BLUE CATFISH · SPECIES PROFILE
There are two of these and they are both called blue catfish.
In the Mississippi, Missouri and Ohio systems a blue catfish is a big, long-lived native predator, managed like any other sport fish. In the Chesapeake watershed it’s a designated invasive, and the agency guidance written there is meant to get fish out of the river, not to help you enjoy catching them. Those two piles of sources don’t agree, and they were never trying to. Which one applies to you depends on which water you’re standing in.

THE FIN
One straight edge, and in some rivers it is not a trivia question.
The anal fin is the check — long, with a straight lower margin, where a channel cat carries a shorter rounded one. Size doesn’t settle it, and color settles it least of all, especially on a young fish. It matters more on this fish than most, because in some watersheds the two species sit under completely different rules about what you are allowed to put back.
The AFS review describes that fin as straight and tapered like a barber’s comb, which is the single most useful sentence anyone has written about identifying this fish. Thirty to thirty-five rays here; twenty-four to twenty-nine on a channel catfish. The ranges do not overlap.
You will see thirty to thirty-six quoted all over the place, and it took me a while to work out where the thirty-six came from, because no single agency source gives it. Rio Grande drainage populations reportedly run thirty-five to thirty-six. So the commonly repeated figure is the union of the normal range and a regional variant, welded together by repetition. It does not change anything — the gap to the channel cat holds either way — but I like knowing why a number exists.
A blue catfish never has dark spots. That sounds like a clean rule and it is only half of one, because a large channel catfish loses its spots too, so a bare flank proves nothing on its own. Profile is a better secondary check: the back on a blue rises steeply and straight into a wedge-shaped head, prominently humped in Florida’s phrasing, where a channel cat curves gently.
What I could not find anywhere was a blue-versus-flathead key. Not one agency page consulted set out the separating traits, and rather than invent some, I am telling you the gap is there. The jaw will do it in practice — a flathead’s lower jaw sticks out past the upper — but that is me reading across pages, not a source.

THE NATIVE ONE
In the Mississippi it is just an enormous fish minding its own business.
Start here, because this is the version that has been going on for as long as there have been rivers to do it in. Blue catfish are demersal — bottom-oriented — and they want deep channels with swift current and a silt-free floor of sand or gravel, with submerged treetops to congregate around. They hold the bottom in deep water through the day and move into faster water at night to feed. Because the feeding is chemical and tactile rather than visual, darkness costs them nothing.
The thing I did not expect is how far they travel. This is the most migratory of the catfishes: upstream in spring, downstream in autumn, with Mississippi basin movements measured in hundreds of kilometers. One tagging study had forty percent of tagged fish move more than sixteen kilometers, and the movement had nothing to do with how big the fish was. Chesapeake telemetry has tracked individuals over a hundred kilometers from release, including one that went up the James through the fishway at Bosher’s Dam. A catfish used a fish ladder. I think about that a lot.
They spawn between seventy and seventy-five degrees, April into June across most of the range and as late as early July in Iowa. They are cavity nesters — behind rocks, in root wads, in depressions and under cut banks, in water with almost no current in it — and both parents stay with the eggs and then the young, which South Carolina notes is unusual among catfish. Eggs hatch in seven or eight days at spawning temperature.
Maturity comes at four or five years in the south and six or seven in the north, and then they just keep going. FishBase caps the species at twenty-one years; Virginia and NOAA describe an average of nine or ten with individuals to twenty-five. The distinction is not worth arguing about, because either figure says the same thing about a trophy: a fish that size has been in that river a long, long time.
And the ceiling is high. Maximum recorded length is a hundred and sixty-five centimeters, about five foot five. The world record now is a hundred and forty-three pounds, out of Buggs Island Lake (Kerr Reservoir) on the Virginia line in June 2011, and IGFA lists it as the all-tackle record. The older mark you’ll still see quoted, a hundred and eleven pounds out of Wheeler Reservoir in Alabama in 1996, was the world record back then. Everywhere else, typical adults run twenty to forty-five inches and three to forty pounds, and Alabama notes most of the ones caught are under ten.

