No single crossover in this knot is hard. What’s hard is still knowing which leg goes next a couple dozen crossovers in, after your hands have quietly started making their own decisions. This isn’t a knot I reach for often — it belongs to heavier tackle than most of what I fish — but I’ve come to respect what it’s actually doing. The Australian Plait builds a double line the patient way: you braid the doubled section back around the standing line instead of twisting it. That makes it slower than a Spider Hitch and mechanically different from a Bimini Twist. The load rides through a long plaited section rather than a twisted loop.
One crossover, drawn six times
What it actually does
Builds a strong double-line section for heavy monofilament and conventional heavy-tackle systems. It’s one of the last places anglers still braid line by hand on purpose.
Length
Plait length tracks the line class and the system. Heavier loads want more braided length underneath them — there’s no shortcut version that skips this.
Guide/roller value
Dressed correctly, the long tapered braid slides through rollers and guides without catching.
What it’s best suited for
Heavy-tackle double-line systems built ahead of time, with a table and no clock running — not a knot to start once a fish is already on.
A connection you measure in inches
You cross a doubled line around the standing line, over and over, in a three-part plait. Every crossover carries a small share of the load instead of asking one tight turn to hold everything. What comes off the far end is a long woven section rather than a compact knot. The strength is in the inches of braid you built, not in how hard you pulled on the last turn. That’s a different kind of trust than most knots ask for, and it took me a while to stop rushing toward a finish line that isn’t really the point.
Building it out to the length the line class wants
- Pull the double-line length you need, then split the working doubled section into two legs you can cross around the standing line.
- Make the first alternating crossover, holding steady tension the whole time.
- Keep the plait going, alternating the legs in the same order, and don’t let one side start doing more of the work.
- Build the plait out to the length the line class and system call for.
- Lock the final crossovers with the documented finishing hitches.
- Load both double-line legs evenly and look over the entire plait before you rig a leader or swivel.
The braid order is hard to hold for that many crossovers, and losing it partway through is ordinary. Pull it apart and re-braid it rather than carrying a soft section into a heavy-tackle fight. Nobody at the dock is timing you.
Failure clue
The plait order got lost somewhere in the middle, which is the one to suspect first. Tension went uneven between the legs. The braid was built too short for the job it’s being asked to do. Or the finishing hitches never really locked, and the whole woven section walks itself apart under load without anybody noticing until it’s already happening.
Slow on purpose
Use it: heavy-tackle double line where a long, smooth plait is worth the time it takes. Skip it: fast field repairs — this isn’t that knot, and rushing it is exactly how the plait order gets lost. Compare: Bimini Twist for the widely used double-line loop, Spider Hitch for speed at the cost of some durability. Tie the plait at the dock with time to spare, and it’s already sitting on the reel when the day gets serious.

- Job. Name what the connection has to do before choosing the knot.
- Material. Confirm the line, leader, rope, wire, and hardware actually suit this structure.
- Route. Trace every pass before tightening anything.
- Dress. Put strands, wraps, and loops in their intended order with no accidental crossings.
- Seat. Tighten in the order this knot needs. More force does not repair bad geometry.
- Test. Inspect the finished shape, load it by hand when appropriate, and retie if anything moves or fails the article-specific checks.
Practice / pass test. Tie this knot three clean times without rushing. Australian Plait — the short answers
- ALSO CALLED
- Australian Plait, sometimes written Plait Knot or Aussie Plait. The name reflects its long association with Australian and New Zealand heavy-tackle crews. Used mainly by big-game anglers building doubles on heavy mono in advance.
- KNOT TYPE
- Double-line knot — a hand-woven three-part plait braided back along the standing line
- WHAT IT CONNECTS
- Builds a long doubled section of main line ending in a loop, which then feeds a heavy leader connection, a swivel or a wind-on. It is not a terminal knot and not a line-to-leader knot on its own.
- LINE TYPES
- Medium and heavy monofilament, which is what it was built around. Fluorocarbon is stiff and awkward to weave. It can be plaited in braid, but braid is slick and the locked finish becomes the weak point. Not for wire.
- STRENGTH BAND
- High. Load is shared across a long plait rather than concentrated in one sharp bend. References often describe both the Australian Plait and Bimini as full-strength doubles, but that label is a test result or design claim, not a guarantee across line classes and tying quality. Treat both as high-strength double-line systems and grade the actual finished structure.
- DIFFICULTY
- Advanced, and more tedious than technical. Any single crossover is easy. Holding the order and even tension through dozens of them is not. A patient teenager can learn it at a table; nobody learns it on the water.
- STEPS AND WRAPS
- Six stages, but the count that matters is crossovers — dozens of them, alternating in one order, built out to the length the line class calls for. Braid wants a longer plait and a more carefully locked finish.
- TIE TIME
- A home knot, plainly. Several minutes, and considerably longer while you are learning. Tie your plaits at the dock the night before. Do not start one with a fish in the spread.
