Water in every direction, all of it looking about the same, and no reason to cast here rather than a mile that way. 26 cards that cut an unfamiliar water down until the first cast has a reason to exist. Two files: the deck as a single self-contained web page that opens in any browser and works with no signal, plus a 45-page Letter-size print set laid out to be cut apart.Your purchase includes: the files listed above, unlimited re-downloads, and free corrections and updates. Description

What you get

Two files, the moment you pay.

The deck (.html) — one self-contained file that opens in any browser. No app, no account, no sign-in, and it keeps working with no signal once it has loaded. Search it, filter it by water class, or run the nine-card cut straight through.

The print set (.pdf) — 45 pages, Letter size, laid out so the cards survive being cut apart. The nine cards of the cut fit in one hand on the walk in.

Yours to keep. No subscription, no expiry on the download links, and no limit on how many times you download them. Updates are free — you are buying the deck, not one version of the file.

Standing in front of unfamiliar water is its own kind of stuck

You know how to fish. Nothing out there has told you where. That is a search problem, and search problems shrink.

The category’s answer to this is a list of spots, which solves it once, for one water, for whoever else has the same list. This deck does the other thing: nine cards run in order, each one removing part of the map, until what is left is two or three zones that deserve a real test.

What is in it

9 cards, in sequence — the cut. What kind of water this is. Which direction it is moving. Where the edges are. Delivery next to relief. Light, wind and fetch. Something alive. Where two good things meet. Three zones, then stop picking. And what the first hour is actually for. Each one carries a bar showing how much of the water is still in play after it — the funnel made visible.

7 water classes. A freestone river, a tailwater, a natural lake, a reservoir, a pond, a beach and an estuary are different problems wearing the same word. Each card says what draws the map in that class and gives you three places to start.

9 edges, read rather than named. Everybody can point at a seam. Far fewer can say what changes across one — which is the part that decides whether it is worth twenty casts. The seam, the depth break, the weed edge, the inflow, the clarity boundary, the shade line, the bottom transition, the point, and what to write in the notebook so a day compounds instead of evaporating.

1 stop card. Good water you cannot safely fish is not good water.

What it refuses to do

No marks. No coordinates. No spots. Every single card ends with a line saying what it cannot tell you, because a deck that only told you what it knew would be selling certainty it does not have — and because a relationship transfers to any water while a waypoint transfers nowhere and turns somebody’s fragile stretch into public property.

How it works outside

Seven original diagrams drawn for a phone screen in bright light. It opens in any browser and keeps working when the signal stops. There is also a 45-page print set: the nine cards of the cut fit in one hand on the walk in.

Your purchase includes

The browser deck and print set described above are yours to keep, use on your own devices, print for your own use and carry offline. Revisions to this deck are included at no additional cost.
