A Double Uni knocking through the guides on every long cast isn’t a subtle sound, and once you notice it you can’t un-notice it. The Aussie Quickie starts after the real work is done. It assumes your braid is already doubled, typically with a Bimini Twist, and only then does the fluorocarbon leader go to work wrapping around it. What you get out of that is a strong heavy-tackle leader connection that stays relatively slim, because you’re not building two bulky opposing barrels.

A braid double line, commonly built off a Bimini loop or section. Skip this and there’s nothing for the wraps to grip.

Heavier braid-to-fluoro leader systems where you want the connection running through guides quietly — that quiet is the whole reason to pick it over a Double Uni.
The leader wraps the doubled braid, not the other way around
Doubling the braid gives the fluorocarbon a wider, less cutting surface to bite on. The fluoro then forms the whole friction package around both braid strands. That’s a different mechanism from an FG, where the braid weaves around a straight leader. In a Double Uni both lines make separate barrels, and neither of those is what’s happening here — which is exactly why it doesn’t slap through the guides the way a Double Uni does.
The six steps, in order
- Create a secure doubled braid section before starting the leader knot.
- Lay about six inches of fluorocarbon leader alongside the doubled braid, then start your wraps right behind the loop and work away from it.
- Wrap leader around both braid strands about 13 times, maintaining clean adjacent turns.
- Bring the leader tag back to the loop, pass it through the loop, and pinch it there.
- Moisten fluoro as appropriate and draw the wraps down progressively.
- Pull-test both braid legs and leader; trim flush enough for the intended guide path.
Failure clue
A weak or uneven braid double is the usual root cause, and everything above it inherits the problem — check that first. After that, look for leader wraps that crossed instead of lying adjacent, or a return path taken in the wrong direction. Bulky tags won’t drop the fish, but they hammer the guides on every cast, which defeats the point of choosing this knot in the first place. Nobody lays thirteen even wraps on the first try, so if the first attempt looks like a bird’s nest, cut it off and start again. It costs two minutes.
Worth the prerequisite, or not
Use it: doubled braid to fluoro in heavier systems where a slim connection through the guides actually matters. Skip it: single-line braid, if you don’t want to build the prerequisite double first. Compare: FG for a very slim single-braid leader connection, Bristol or Yucatan for other doubled-line leader systems, Double Uni for easier field tying when you’re willing to trade some guide noise for speed.

- Job. Name what the connection has to do before choosing the knot.
- Material. Confirm the line, leader, rope, wire, and hardware actually suit this structure.
- Route. Trace every pass before tightening anything.
- Dress. Put strands, wraps, and loops in their intended order with no accidental crossings.
- Seat. Tighten in the order this knot needs. More force does not repair bad geometry.
- Test. Inspect the finished shape, load it by hand when appropriate, and retie if anything moves or fails the article-specific checks.

Aussie Quickie — the short answers

- Aussie Quickie, sometimes listed as the Australian Quickie. No widely used alternative name and no documented inventor. Associated with Australian heavy-tackle and doubled-line practice, where Bimini doubles are routine.
- KNOT TYPE
- Line-to-line knot — leader wrapped around a doubled braid section and returned through its own opening
- WHAT IT CONNECTS
- Doubled braid main line to a fluorocarbon or mono leader. Not a terminal knot, and not usable on single-strand braid; the double is the thing the leader grips.
- LINE TYPES
- Braid that has already been doubled, joined to fluorocarbon or heavy mono. Fluorocarbon is the usual leader because it holds a wrap package well. It will not work on single braid, and it is pointless between two similar lines.
- STRENGTH BAND
- High. The doubled braid is the reason — the leader grips two strands, and a failure on one leg does not end the connection. It depends entirely on the quality of the double beneath it, and published rankings across this group vary widely.
- DIFFICULTY
- Intermediate for the wraps, Advanced overall, because you must first tie a good Bimini or equivalent double. Not a beginner knot, and not one to teach a child until the double is solid.
- STEPS AND WRAPS
- Six steps, and the first one is building the double. About thirteen leader turns around both braid strands, then the leader tag returns through the starting opening. The count does not change for braid type; the double does the adapting.
- TIE TIME
- A home knot in practice, because of the prerequisite. The wrap package itself takes about a minute; the Bimini in front of it takes longer. Most anglers build these before leaving the dock.
- POOR CONDITIONS
- Fair. The wrapping stage tolerates a moving deck, but laying thirteen even turns with cold hands or in low light is slow, and the Bimini beforehand is worse. Build spares at home rather than fighting it in the dark.
- THROUGH THE GUIDES
- Slim for a doubled-line connection and noticeably quieter through guides than a Double Uni, which is the main reason to tie it. It is still a wrap package on a doubled main line, so it is not as slim as a good FG.
- LUBRICATION
- Yes. Wet the leader before drawing the wraps down. Fluorocarbon closing dry over doubled braid burns where the turns bed in, and the leader is the part that breaks.
- TAG END
- Trim the leader tag flush enough that a thumbnail run over it does not catch, because whatever catches your skin catches a guide. Trim the braid tags from the double short and clean at the same time.
- TOOLS
- None strictly required. Nippers to trim. Many anglers use a Bimini tool or a knee and a foot to build the double first, which is the genuinely awkward part of the job.
- BEST SUITED TO
- Heavy-tackle and offshore work — tuna, kingfish, mackerel, big snapper, and any doubled-line system where a leader join has to run through guides on the cast.
The strength bands are rough on purpose. Published knot tests don’t agree with each other — the same braid-to-leader knot has tested near ninety percent of line strength on one machine and under half on another, because the line brand, its diameter, how fast it got cinched, whether it was wet and whose hands tied it all move the number more than the knot does. Use the band to compare this knot with the others, not as a number to quote.

