A sloppy Bimini and a good one can look identical sitting on the deck. You only find out which one you tied when something big leans on it. The whole knot is a long column of twists with the tag rolled back down over them and locked with half-hitches, so no single hard bend carries the load — but that only works if the reverse wrap actually bites into twists you kept tight, instead of lying on top of loose ones. It’s the double line for a fish that’s trying to break you off, and it asks for a minute of steady hands in return.

Where I start counting
The classic teaching method starts around 20 twists before the reverse wrap. Light mono usually wants more and stiff heavy line fewer, so treat it as a starting point, not a rule.
What it’s actually best for
Not the fastest double line you can tie — the Spider Hitch beats it there. What the Bimini does better than anything else in my box is spread load across the whole twisted column instead of one knot, which is the only reason I trust it on fish that can actually break line.
Critical variable
Tension. A loose Bimini can look finished from the outside and still have nothing holding the reverse wrap down. Your eyes won’t catch that one. Your hands, pulling on both legs, will.
The twists get buried, not tightened
Once the line is twisted, spread the loop legs under tension. That forces the tag to roll back over the original twists and bury them under a tight reverse spiral. Half-hitches then lock the rolled section so it can’t unwind. Twist count gets most of the attention in the arguments about this knot, and it matters less than the arguing suggests. What actually decides whether the wrap grips anything is the tension you hold from the first twist to the last hitch. Let it sag for even a second in the middle and the whole column gets soft.
The twist column has to stay loaded the whole time
- Form the large double-line loop you want and leave yourself a long tag.
- Twist the two loop legs around each other roughly twenty times in the classic method.
- Hold firm tension and spread the two loop legs apart so the twist column compresses.
- Control the tag as it rolls back down over the original twists in a tight reverse spiral.
- Lock the reverse wrap with successive half-hitches, around one leg and then both legs, as your method specifies.
- Set the finish, inspect every wrap, and load both legs evenly.
Failure clue
Tension dropped somewhere in the twist column — that’s the one I look for first, because it’s the easiest to miss while you’re mid-tie. The tag jumped out of line during the reverse wrap and left a gap, which usually means the hand holding tension got tired before the hand doing the wrapping did. The finishing hitches slipped. Or one loop leg ended up carrying more of the load than the other, so the doubled section was never really doubled — you’ll feel that one later as a knot that tests weaker than it should, and by then you’re guessing at which step went wrong instead of watching it happen.
When the double line has to be right
Use: a strong doubled main-line section feeding heavy leader knots or offshore systems. Skip: when speed matters more than maximum double-line integrity. Most hands need the bench or knee method a good few times before the reverse wrap stops fighting them, and that’s just what learning this one costs. Mine included.
How I actually check one before it goes on a rod
Before I trust a Bimini, I load both legs by hand and pull past what I expect from a fish, watching the twist column the whole time for any wrap that moves independently of the others. If one shifts, the tension wasn’t even and I redo it rather than hope it holds under a real fish. Watching somebody else’s hands helps more than reading about it, so I still go back to NetKnots’ Bimini Twist animation when I want the sequence refreshed, and Salt Strong’s quick method and Mad River Outfitters’ bench-and-knee breakdown if I want to see two different hand positions doing the same job. THE SIX-MOVE CHECK

- Job. Name what the connection has to do before choosing the knot.
- Material. Confirm the line, leader, rope, wire, and hardware actually suit this structure.
- Route. Trace every pass before tightening anything.
- Dress. Put strands, wraps, and loops in their intended order with no accidental crossings.
- Seat. Tighten in the order this knot needs. More force does not repair bad geometry.
- Test. Inspect the finished shape, load it by hand when appropriate, and retie if anything moves or fails the article-specific checks.
Practice / pass test. Tie this knot three clean times without rushing. Bimini Twist — the short answers
- ALSO CALLED
- The Bimini. No meaningful alternative name — it is called the same thing everywhere. Standard among offshore and big-game crews, IGFA line-class anglers, and light-tackle guides who want a shock-absorbing double.
- KNOT TYPE
- Double-line knot — a tensioned twist column locked by a reverse wrap and half-hitches
- WHAT IT CONNECTS
- Builds a doubled section of main line ending in a loop. That double then feeds a leader connection, a swivel or a loop-to-loop. It is not a terminal knot to a hook and not a line-to-leader knot on its own.
- LINE TYPES
- Mono and fluorocarbon, and braid with a much higher twist count. Braid is slick, so a short column creeps. Stiff heavy fluorocarbon resists bedding down. Not for wire. Also used in fly systems to build class-tippet loops.
- STRENGTH BAND
- High. Load spreads down the whole twist column instead of concentrating in one bend, so a well-tied one is close to a full-strength double — but it is the double-line method most punished by letting tension sag mid-tie.
- DIFFICULTY
- Advanced. Not the moves but the three-way tension: you keep the column loaded with hands, knees or a rod butt while the tag rolls back. Kids can learn the knee method at home. Nobody learns it well on a moving deck.
- STEPS AND WRAPS
- Six moves. Around twenty twists is the classic starting count on mono — more on light line, fewer on stiff heavy line. Braid needs considerably more because it slips. Then the reverse wrap down the column and the locking half-hitches.
- TIE TIME
- A home knot. Sixty to ninety seconds once learned, longer on braid. Tie your doubles at the dock or between drifts, not with a fish boiling behind the boat.
