TRAILER TIE-DOWNS
The last rope work of a boat day usually happens in a gravel lot after dark, with everybody tired and somebody already asking about food. It’s also the only rope all day with a highway underneath it.

What I reach for it on
Pulling a line genuinely tight and keeping it there. Covers, tarps, and gear that has to stay put for the drive home.
The purchase
A loop in the middle of the line acts as a rough pulley, giving me something in the region of three to one. Friction in the rope eats part of that, and it’s still far more than my arms alone would manage.
Locking it off
Two half hitches around the doubled line below the loop, tied while I hold the tension. They hold, and they still come undone when I want them to.
How I know it’s wrong
The line’s gone soft by the first fuel stop. Rope stretches and webbing beds into itself, so the first few miles quietly take the slack out of everything I tied.
WHY I DON’T MESS AROUND WITH THIS ONE
Three to one is enough force to break the thing I’m tying down.
The hitch multiplies what my arms can do. That’s the entire point of it, and it’s also the part that needs respect. I can crush a soft cover rail, deform a rod tube, or load a light line past what it’ll take, all while leaning my weight into it and feeling like I’m just doing a good job. I match the rope and the anchor points to the pull I’m about to generate.
Anything that leaves a trailer at road speed becomes a problem for whoever’s behind me. A cooler, a fuel can, a cover that starts flogging and then tears free. Rope and a trucker’s hitch are the right tool for covers, tarps and loose gear. The hull itself rides on the winch strap, the safety chain and rated transom tie-downs, not on rope I tied in a parking lot.
I check the tension again after the first few miles. Pull off somewhere safe and put a hand on every line and every strap. Nylon stretches, webbing settles, and a hitch that was drum tight in the lot will have given some of that back by the time I reach the highway. That check is the difference between a tie-down that works and one that only looked right when I tied it.
How I tie it
- Make one end fast to the upper anchor point. A bowline over a rail or a cleat hitch both do it.
- Partway down, form a loop in the standing part. A slipped loop or a directional figure eight is worth the extra second, because a plain overhand loop can be brutal to get back out after real tension.
- Run the working end around the lower anchor point, the trailer frame or a tie-down eye, and bring it back up through the loop.
- Pull down toward the lower anchor point, in line with the rope. Hauling out sideways wastes the purchase and drags the loop out of shape.
- Keep that tension with one hand and lock it off with two half hitches around the doubled line just below the loop.
- Coil the tail and secure it. Nothing should be free to flap in the wind or reach a wheel.
When it’s the wrong knot
I never use it for lifting, and I never put a tensioned line over anything a person’s working under. It’s a way of tightening rope, not rigging gear, and there’s no rated capacity attached to it.
Stretchy rope defeats it. Cheap polypropylene keeps giving back the tension I put in, which makes it a poor choice here even though it’s usually the rope already rolling around the truck bed. I use low-stretch line if I want the hitch to still be tight at the far end of the drive.
On a trailer, straps rated for the load do this job with less rope and less thinking, and that’s what the boat itself should ride on. I keep the trucker’s hitch for the cover, the gear, and the evening a strap’s gone missing and I still have to get home. It’s the one knot that turns my own arm strength into something that can genuinely crush a cooler, and I like that it can — I just don’t forget it while I’m pulling.

THE SIX-MOVE CHECK
Job → Material → Route → Dress → Seat → Test
- Job. Name what the connection has to do before choosing the knot.
- Material. Confirm the line, leader, rope, wire, and hardware actually suit this structure.
- Route. Trace every pass before tightening anything.
- Dress. Put strands, wraps, and loops in their intended order with no accidental crossings.
- Seat. Tighten in the order this knot needs. More force does not repair bad geometry.
- Test. Inspect the finished shape, load it by hand when appropriate, and retie if anything moves or fails the article-specific checks.
Practice / pass test. Tie this knot three clean times without rushing. Trucker’s Hitch — the short answers
- ALSO CALLED
- Also called the dolly knot, wagoner’s hitch, lorry driver’s hitch or power cinch. It is a system of three parts rather than one knot, and the names vary by trade rather than by region.
- KNOT TYPE
- Tensioning system: a fixed end, a loop in the standing part used as a crude pulley, and a lock-off
- WHAT IT CONNECTS
- Pulling a line genuinely tight and holding it there — covers, tarps and loose gear on a trailer. Not for lifting, not for towing, and not for the hull, which rides on rated straps, chains and tie-downs.
- LINE TYPES
- Low-stretch polyester or a decent three-strand nylon. Cheap polypropylene defeats it, because it keeps giving back the tension you put in. Slick double-braid makes the lock-off less secure. Frozen line will hold neither the purchase nor the hitches.
- STRENGTH BAND
- Not a strength knot — it is a force multiplier, and the risk is exceeding what the rope, the anchor points or the load will take. It costs rope strength at the loop, where the bend is tight, and that is the point most likely to break. The answer is bigger rope, not harder pulling.
- DIFFICULTY
- Intermediate. Three skills in one: a fixed end, a loop that will come back out, and a lock-off tied one-handed while you hold tension. Kids can learn the shape, but judging how hard to pull is the real content.