Where it earns its place, and where it costs you
Advantages
- The leader grips two braid strands rather than one, which is where its holding power comes from.
- Slim and quiet through the guides compared with any Uni-family join.
- The doubled main line gives a measure of redundancy behind the connection.
- It suits heavy leader well, where opposing barrels would be enormous.
- The wrap package itself is easy to inspect: even adjacent turns, nothing crossed.
Disadvantages
- It needs a good Bimini or equivalent double first, which is a knot in its own right and the real cost of using this one.
- Useless on single-strand braid, so it is not a knot you can fall back on unprepared.
- Thirteen even turns are slow to lay and easy to cross with cold hands.
- Everything above the double inherits the double’s faults, and a poor Bimini is hard to spot afterward.
- Not as slim as a well-tied FG despite the effort involved.
Use a different knot when
- FG Knot — when you are fishing single-strand braid and want the slimmest possible connection
- Bristol Knot — when you already have a doubled loop and want a simpler wrap onto it
- Yucatan Knot — when you want a doubled-line leader join with a shorter, simpler wrap sequence
- Double Uni — when the leader has to be rebuilt right now and you will accept guide noise for speed
WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU TRUST IT
This is a dock knot for a heavy-tackle day: build the double and the connection at home, then fish it. It earns its place where a Double Uni knocks through the guides on every long cast and the leader is too heavy for opposing barrels to make sense. Check underneath first — the braid legs of the double should still lie together, not separated, before the wraps are drawn down. The tradeoff is preparation. You are trading a knot you can tie almost anywhere for a slimmer connection that depends on a sound doubled line before you even start.
What actually makes it fail
- A weak or uneven double beneath it, which the wrap package cannot fix and usually hides.
- Leader wraps crossing over each other instead of lying adjacent, so load concentrates on one turn.
- The return through the starting opening taken in the wrong direction, which leaves the wraps unlocked.
- Braid legs separating under the wraps, so the leader grips one strand and cuts into it.
- Wraps drawn down dry, burning the fluorocarbon where it beds onto the braid.
How to test it, and how it ages
Look under the wrap package before you seat it: the two braid legs should be lying together and parallel, and the leader turns should be adjacent with none crossed. Wet it and draw the wraps down progressively rather than in one pull. Then load both braid legs against the leader with a firm steady pull and watch for any travel. Finish by running a thumbnail over the leader tag — if it catches you, it will catch a guide, and that defeats the point of the knot.
Over a session: Very stable over a session once seated, and the doubled main line means wear on one braid leg is not immediately fatal. Inspect the double itself as often as the connection; that is where age and abrasion show first.
Troubleshooting
Can I tie it without doubling the braid?
No. The doubled section is what the leader grips. On single braid, tie an FG or an Alberto instead.
Why did it pull off under load?
Almost always the double, not the wraps. Rebuild the Bimini and check that both legs are even before you wrap anything onto them.
Why do my wraps keep crossing?
You are wrapping faster than you are placing. Lay each turn against the last with a thumb holding the package, and stop to straighten before you draw it down.
Why is it still noisy through the guides?
Proud tags, or a wrap package that bunched instead of lying in a smooth column. Retie it; you cannot trim a lumpy package smooth.
How many turns do I need?
About thirteen in the common method. Fewer than that and the package does not have enough grip on the braid; many more and you are adding bulk for nothing.
