. The app shows you the same number for both.

Long period also means the water works deeper. That’s what stirs the trough and redraws the bars overnight, and it’s why the beach you figured out last month can be a slightly different beach today.

What to check: the height, the period, and whether the swell direction actually reaches the stretch you want to fish. A south swell does nothing to a beach facing east.

Combinations worth knowing on sight

Moderate onshore wind, medium range, small clean swell

The one you want. Water’s moving, bait’s getting pushed in, the surface is broken enough to hide you, and you can still cast. If you get to pick a day, pick this one.

Hard offshore wind, big range

Gorgeous, flat, and often quiet. Go inside and fish structure with the current instead of spending the whole day trying to prove the open beach still works.

This is the combination that gets small boats in trouble, so it stops being a fishing decision. Fish inside, fish the other side of the change, or fish tomorrow.

High or hazardous surf

Don’t turn a hazardous surf forecast into a fishing plan by assuming the protected side is safe. Check the local NWS forecast and hazard statements, access restrictions, tide, current, and how exposed the backup water really is. Sometimes the right place to relocate to is home.

Everything mild, tiny range

The sneaky one, because nothing looks wrong. Nothing’s moving, either. Fish a light at night, fish deep, or call it a scouting day and go walk structure you’ve never seen.

Two days after heavy rain

Freshwater is stacked on top of the salt in every creek and river mouth, and the fish have dropped down or moved out to find their salinity again. Fish farther toward the ocean than you normally would.

THE HONEST BIT

Sometimes the answer is no, and that’s a real answer.

Catching fish has nothing to do with this part.

Big swell on a rock jetty is how people get swept off. It doesn’t take a storm. It takes one set bigger than the rest showing up while you’re facing the other way. If the swell is up, stay off the rocks. Not further back on the rocks. Off them.

A rising tide with a bar between you and the beach has a countdown on it. Know your turnaround time before you walk out, and head back early instead of right on time.

An inlet with wind against a hard ebb builds standing waves worse than anything on either side of it. Boats that handle open water fine get in trouble in that specific quarter mile.

It’s the same thinking as the rest of this page: look at what the water is actually doing, then decide. Getting this one wrong just costs a lot more than a fish.

The call only gets better if you write down what actually happened afterward. Two seasons of “said workable, was workable” is how a general set of bands turns into a read on your particular stretch of coast.
