Description
The note about the gate was true when you wrote it. The gate has been locked for four years. Nothing about the page has changed — same handwriting, same confident tone, same position halfway down a page you trust — so you drive out, park where you always park, and find out at six in the morning in the rain.
Field books do not go wrong because anglers write down the wrong things. They go wrong because everything in them keeps looking equally true while the water underneath it moves on.
Every entry carries three things beyond what it says
Where it came from, when you last confirmed it, and which chapter it is in — because the last one decides how fast it goes off. The way in changes faster than the season does. A negative result you trust ages more slowly than anything else you will ever write down. Twelve months is nothing to a chapter about what happens in April and a long time to a chapter about a track across a field.
Six standings
- Holding — yours, and recent enough for its chapter.
- Aging — it was yours and it was true, and you have not checked in a while. This is the state the instrument exists to surface, because it is invisible in every other field book ever kept.
- Lapsed — far enough past its interval that you should find out again before acting on it.
- Hearsay — never yours and never tested. It can sit in the book; it never holds.
- Superseded — kept rather than deleted. What the water used to do is part of what the water does.
- Undated — you cannot decay what you never dated.
The book then prints a re-establish list at the front, worst overdue first. That list is the only part of a field book worth reading before a trip.
Ten chapters, ten clocks
The way in and the hazards run on twelve months. Where they hold, eighteen. Conditions, what has earned its place and your rigs, twenty-four. The year here, thirty-six. What has not worked — the slowest-aging chapter and the one almost nobody keeps — sixty. Open questions and the handover do not decay at all.
How it is sold
There is no per-trip charge, no export limit, no credit, no account and nothing that counts what you do. You buy the book once and print it as often as you like for as long as you own it, which is the only honest way to sell a thing whose entire job is to be reprinted when it changes.
It also reads the JSON any other Hook instrument exports and turns it into a dated, sourced entry. That is an accelerant and never a requirement: nothing is locked behind owning anything else, and it works perfectly having imported nothing at all.

Poor fit
It is not a catch log and it will not hold your fish. It also arrives completely empty and stays that way until you write in it — there is nothing here about any water, and there never will be, because the entire value of a field book is that it is yours.
Your purchase includes the browser edition and the print edition, and any corrected release of this edition at no further cost.
You may read and print this on your own devices as often as you like, for as long as you own it, with no limit of any kind. Use its methods and working pages in your own work, and — if you work with clients or guide — use it while serving them and hand a client a completed book you produced with it.
You may not redistribute the publication itself, the blank working masters or the print file; resell or republish it; put the complete work in a shared library or community drive; or share your purchase credential in place of a purchase. It may not be used for model-training ingestion.
Refunds: fourteen days, no reason required. A broken, missing or materially misdescribed file is corrected or refunded without relying on that cutoff.
The intervals are stated conventions about how quickly kinds of knowledge go off, not measurements of your water. A current entry can still be wrong and an aging one can still be right.
