Hook the Horizon

The Field Shop

Everything here is built to get used outside — opened on the bank, printed and cut apart, riding around in the box until the second something stops working. Nobody can sell you what your water’s doing today, so there are no lure lists or hotspots in here. What we sell is the hard part: figuring out what you’re looking at, and what to try next.

Start with the problem

What went wrong?

You don’t need to know yet whether the fix is a deck, a lab or a field course. Start with whatever’s making the next decision hard.

The water is new.

Too much map and no reason to cast here instead of a mile away. Cut unfamiliar water down to a few zones worth a real test.

Field Deck 03 — Water You Have Never Fished

Available now

The day changed.

The plan worked, then the wind, flow, light, temperature or water changed underneath it. Work out what moved before you change five things.

Field Deck 01 — What Changed

Available now

A fish came over and left.

A follow is not nothing. Keep the parts the fish already settled and test only what is still open.

Field Deck 02 — The Last Six Feet

Available now

I know this water. It stopped making sense.

The waypoint stayed put. The reason may not have. Compare what stayed, what moved and what has to be verified before an old spot earns another cast.

Retying is not diagnosing. Read the physical end of the break, bench-test the one thing it points at, and change the smallest thing that actually fixes it.

What a deck actually is, before you buy one. Two files, sent the moment you pay. The deck itself is a single self-contained web page — it opens in any browser, needs no app and no account, and keeps working with no signal once it’s loaded, which is the whole point. The second file is a Letter-size print set, laid out so the cards survive getting cut apart and carried in the box.

It’s yours to keep. No subscription, no expiry, no download limit, and updates are free, because you bought the deck, not one version of the file.

Bought it and it wasn’t what you needed? Tell us inside 14 days and you get your money back, no explanation needed. If a file won’t open or won’t print, there’s no clock on that at all — that one’s ours to fix. How refunds work.

What Changed

$12

Something worked. Then it stopped. Most fishing advice answers that by handing you a different lure, which is a guess wearing a price tag. This deck does the other thing — it tells you what a change actually did to the water, what it did not touch, and how to test one variable at a time so the result means something.

17 read cards

The river came up. They ran the dam. The wind swung. Turnover. The tide turned. What moves, where that puts fish, and how to confirm it standing there.

11 test cards

Depth, speed, pause, angle, profile. One variable each, and a result table that says what every outcome actually means.

1 stop card

Sometimes there is no card left that says try harder. Nothing else sold to anglers has a reason to tell you so.

Format

Works in any browser with no signal. Plus a 46-page print set laid out to be cut apart. Seven original diagrams.

What this does not change

Nothing in the deck reads a gauge or forecasts your water. You bring the event; the card tells you what that event does to water of its class. Public water only, no marks, no coordinates.

Deck 01 is ready. Twenty-nine cards, seven original diagrams and a 46-page print set laid out to be cut apart. It opens in any browser and keeps working once the signal stops. Buy it once — updates are free, because you are buying the deck rather than one version of the file.

The Last Six Feet

$12

It came all the way in, looked at it, and left. The standard answer to that is an ordered list of five things to change, with no way of telling which one is live — so people change all five and learn nothing they can repeat. This deck starts somewhere else: a follow is evidence, and it has already settled half the question.

11 follow cards

Turned at your feet. Hung back. Veered off inside the final foot. Swiped and missed. Nudged it. Stopped following the moment you changed something. Different refusals, different information.

10 test cards

One variable each — the pause at the follow, the cast angle, time in the zone, one size down, the turn, the connection. Every one ends in a result table, including the outcomes where nothing happens.

6 species cards

The species changes the answer more than the tackle does. Pike and musky, bass, trout in current, clear stillwater, inshore, panfish.

Format

Works in any browser with no signal. Plus a 52-page print set laid out to be cut apart. Eight original diagrams.

Settled, and still live

Every follow card ends with a ledger: what your fish has already proved — so you stop spending casts there — and what is genuinely still open. That split is the whole deck.

Try it before you buy it. The Refusal Reader is free and reads one observation the same way the deck does. If it is useful, the deck carries all eleven signatures, every result table and the print set.

Water You Have Never Fished

$12

Water in every direction, all of it looking about the same, no reason to cast here rather than a mile that way. You know how to fish; nothing out there has told you where. That is a search problem, and search problems shrink — nine cards run in order, each one removing part of the map.

9 cards, in sequence

What kind of water this is. Which way it is moving. Where the edges are. Delivery next to relief. Light and fetch. Something alive. Where two good things meet. Three zones. What the first hour is actually for.

7 water classes

A freestone, a tailwater, a natural lake, a reservoir, a pond, a beach and an estuary are different problems wearing the same word. What draws the map in each, and three places to start.

9 edges

Everybody can name a seam. Far fewer can say what changes across one — which is what decides whether it is worth twenty casts.

Format

Works in any browser with no signal. Plus a 45-page print set. Seven original diagrams.

What this cannot tell you

Every one of the 26 cards ends with that line. No marks, no coordinates, no spots — a deck that only told you what it knew would be selling certainty it does not have.

On buying more than one

There’s no bundle, on purpose

The decks cross-reference each other, so a second one is worth more than the first — but every deck is $12 on its own, and there’s no discounted set, collection or pass. A clever bundle price is a lousy reason to buy a deck you were never going to open. Buy the one that matches what went wrong last time out; the shelf is still here in March.

Current and next

The working instruments

A deck is for the bank, cut apart and riding in the box. These are the other kind: things you sit down with, fill in, and open again next season. Each one keeps its own working record on your device, exports to JSON so you can move it yourself, and prints. Six are finished and on sale. One’s still being built, and it says so instead of taking your money early. Deck 04 sits in here too, since it keeps a Return Record the same way.

First 10 Trips — The Field Course

Every trip feels like starting over. Ten sessions, one job each, and an explicit list of what you are deliberately not learning yet. Gear comes after the diagnosis. We may use affiliate links, but only after a real gap in your gear survives the water read, the setup check and the cheaper fix. Tackle Link should be able to explain the gap before a product link shows up, and the recommendation has to stay useful if the link disappears.

The free side stays free. We don’t paywall basic fishing education. The situation pages, the species library, the water-reading work and all seven field instruments stay open. If you can learn it from an article, you shouldn’t have to buy it.

What you pay for is the whole kit, built to work outside — every card, the diagrams, the print layout, the result tables, and an offline copy in your pocket. That’s a different thing from an article, and it’s priced like one.