- STEPS AND WRAPS
- Six moves in three parts: make one end fast, form a loop partway down, pass the end around the lower anchor and back up through the loop, haul in line with the rope, lock off with two half hitches on the doubled line, then coil and secure the tail.
- TIE TIME
- A home knot rather than a boat knot. Thirty to sixty seconds done properly, and the parts that take the time — a loop that will come back out, and a lock-off you can release under tension — are the parts worth the time.
- POOR CONDITIONS
- Hard in the cold, in gloves and after dark, which is exactly when it usually gets tied. The purchase means tired hands still generate real force, so the risk in poor conditions is overtightening rather than the opposite.
- THROUGH THE GUIDES
- No rod guides. The practical equivalent: the loop and the doubled leg must run clear of sharp trailer frame edges, and the tail must be coiled and secured so nothing can flog in the wind or reach a wheel.
- LUBRICATION
- Lubrication does not apply. Wet nylon stretches more and gives back more tension over the drive, so favour low-stretch line. Icy rope will not hold the lock-off. A soaked overhand loop under full tension is the thing that will not come back out afterwards.
- TAG END
- Enough to lock off with two half hitches and coil the rest. Never leave a long tail loose on a trailer — it flogs, it finds a wheel, and it is the part that ends up on the road.
- TOOLS
- None required. Gloves, because you can burn a hand on the doubled line. A ratchet strap rated for the load is the honest alternative, and the correct answer for the hull itself.
- BEST SUITED TO
- Trailer covers, tarps, loose gear, a canoe or kayak on roof bars, and the evening a strap has gone missing. Never the hull tie-down, never lifting, and never a tensioned line over anything a person is working under.
The strength bands are rough on purpose. Published knot tests don’t agree with each other — the same braid-to-leader knot has tested near ninety percent of line strength on one machine and under half on another, because the line brand, its diameter, how fast it got cinched, whether it was wet and whose hands tied it all move the number more than the knot does. Use the band to compare this knot with the others, not as a number to quote.
FIELD INTELLIGENCE
Where it earns its place, and where it costs you
Advantages
- It multiplies arm strength by roughly three to one, so a line goes genuinely tight rather than hand-tight.
- It needs no hardware at all, only rope and two anchor points.
- The lock-off releases under tension, so it comes undone without cutting.
- It can be re-tensioned at a pullout after the first few miles without starting again.
Disadvantages
- It generates enough force to crush a cover rail, deform a tube or overload a light line, and it feels like careful work while you do it.
- It has no rated capacity, so it must not carry the hull, a lift, or anything overhead.
- Stretchy rope defeats it, and cheap polypropylene is exactly the rope most likely to be in the truck.
- A plain overhand loop in the middle can be brutal to get back out after real tension.
Use a different knot when
- A rated ratchet strap — for the hull on a trailer, for anything with a load rating, and any time straps are available
- Taut-line hitch — when you want hand tension you can adjust weekly rather than maximum tension locked off
- Winch strap, safety chain and transom tie-downs — for the boat itself — the hull never rides on rope tied in a parking lot
- Round turn and two half hitches — when the line only needs to be made fast, not tensioned
WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU TRUST IT
It earns its place when a cover has to stay flat for two hours at road speed and nothing else will pull the line that tight. Match the rope and the anchor points to the force you’re about to generate, then check again after the first few miles: nylon stretches, webbing beds in, and a line that was drum tight in the gravel lot has given some of it back by the highway. The tradeoff is blunt. The purchase that makes it useful is also enough to break the thing you are tying down.
What actually makes it fail
- Overtightening, which crushes a rail, deforms a tube, or loads a light line past what it will take.
- Stretchy polypropylene giving the tension back over the first few miles.
- A plain overhand used as the loop, which sets solid under tension and has to be cut out.
- A lock-off tied loose or in slick line, so it walks and the tension bleeds away.
- Used on the hull instead of rated straps, chains and transom tie-downs.
How to test it, and how it ages
Before you pull, look at what you are pulling against: the anchor points, the rope diameter, and the part of the load that will take the squeeze. Then haul in line with the rope toward the lower anchor rather than out sideways, and lock off with two half hitches around the doubled line while you hold the tension. Test it by pushing hard on the load itself rather than plucking the rope. The real test comes after the first few miles — pull off somewhere safe and put a hand on every line and every strap.
Over a session: It loses tension over the first part of a drive as rope stretches and webbing settles, then holds steady. Plan on one re-check after the first stretch of road, and inspect the loop for damage after any heavy tensioning.
Troubleshooting
Why is the line soft by the first fuel stop?
Rope stretch and the load settling, which is normal. Re-tension after the first few miles, and use low-stretch line rather than polypropylene.
I cannot get the loop out afterwards — what did I do?
You used a plain overhand loop. Use a slipped loop or a directional figure eight instead; both come back out after full tension.
How tight is too tight?
When the load starts to deform. The purchase is around three to one, which is enough to crush a cover rail or a rod tube while it still feels like careful work.
Can I use it to hold the boat on the trailer?
No. The hull rides on the winch strap, the safety chain and rated transom tie-downs. Keep the hitch for the cover and the gear.
Why does my lock-off keep slipping?
Slick rope, or half hitches tied loose while the tension was already sagging. Hold the tension with one hand, snug the hitches up against the loop, and add a third if the line is slippery.
