Any hand method is fair game as long as it builds the same locked weave and finish. Learn the structure first and the finger choreography sorts itself out.
WHY THE PROFILE STAYS THIN
The leader stays mostly straight.
Most leader knots build bulk by folding or looping the thicker leader. The FG does the opposite: alternating braid wraps bite around the outside of a straight leader. Once those wraps lock, you trim the leader tag close and step the braid finish down toward the main line.
The catch is that the braid has to bite hard before the finishing hitches are asked to hold anything. A loose weave with beautiful half hitches is still a loose FG, and it won’t tell you that until the knot is loaded and it’s too late to fix on the water.
A method-neutral way to understand the FG
- Hold the leader under firm tension. It should stay dead straight while you work the braid around it.
- Alternate the braid around opposite sides of the leader so every new wrap crosses and grips it. Build a consistent woven section.
- Keep tension on both braid and leader as the weave grows. If the wraps go slack, reset before you go any further.
- Pull the main braid and leader hard in opposite directions. This is the moment the braid should visibly bite and stop sliding.
- Pinch the end of the weave and lock the braid around both leader and braid with firm half hitches.
- Only once the grip is proven, trim the leader tag, then add a few braid-only hitches for a smoother step-down.
- Pull-test it again before you fish it.
FG vs. the easier field knots
Alberto
More forgiving to tie in a lot of field situations. A touch bulkier, because the leader gets folded into a loop.
Double Uni
Simple, easy to inspect, easy to relearn. Noticeably bulkier when the knot has to cross guides over and over.
Albright
A strong unequal-material connection built around a folded heavy-line loop. It’s the pick when the material relationship suits that structure.

THE SIX-MOVE CHECK
Job → Material → Route → Dress → Seat → Test
- Job. Name what the connection has to do before choosing the knot.
- Material. Confirm the line, leader, rope, wire, and hardware actually suit this structure.
- Route. Trace every pass before tightening anything.
- Dress. Put strands, wraps, and loops in their intended order with no accidental crossings.
- Seat. Tighten in the order this knot needs. More force does not repair bad geometry.
- Test. Inspect the finished shape, load it by hand when appropriate, and retie if anything moves or fails the article-specific checks.
Practice / pass test. Tie this knot three clean times without rushing. A tie passes only when it matches this article’s What to check before you trust it geometry, shows none of the listed failure clues, and survives the stated load/inspection test. If you cannot tell why one attempt is better than another, keep practicing—the lesson is recognition, not memorization.

FG Knot — the short answers
- ALSO CALLED
- FG. The initials are explained several ways and the origin is genuinely disputed, so treat any single story about the name with caution. Same name everywhere. Standard among Japanese offshore casters, GT and tuna anglers, and inshore braid fishermen.
- KNOT TYPE
- Line-to-line knot — braid woven onto a straight leader, then locked with half hitches
- WHAT IT CONNECTS
- Braid main line to a mono or fluorocarbon leader. Not a terminal knot, not for hardware, and not for joining two lines of similar diameter and stiffness.
- LINE TYPES
- Braid to mono or fluorocarbon leader, and it needs that difference in stiffness to work. Braid to braid it slips. Very slick, round, small-diameter braids bite worst; soft or heavily coated leader lets the weave walk under load.
- STRENGTH BAND
- High. Most published work puts it near the top of the braid-to-leader group, but those tests disagree with each other by wide margins, and a loose FG sits well below an average Double Uni. Technique dominates the number.
- DIFFICULTY
- Advanced. The hardest knot in common use to learn on the water, and most people tie a run of bad ones first. A child can learn the weave at a table with the leader anchored; almost nobody learns it on a moving deck.
- STEPS AND WRAPS
- About seven moves. The weave is counted in crossing pairs, commonly fifteen to twenty, then two or three locking hitches over leader and braid together, then two or three braid-only hitches to step the finish down.
- TIE TIME
- A home knot for most anglers, a boat knot for the practiced. Two to four minutes while learning, under a minute once the tension habit is built. Nobody ties a good first FG in a bite window.
- POOR CONDITIONS
- The weakest performer in this group when conditions turn. Cold hands, gloves, wind and a rolling deck all attack the tension you have to hold, and in low light you cannot see whether the weave is biting. Many anglers tie leaders at the dock.
- THROUGH THE GUIDES
- The slimmest braid-to-leader connection in common use, and the whole reason to bother with it. It runs through the guides on the cast with barely a tick, so you can wind a long leader inside the tip and still cast freely.
- LUBRICATION
- Wet the weave before the final hard seat. Braid cinching down dry on fluorocarbon builds heat exactly where the wraps bite, and it is the leader, not the braid, that takes that damage.
