The weather app on your phone can call it a nice morning while the marine forecast for the same stretch of coast describes a pretty different one. The app isn’t lying. It just isn’t looking at the water. Marine products add wind, seas, wave period, swell and marine hazards that matter out there and don’t show up in a land forecast at all.

Wave height and wind speed are not the whole number
Fifteen knots and three-foot seas sounds like a complete picture. It isn’t. What’s missing is wave period — the time between one crest and the next.
At the same height, shorter-period waves are generally steeper and packed closer together, which can make for a much rougher ride. Longer-period swell is spaced out more but can still be dangerous, especially near shoals, inlets, bars or against an opposing current. Height and period only mean something read together, and read against your boat, your route, the current and the wind.
A small craft advisory is a threshold, not a mood
A Small Craft Advisory is a National Weather Service hazard product. It goes out when sustained wind or sea conditions reach a level the local forecast office treats as hazardous for smaller boats, and the exact criteria vary from office to office. It is not a certificate that a particular boat is safe below the line or unsafe above it. NWS even notes there’s no precise definition of a “small craft,” so the boat’s size and seaworthiness, the operator’s experience, the route and the actual conditions all still matter.
Direction matters as much as speed
A following sea pushes from behind. A head sea punches into the bow, and a beam sea hits you broadside.
The same reported wind and wave height can feel completely different depending on which of those you’re in, and how much it matters also depends on the boat’s design, your speed, the current and who’s driving. Figure direction for the run out and the run back, because one wind-speed number isn’t the whole sea state.
Significant wave height is not the maximum wave
This one catches a lot of people. National Weather Service marine products commonly use significant wave height, which is the average height of the highest one-third of the waves. It’s not the average of all of them, and it’s definitely not a ceiling. Individual waves can be a lot bigger; NWS notes that a 10-foot significant wave height can include occasional waves near 19 feet under the standard statistical model.
Nineteen is not a rounding error on ten. Leave yourself real margin for those bigger individual waves, plus whatever the period, wind direction and current do, and for what your specific boat can take.
It can turn faster than the forecast window
A forecast is still a prediction. Conditions offshore can build faster than the model expected, especially with a fast-moving system or some local effect near land.
Check an updated forecast right before you leave the dock, not the one you read the night before, and keep checking through the day. The morning forecast doesn’t hold until dark just because that would be convenient.
The trip home needs its own check
A calm departure can hide a nasty return if wind, sea state, visibility or current is forecast to get worse later. Look at the forecast for the whole window you expect to be out, including the heading you’ll be running home on, not just the moment you push off.
Use your own forecast, not this page
Whether a boat leaves the dock has never been my call to make, so everything here leans on National Weather Service marine guidance instead of a story from me. Use the current NWS marine forecast for your area, and match the go/no-go call to what your specific boat can actually handle, not to a rule of thumb. Confirm the required safety equipment with the U.S. Coast Guard and your state boating agency, and leave a float plan with somebody ashore before you go.
Calling off a trip you’ve been counting down to all week feels lousy, and it feels worse when other boats head out anyway. That doesn’t make it the timid call.
