Bimini Twist vs Spider Hitch vs Australian Plait: How Much Double-Line Structure Do You Need?

How I actually decide between Bimini Twist, Spider Hitch, and Australian Plait — by what the double line has to feed into next, not just build time or a strength ranking.

Nobody ties a Bimini because they love tying Biminis. You tie one because the Bristol, the Yucatan, the Offshore Swivel, the Aussie Quickie and a handful of other connections all expect a clean double line to already be sitting there. Rig offshore leaders at the dock and that gets obvious fast: the double is a starting point, and it gets judged by whatever you tie to it next. So “which double-line knot is strongest” is the less useful question. Which one fits the next connection, in the conditions you’ll actually be tying it in, is the one that decides it.

The double line is infrastructure for the connection that comes next.

  • Downstream job: identify the leader, swivel or heavy-tackle connection that will attach to the double.
  • Load duration: a quick doubled section and a double built for sustained heavy pressure are not solving the same problem.
  • Guide/roller passage: bulk, symmetry and how the finish travels through hardware matter in big-game systems.
  • Build conditions: bench time can justify a Bimini or Plait; a moving boat may make a faster Spider Hitch useful despite its tradeoffs.
  • Failure cost: inspect both legs and the finish before attaching anything downstream—a bad double contaminates the whole rig.

All three build a double line, and all three trade tying time against what the double will take. The Spider Hitch is the quick compromise, not the equal of the other two, and anybody selling it as a Bimini shortcut is selling something.

Start with what comes next

I work backward from the connection I’m actually building toward. The Bristol, Yucatan, Aussie Quickie, Offshore Swivel, and the reviewed 100 Percent Arbor systems all lean on a sound doubled structure being there first. So I pick the double-line knot that feeds the rig I actually mean to tie, not the one my hands already know best.

When speed matters

The Spider Hitch is appealing because it’s comparatively fast, and it works in mono or braid with different wrap counts for each. But if that double is about to become part of a heavier, higher-stakes system, I take the extra minutes and build what the rig actually calls for. Saving a few minutes at the dock is a bad trade against the one fish that rig was built for.

The Plait isn’t showing off

The Australian Plait builds a braided section in heavy line. For a while it looked to me like complexity for the sake of looking impressive. It clicked once I thought of it as a way to spread load over a length of line instead of piling it into one spot.

Check it before you tie anything to it

  • Bimini: twist column is compact, the reverse wrap is orderly, the finishing hitches lock the structure, and both legs load together.
  • Spider Hitch: wraps unwind and seat in order; the doubled loop isn’t twisted; braid uses the verified higher wrap range.
  • Australian Plait: the plait is even; no strand jumps across the braid; the finishing loop and wraps are secure before you trim.

When the words run out

Some of these motions just don’t compress into text, and the Bimini’s twist-and-roll is the worst offender. When reading isn’t cutting it, Orvis’s Bimini Twist video/animation and Take Me Fishing’s knot instruction library make good independent cross-checks. Don’t go there hunting for a winner, though. The question is still how much structure, tying time and failure tolerance your rig needs.

And your first few Biminis will probably look like a slinky that lost an argument. That’s fine. The twists even out once your hands learn how much tension to hold, and the only way they learn is by tying a pile of ugly ones at the bench before it counts.