- TAG END
- Trim the leader tag close only after the lock hitches have proven grip, never before. Leave the braid tag around a quarter inch past the last hitch; braid creeps, and a flush braid tag can withdraw into the finish.
- TOOLS
- None required. Nippers to trim, and that is the whole kit. Some anglers use a small tension tool, a hook set in a knee, or a rod tip to hold the leader straight while they weave. Never burn a braid tag.
- BEST SUITED TO
- Anything cast on braid behind a leader: GT, tuna, kingfish, snook, striped bass, snapper, flats and surf work. It is the default wherever a long leader has to sit inside the guides between casts.
The strength bands are rough on purpose. Published knot tests don’t agree with each other — the same braid-to-leader knot has tested near ninety percent of line strength on one machine and under half on another, because the line brand, its diameter, how fast it got cinched, whether it was wet and whose hands tied it all move the number more than the knot does. Use the band to compare this knot with the others, not as a number to quote.
FIELD INTELLIGENCE
Where it earns its place, and where it costs you
Advantages
- The thinnest profile of any common braid-to-leader knot, so long leaders can be wound inside the rod tip and still cast.
- Very high holding strength when the weave bites, because the leader is never folded or bent back on itself.
- The finished knot is tapered, so it sheds weed and does not slap the guides on the cast.
- It preserves leader strength better than knots that build a tight loop in heavy fluorocarbon.
- Once learned, it is fast enough to retie between drifts.
Disadvantages
- Hardest of this group to learn, and the failure mode while learning is a knot that looks correct and slips under load.
- Depends entirely on tension held during the weave, which is the first thing lost with cold hands or in a swell.
- Needs a real diameter and stiffness gap between braid and leader; it is unreliable on light leader or thick, soft braid.
- Hard to inspect after a fish — a weave that has crept a fraction looks much like one that has not.
- Slow to tie in the dark, which is when leaders most often need replacing.
Use a different knot when
- Alberto Knot — when you want most of the slimness with far less tension discipline, especially in rough water. The four braid-to-leader knots side by side is where I argue that out properly.
- Double Uni — when you need a connection you can tie, inspect and relearn under any conditions
- Albright Knot — when the leader is heavy enough that a folded loop of the heavy line is the natural structure
- Slim Beauty — when the leader is stiff heavy fluorocarbon and you want a fast, compact knot without the FG learning curve
WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU TRUST IT
The FG earns its place on rods where the leader lives inside the guides — long-leader casting for GT, tuna, stripers and snook, where a bulky knot means a hung cast every time. The useful check isn’t wrap count but the moment of bite: pull braid against leader hard, before trimming anything, and watch for the weave to stop sliding and stay stopped. If it creeps, cut it off instead of piling on hitches. It’s the slimmest connection available and the least forgiving of a bad day, and a poorly tied FG is weaker than a well-tied Double Uni.
What actually makes it fail
- Slack in the early wraps, so the weave never bites and walks off the leader under the first heavy load.
- Locking hitches tied before the weave has proven grip, which hides the slip instead of fixing it.
- Leader too light or too soft for the braid, so the wraps bed into the leader and cut it rather than gripping it.
- The leader tag trimmed flush and hot, leaving a burr or a stub that saws at the braid finish.
- Braid tag trimmed too short, letting the final hitches unwind over a session of casting.
How to test it, and how it ages
Before you trim anything, hold the braid and the leader and pull them steadily apart with real force. A good FG stops dead and the weave does not travel a fraction along the leader; a bad one creeps quietly, and creeping is the only warning you get. Then look at it: the wraps should sit evenly and tightly with no gaps, the lock hitches snug against the end of the weave, and the whole thing tapered rather than lumpy. Finish with a steady pull against a bent rod, never a snatch.
Over a session: Very stable once it has bitten — it is often the last thing on the rig still in good shape at the end of a day. Check it after any big fish or contact with structure, because braid polishes and flattens where the weave grips.
Troubleshooting
Why does it slip the moment I load it?
Tension, almost always. The early wraps were loose and the hitches only hid it. Start again and get the braid biting before you build any length of weave.
Do more wraps make it stronger?
No. Past a solid, evenly tensioned weave, extra wraps add bulk and nothing else. Anglers add wraps to fix a tension problem and it never works.
Why does my leader break right at the knot?
The leader is too light or too soft for the braid, or the weave is cutting into it rather than gripping. Step up leader diameter or switch to a knot that folds the leader, like the Alberto.
Why does it catch on my guides after a while?
The braid tag or the lock hitches have loosened and lifted. Retie it. Do not try to trim a lifted finish smooth on the water.
Does it matter which hand method I use?
No. Any method that builds a tight alternating weave, locks it, and steps the finish down produces the same knot. Copy whichever routine your hands can hold tension through.