- POOR CONDITIONS
- Poor. It wants sustained even tension, which is the first thing cold hands, gloves, spray and a rolling deck take away. Low light hides gaps in the reverse wrap. Tie it before conditions turn, not after.
- THROUGH THE GUIDES
- The finished column is slim and tapered for its length, so it passes guides better than most heavy joints. What catches on a guide is usually the leader knot beyond it, not the Bimini itself.
- LUBRICATION
- Yes. Wet the column before you compress it and again before the finishing hitches. Dry, the wraps bed down with heat and friction, and both mono and fluorocarbon take damage exactly where the reverse wrap grips hardest.
- TAG END
- Trim close after the locking hitches, roughly an eighth of an inch. Leave slightly more on braid, which creeps. A tag long enough to catch a guide is a tag that will eventually unpick a hitch.
- TOOLS
- None required. A rod butt, your knees or a bench post to hold the loop open helps enormously, and some crews use a dowel or a purpose-made Bimini tool. Nippers to trim.
- BEST SUITED TO
- Offshore and big-game work — tuna, marlin, sailfish, wahoo, king mackerel — and light-line records where a shock-absorbing double matters. Also tarpon and heavy inshore leader systems.
The strength bands are rough on purpose. Published knot tests don’t agree with each other — the same braid-to-leader knot has tested near ninety percent of line strength on one machine and under half on another, because the line brand, its diameter, how fast it got cinched, whether it was wet and whose hands tied it all move the number more than the knot does. Read the band as where this knot sits next to its neighbors, not as a figure to quote.
FIELD INTELLIGENCE
Where it earns its place, and where it costs you
Advantages
- Spreads load down a long twist column instead of concentrating it in one bend, which is why it survives sustained heavy pressure rather than just a single hard pull.
- Gives you a doubled main line exactly where the leader joint sits, so the weakest part of the system has two strands in it instead of one.
- The twist column stretches slightly and takes some of the shock out of a lunging fish at the boat.
- Finishes as a loop, so it feeds a loop-to-loop, a wind-on, an Offshore Swivel Knot or a heavier leader knot without further modification.
Disadvantages
- Slow. Counting the tension setup, it’s the slowest of the three common doubles and it doesn’t get much faster with practice.
- It needs a tension anchor — knees, a rod butt, a second pair of hands — which is exactly what a crowded rolling cockpit doesn’t give you.
- A loose column looks finished from the outside. The fault is invisible until the knot is loaded, and by then you’re guessing which step went wrong.
- On braid the classic twist count is nowhere near enough, and anybody who learned it on mono tends to carry the wrong number straight over.
Use a different knot when
- Spider Hitch — when you need a double line in seconds and accept a weaker, less durable one. How much structure the job actually needs is the question I’d settle before spending the extra minute on this one.
- Australian Plait — when you want the most abrasion-tolerant double under sustained heavy load and you have the time
- Surgeon’s Loop — when all you want is a quick loop for a loop-to-loop and the system will never be loaded hard
- A direct leader knot such as the FG or Double Uni — when the fish will not load the system hard enough to justify a double at all
WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU TRUST IT
The Bimini earns its place when a fish is genuinely trying to break you off and the leader joint has to survive a long fight rather than one hard pull. The useful check is not the twist count — that argument is mostly noise — but whether tension ever dropped. Run a thumbnail down the reverse wrap feeling for a gap, then load both loop legs evenly before the rod goes back in the holder. The real tradeoff is time. A Bimini costs a minute you may not have once a fish is up, so tie your doubles before you leave the dock and carry spares.
What actually makes it fail
- Tension sagging anywhere between the first twist and the last hitch, leaving a soft column that collapses the first time it’s loaded.
- Gaps in the reverse wrap where the tag jumped out of line, usually because the hand holding tension tired before the hand doing the wrapping.
- Finishing hitches that creep, letting the reverse wrap slowly unwind over a session.
- Too few twists for the line — most often a mono twist count carried straight over to braid.
- Uneven loop legs, so one strand takes the whole load and the double was never really a double.
How to test it, and how it ages
Wet it, seat it, then look before you trim. The reverse wrap should cover the twists evenly with no gap you can slide a fingernail into, and the finishing hitches should sit hard against the column with nothing standing proud. Then load it: put both loop legs over something solid and pull steadily past what you expect from the fish, watching the column the whole time. Any wrap that moves independently of the ones beside it means the tension was uneven, and that one gets cut off rather than fished. A steady pull shows you this. A snatch does not.
Over a session: Good over a session, better than most doubles, because the load is shared rather than parked on one bend. Check the finishing hitches after every serious fish — hitches creep before the column does, and once they let go the reverse wrap starts unwinding.
Troubleshooting
Why does my reverse wrap end up loose and gappy?
The hand holding tension gave up before the wrapping hand finished. Anchor the loop on your knees or a rod butt so keeping it loaded is not a question of stamina.
Why does it slip on braid when it holds fine on mono?
Braid is slicker and needs considerably more twists than the classic mono count, plus a properly locked finish. Carrying the mono number over is the usual cause.
How many twists should I actually use?
Around twenty is a starting point for mono, not a rule. Go up on light line and on braid, down on stiff heavy line, and judge by whether the column beds down tight with no gaps.
Why does it test weaker than it should?
Usually one loop leg is longer than the other, so it carries everything alone. Even the legs up, then load both together and check again.
Do I need a tool or a second person to tie this?
No, but you need something to hold the loop open under tension. Knees work, a rod butt works, a dowel works. Bare hands with nothing to pull against is the hardest way to learn it.