- POOR CONDITIONS
- Poor. It asks for sustained attention and even tension across a long sequence, which cold hands, spray and a rolling deck take away first. Low light hides a lost crossover. This is a bench knot by nature.
- THROUGH THE GUIDES
- Dressed properly, the long tapered plait runs through roller guides and rod tips more smoothly than any compact double, because there is no abrupt lump anywhere along it.
- LUBRICATION
- Wet it before you draw the finishing hitches down. The plait body beds gradually and generates little heat, so lubrication matters far less through the weave than at the lock, where the friction concentrates.
- TAG END
- Trim close after the finishing hitches, roughly an eighth of an inch, and only once you have confirmed the lock has actually bitten. Leave a little more on braid, which creeps under load.
- TOOLS
- None required. A table, good light and something to hold the standing line under steady tension are worth more here than any tool. Nippers to trim.
- BEST SUITED TO
- Heavy-tackle big-game work — marlin, large tuna, sharks — and any system where a long, smooth, abrasion-tolerant double is rigged in advance rather than tied on the water.
The strength bands are rough on purpose. Published knot tests don’t agree with each other — the same braid-to-leader knot has tested near ninety percent of line strength on one machine and under half on another, because the line brand, its diameter, how fast it got cinched, whether it was wet and whose hands tied it all move the number more than the knot does. Use the band to compare this knot with the others, not as a number to quote.
FIELD INTELLIGENCE
Where it earns its place, and where it costs you
Advantages
- Shares the load across dozens of crossovers over inches of line, so no single turn is carrying the fight.
- Long and tapered rather than lumpy, so it runs through roller guides and rod tips more kindly than a compact double.
- The woven body tolerates abrasion well — a scuffed crossover is not the whole connection.
- Nothing to miscount under pressure, because it is built at a bench with time rather than tied in a bite window.
Disadvantages
- Slow. By a clear margin the slowest of the three doubles — minutes, not seconds.
- The plait order is easy to lose halfway, and a lost order leaves a soft section that has to be unpicked and re-woven.
- It consumes inches of line, so you commit to a plait length before you know what the day will ask for.
- The finish is the weak point, not the body: hitches that never truly locked let the whole weave walk itself apart.
- Rarely taught and rarely seen, so few anglers around you will be able to check your work.
Use a different knot when
- Bimini Twist — when you want a full-strength double in a fraction of the time and can hold the tension
- Spider Hitch — when fish are up and you need a double now, accepting a weaker and less durable one
- Surgeon’s Loop — when the double exists only to make a loop and will never see heavy sustained load
WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU TRUST IT
The Plait shines on heavy tackle rigged in advance, where a long smooth double has to run through roller guides and then hold through a fight measured in hours rather than minutes. The useful check is the pitch of the weave — even along the whole length, no slack leg, no crossover standing loose — and then whether the finishing hitches genuinely locked. The tradeoff is time, and it is not a small one. You spend minutes at a bench for a long, distributed double-line structure whose advantage matters most under sustained heavy load. If the rest of the system and the expected load do not justify that build time, a simpler double is the more rational choice.
What actually makes it fail
- The plait order lost partway through, leaving a soft section buried in the middle of the weave.
- Uneven tension between the legs, so one strand carries more than its share along the whole plait.
- A plait built shorter than the line class and the load actually call for.
- Finishing hitches that never truly locked, letting the woven section walk itself apart under load.
- Line already damaged above the plait — the weave is sound and the line feeding it is not.
How to test it, and how it ages
Run it through your fingers along its whole length before it goes anywhere near a swivel. The braid pitch should be even end to end, no crossover standing proud, no leg slack at any point. Slack in one place usually means the order slipped there, so treat the section around it as suspect too. Then load both legs of the double together, steadily, past what you expect from the fish, and watch the weave rather than the lock. Any movement inside the plait means unpick it and start again. A good one looks like rope: uniform, tight and boring to look at.
Over a session: Excellent over a session — the best of the three doubles here, because the weave keeps working even if one crossover scuffs. Check the finishing hitches after every heavy fish, since the lock gives out long before the plait does.

Why do I keep losing the plait order?
Because dozens of near-identical moves are hard to hold in your head. Count crossovers out loud, keep the first leg fixed in your mind, and re-weave rather than carry a soft section into a heavy-tackle fight.
How long should the plait actually be?
As long as the line class and the system call for — heavier loads want more woven length beneath them. There is no short version that keeps the strength.
Is it stronger than a Bimini Twist?
That is disputed and depends on line and technique. Treat them as two full-strength doubles: the Bimini is much faster, the plait is longer, smoother through rollers and more abrasion-tolerant.
Why did it come apart at the end rather than in the middle?
The finishing hitches never locked. The body of the plait is rarely the problem. Seat the lock wet and confirm it has bitten before you trim anything.
Can I tie this one on the water?
