Anchor Bend: Two Turns Through the Ring, Not One

An anchored boat never really holds still, so the ring files away at the rope all day. Two turns spread that wear out. Tie it and check it on deck, because once it’s over the side you’re done checking.

RODE TO ANCHOR

Every other knot on a boat you can glance at whenever you want. This one goes over the side with the anchor and works for hours where nobody can see it, and the first sign it’s failed is the shoreline starting to slide past the hull.

Panel 3 is the whole knot. The end tucks back through both turns together. Tuck it through just the near one and it looks every bit as finished, which is the problem.

The older name

I’ve heard it called the fisherman’s bend too. Same knot, same turns — you’ll see both names for it depending on who taught it to you.

Why two turns and not one

An anchored boat never actually stops moving, and the ring drags across the rope every time it shifts. Two turns spread that motion out instead of grinding it into one short piece of rope.

How I know it’s wrong

One turn through the ring instead of two, or an end tucked under only the near turn. Both of those ease themselves open as the load pulses — slow, then all at once.

WHAT IT HAS TO SURVIVE

The ring is a file, and the swell runs it back and forth all day whether I’m watching or not.

An anchored boat rises, drops, yaws with the wind, swings when the tide turns. Every one of those movements pulls rope across the metal of the ring. With a single turn, all of that lands on one short section of rope in one spot, and it stays there the whole time I’m anchored.

Two turns share the movement out and hold the rope down against the ring instead of letting it saw at a single point. The finishing half hitch around the standing part is what keeps the whole thing from easing open when the load comes in pulses instead of a steady pull. None of this is visible from the boat once it’s over the side. That’s the whole reason to get it right on deck.

Nylon rode stiffens and swells once it’s wet, so I tie the turns a little loose and then work them snug so they lie fair against the ring — side by side, nothing stacked, nothing crossed. I check this connection before the anchor goes over, every trip, no exceptions. A rode that parts offshore leaves a boat with no way to hold position, usually in the exact conditions that made anchoring necessary in the first place.

How I tie it

  1. Pass the working end through the anchor ring, then through a second time, so I’ve got two turns. Keep them loose enough to get a finger under.
  2. Take the working end around behind the standing part.
  3. Tuck it back through both turns together, entering from the same side it came out of. This is the step the whole knot depends on.
  4. Work the turns down against the ring so they lie flat and side by side, with the rope bearing evenly on the metal.
  5. Finish with a half hitch around the standing part and snug it up against the turns.
  6. If the rode’s going to stay on the anchor, I seize the tail to the standing part with waxed twine, or tape it down. A tail left loose is what gets fouled or shaken free.

When it’s the wrong knot

The name misleads people a little. A bend normally joins two ropes together, and this one doesn’t — it’s rope to a fitting, nothing else.

Where the rode meets chain, I use a properly sized shackle and mouse the pin. I don’t substitute a knot for hardware there. And where the rode lives permanently on the anchor, a thimble with an eye splice is the standard termination — which is what most ready-made rodes already come with. The anchor bend earns its keep when I’m making that connection myself, on the water, out of the rope I actually have aboard.

This is the one knot I trust the least by feel and check the most by eye. It only has to do its job once per trip, right before the anchor goes in, and I look at it every time — because after that, it’s wet and down there and past checking until the anchor comes back up.

THE SIX-MOVE CHECK

Job → Material → Route → Dress → Seat → Test

  1. Job. Name what the connection has to do before choosing the knot.
  2. Material. Confirm the line, leader, rope, wire, and hardware actually suit this structure.
  3. Route. Trace every pass before tightening anything.
  4. Dress. Put strands, wraps, and loops in their intended order with no accidental crossings.
  5. Seat. Tighten in the order this knot needs. More force does not repair bad geometry.
  6. Test. Inspect the finished shape, load it by hand when appropriate, and retie if anything moves or fails the article-specific checks.

Practice / pass test. Tie this knot three clean times without rushing. A tie passes only when it matches this article’s What to check before you trust it geometry, shows none of the listed failure clues, and survives the stated load/inspection test. If you cannot tell why one attempt is better than another, keep practicing—the lesson is recognition, not memorization.