THE OTHER ONE
About twenty million of them in a single Virginia river.
Virginia stocked blue catfish into the James and the Rappahannock in 1974, with further releases into the York system by 1985. The intention was a sport fishery. USGS now records nonindigenous occurrences across thirty-one states.
Then the numbers get strange. A 2013 mark-recapture study by VIMS put the density in a twelve-kilometer stretch of the James at five hundred and forty-four fish per hectare, and extrapolating across the tidal river gave roughly twenty million blue catfish. Two years later the Rappahannock came in at eleven hundred and twenty-seven per hectare and the Pamunkey at five hundred and sixty-five.
Those figures are hard to feel until you put something familiar next to them. The Rappahannock held about a hundred and forty-five thousand adult striped bass in 2016. That is the fish everyone on that river is there for, and it is outnumbered by a margin that is not close.
The consumption follows. Modeling of large blue catfish in Burwell Bay, on the lower James, estimated they ate around a million juvenile Atlantic menhaden and six hundred thousand blue crabs in April and May of 2012 alone — two months. The diet work is broader than that, taking in alosines, eels, bay anchovy, and a fair amount of vegetation, but the spring window is where the pressure concentrates, because that is when everything small is moving.
A geospatial model projects expansion from a hundred and thirty-six Chesapeake watersheds to two hundred and forty-two. In Mexico they hybridize with the Yaqui catfish, which is a threatened species, and that is a quieter problem than the menhaden but a harder one to undo.
The Invasive Catfish Task Force is blunt about where this ends up: “once a species has become widely dispersed in an open aquatic system like Chesapeake Bay eradication is rarely feasible or cost-effective.” They are not planning to win. They are planning to live with it.

THE PART NOBODY EXPECTED
The invasion is quietly taking away its own trophies.
This part sounds backwards. The fish that was stocked to make a trophy fishery has become so numerous that it’s making trophies rarer.
Size structure in the James is now heavily bottom-weighted: about forty-six percent of the fish under thirty-one centimeters fork length, another forty-seven percent between thirty-one and sixty-one, and only around seven percent above sixty-one. That is a lot of small fish competing for the same food, and the consequence shows up in the measurement that matters — mean weight at a given length is now lower than it was historically. The fish are thinner for their size than they used to be.
That is density doing exactly what density does. Growth slows, the big ones get scarcer, and the fishery that was the entire point of the introduction gets worse as a direct result of the introduction succeeding. It is a genuinely useful thing to understand about fish populations in general, and blue catfish just happen to be demonstrating it at a scale you can see from a boat.

EIGHT TO THIRTEEN INCHES
Somewhere in there it stops being one animal and starts being another.
The single most important dietary fact about this species is the switch. Under roughly eight to thirteen inches a blue catfish is eating invertebrates. Past it, it is eating fish, and the growth rate changes noticeably once that happens. The exact point varies river to river, which is itself a hint that it is about what is available rather than about the calendar.
Stomach contents from the lower Mississippi put the adult diet at about forty-seven percent fish, fifteen percent mollusks, twelve percent midge larvae and worms, and seven percent detritus and plant matter. Trophic level sits at 3.4. It is a predator, but a loose and opportunistic one, and the Virginia Tech work — more than sixteen thousand stomachs examined in the Chesapeake — found a large portion of the spring, summer and fall diet was vegetation.
That same study produced a comparison worth holding onto, because it cuts against the story people tell. River herring turned up in four percent of blue catfish stomachs and seventeen percent of flathead catfish stomachs. The blue cat is the one everybody talks about, and on that particular prey species the flathead is doing more of the damage.
And they eat each other. Cannibalism is documented, which given the density figures above is less surprising than it sounds and probably part of what keeps the whole thing from getting worse.

