WATER-TYPE FRAMES
The furniture changes. Most of the questions don’t.
A farm pond doesn’t sort fish the way a smallmouth river does, and neither one looks much like a jetty, a reservoir basin or a northern lake big enough to have its own forecast. Pick the frame that looks like the water in front of you, find the one thing a fish could actually use there, then take it to Species & Presentation and turn it into a cast you can test.

WHAT A FRAME DOES
It shrinks the problem without pretending it knows your spot.
Each frame asks what’s actually shaping the water: wind and fetch, current, depth, cover, inflow, tide, temperature, oxygen, clarity, bottom, how exposed the shoreline is, open-water structure. What it won’t do is promise that every fish is on the windy bank, that every river fish slides shallow when the water comes up, or that every lake in July has a thermocline worth fishing. The water never signed off on any of those.
Think of a frame as the words for what you’re looking at. The species side decides which of those things matter to the fish you’re after, and the presentation side is how you test the idea without changing six things at once.
Stillwater pond & lake
Organizing forces: cover, depth transitions, vegetation, inflow, wind exposure, clarity, temperature and oxygen. A bank taking wind is worth comparing, but the wind tells you something about the bank, not where the fish are.
Flowing river & stream
Organizing forces: velocity, refuge, depth, cover, seams, tributaries and changing discharge. Look for feeding access beside water the species can afford to hold in.
Coastal & inshore
Organizing forces: tidal current, water level, surf structure, inlet flow, wind, swell, salinity and freshwater influence. Tide height and tidal current are related, and treating them as one number is how you show up right after the water quit moving.
Reservoir
Organizing forces: old channels, creek arms, inflows, points, flats, basin depth, water-level change and seasonal thermal structure. A creek arm can be having a completely different day than the main basin.
Great Lakes-style water
Organizing forces: long fetch, large-basin depth, tributary plumes, temperature/oxygen habitat, seiches, harbors and open-water forage. The water that’s safe to be on can change as fast as the water that’s worth fishing.

Finding the water is step one of four
1 · Water
Name something you could defend out loud: a current seam next to a place to rest, a weed edge on a depth change, tidal current wrapping around structure, a tributary plume, a layer where temperature and oxygen both work, or anything else a fish could really use.
2 · Species
Does the fish you’re after have a reason to be using that right now? Season, temperature, oxygen, spawning, forage and movement can each make your water guess stronger or knock it down.
3 · Presentation
Pick a depth, speed, angle, path and profile that can actually get through the water you think they’re holding in. If you can’t tell where the lure is, sort that out before you read anything into what the fish did.
4 · Response
Nothing at all, a follow, a refusal, a bump, a hookup and a fish you lost are six different answers, not one. Change one thing that matters, watch what happens next, and take it into the debrief.