HOW PEOPLE ACTUALLY CATCH THEM
Cut bait on the bottom, and none of the agencies say otherwise.
Keep one thing in view while you read this. Some of the guidance below exists to help you catch blue catfish, and some of it exists to help an agency get blue catfish out of a river. Those two purposes produce very similar advice and completely different intentions.
Not one agency source I consulted recommends an artificial lure for this fish. The recurring answer is fresh cut fish, with shrimp, chicken liver and prepared stink baits behind it. Virginia’s rig is a Carolina rig fished on the bottom with three-quarters of an ounce to an ounce and a half, which is enough to hold in current and not much more.
What is missing from the record is hook guidance. No agency source specifies a hook style or size, circle hooks included, which surprised me for a fish this heavily studied. Florida lists bush hooks and trotlines as methods in use, and whether either is legal depends entirely on where you are.
One method you will read about and cannot use: low-frequency electrofishing, running as a removal fishery on the James and the Pamunkey since 2014. It is in here as context for why the literature reads the way it does, not as technique.

THIRTY-TWO INCHES
Two agencies, two unrelated questions, one identical number.
On the tidal James below the fall line, Virginia sets no daily limit on blue catfish at all, with one exception: you may keep one fish per day longer than thirty-two inches.
Separately, and for entirely different reasons, the Virginia Department of Health draws its line on that same stretch of river at thirty-two inches. Below it, limited eating. At or above it, do not eat — PCBs.
Two agencies, one worried about the fishery and one worried about what is in the fish, arriving independently at the same figure. I noticed it while cross-checking something else and it stopped me for a minute. The trophy provision and the health threshold are the same line, and that alignment is doing a lot of quiet work.
Two related facts worth carrying. Removing the dark lateral-line meat cuts PCBs in what is left by up to eighty percent, which is the single highest-leverage thing anyone has measured about cleaning one of these. And contamination runs higher in the upper tributary reaches than the lower ones, so where you caught it matters more than people assume.
Maryland, meanwhile, imposes no creel limit, no size limit and no season on blue catfish whatsoever. Which tells you how the two states are thinking about the same fish, and it also explains the commercial story: landings went from just under two hundred and three thousand pounds in 2007 to over four million in 2016, and by 2018 Maryland was supplying blue catfish to state institutions. There is a real bottleneck on how fast that can grow, and it turns out to be USDA inspection requirements from the 2014 Farm Bill, which is a strange place for a catfish story to finish.

WHERE THE SOURCES ARGUE
Almost every contradiction here turns out to be the same contradiction.
Most of the conflict here traces back to the native-versus-invasive split. A figure gathered on a managed native population and a figure gathered on an expanding introduced one can both be accurate and are not about the same fish. Where the sources disagree on growth, density or diet, find out which watershed the number came from before deciding one of them is wrong.
Maximum weight is the easiest one to resolve. FishBase gives sixty-eight kilograms, USGS gives forty to fifty, and the current rod-and-line world record, that 143-pound Virginia fish, is right about sixty-five. That is mostly a matter of vintage — the lower reference numbers predate the Chesapeake and Kerr Reservoir giants that later record-keepers were weighing.
Fecundity I cannot resolve at all. The AFS review gives nine hundred to thirteen hundred and fifty eggs per kilogram of female; the Chesapeake Bay Program field guide gives four to eight thousand. Same units, three to nine times apart, and no source reconciles them. I am not averaging those. An average of two numbers that far apart is a made-up number with a decimal point on it.
Salinity has three figures in circulation — eleven parts per thousand, fourteen or higher, up to fifteen — plus a laboratory figure of 15.7 that gets quoted alongside them and shouldn’t be, because it is a seventy-two-hour mortality threshold rather than a tolerance limit. Those are different kinds of measurement. And the same symposium notes that tolerance increases with body size, so a single species-level number was never going to work anyway.
Water clarity is the one I enjoy, because the sources are flatly opposed. FishBase has them in clear, strongly flowing water; the AFS review has them preferring turbidity. My guess is that it is definitional — what counts as clear in the Mississippi is not what counts as clear in an Ozark stream — but no source says so, so that’s a guess and I’m labeling it as one.
The last gap is the one that bothers me most, because it sits right where the decisions are. Nothing in the record describes how to release a blue catfish well — no warmwater release guidance, no spawning-season handling, nothing. For a fish where what happens on the bank is the interesting question, that is a strange hole to find.