Anchor Bend — the short answers

ALSO CALLED
Fisherman’s bend is the same knot, and both names are in common use. Also written as anchor hitch, which is the more honest label — it attaches rope to a fitting rather than joining two ropes.
KNOT TYPE
Hitch to a ring or shackle: two round turns, the end tucked back through both, finished with a half hitch
WHAT IT CONNECTS
Rope rode to the ring, eye or shackle of an anchor, tied aboard from the line in the locker. Not for joining two ropes, not a substitute for a shackle where rode meets chain, and not a fixed loop.
LINE TYPES
Three-strand nylon rode above all, where the turns bed in well. Fine in double-braid nylon and polyester. On stiff or slick modern cordage the turns bed less and the finishing half hitch carries more of the job. Wet nylon swells and the turns tighten themselves.
STRENGTH BAND
Solid for a hitch. Two turns spread the bend over the ring instead of loading one tight radius, so less is lost than in a single-turn hitch. Every knot costs rope strength, and on a boat the answer is rode diameter, not technique. It can set hard after a night at anchor.
DIFFICULTY
Beginner to intermediate. Nothing hard in the moves, but the end tucks back through both turns and that is where people go wrong. A child can learn it; the real test is whether they can spot a single-turn version.
STEPS AND WRAPS
Two turns through the ring, one tuck back through both of them together, one finishing half hitch around the standing part. Four moves and one wrap count, and that count is worth saying out loud. Add a seizing on the tail if the rode lives on the anchor.
TIE TIME
A deck knot rather than a rushed one. Under a minute once learned. Tie it and check it before the anchor goes over the side, not while it is already going.
POOR CONDITIONS
Fine with cold hands and gloves, because the moves are large. Low light is the risk: an end tucked under only the near turn looks finished. Do it on deck with the anchor still aboard, not hanging off the bow roller.
THROUGH THE GUIDES
No rod guides here. It sits at the anchor ring and never passes a fairlead or chock. What matters is that the finished knot and the seized tail clear the bow roller, since a bulky tail can catch as the anchor comes home.
LUBRICATION
Nylon swells wet and the turns tighten on their own, which helps this knot. Work the turns fair before they soak. After a long spell loaded and submerged it can be stiff to open, and frozen rode makes it close to impossible.
TAG END
Several inches at least. Where the rode stays on the anchor between trips, seize the tail to the standing part with waxed twine or tape it down. A loose tail is what gets fouled or shaken free where nobody can see it.
TOOLS
None to tie. Waxed twine or tape for the seizing, gloves for handling rode, a knife within reach. A correctly sized shackle with a moused pin where rode meets chain — that is hardware, and no knot replaces it.
BEST SUITED TO
Anchor rodes on any boat where the connection is made aboard from the rope you actually have. Also serviceable on a mooring pennant ring. Not for rode to chain, not for towing, and not a life-safety knot.

The strength bands are rough on purpose. Published knot tests don’t agree with each other — the same braid-to-leader knot has tested near ninety percent of line strength on one machine and under half on another, because the line brand, its diameter, how fast it got cinched, whether it was wet and whose hands tied it all move the number more than the knot does. Use the band to compare this knot with the others, not as a number to quote.

FIELD INTELLIGENCE

Where it earns its place, and where it costs you

Advantages

  • Two turns share the movement across the ring instead of grinding it into one short section of rope.
  • It can be tied on deck from the rope in the locker, with no splicing gear and no hardware beyond the anchor.
  • The finishing half hitch keeps it from easing open under pulsing load, which is exactly how an anchored boat pulls.
  • It is easy to inspect at a glance: two turns, one tuck through both, one hitch.

Disadvantages

  • It works out of sight and underwater, so a mistake is only discoverable before the anchor goes over.
  • After heavy load in wet nylon it can set hard and be slow to untie.
  • The name misleads. People treat it as a bend and try to join two ropes with it.
  • A spliced thimble eye is the better permanent termination, so this is a field connection rather than the best one.

Use a different knot when

  • Eye splice on a thimble — when the rode lives permanently on the anchor and you want the strongest, most abrasion-tolerant termination
  • Shackle with a moused pin — where the rode meets chain, or anywhere hardware belongs instead of a knot
  • Round turn and two half hitches — for a general ring or rail tie you will be standing near and untying soon
  • Bowline — when you want a fixed loop to drop over something rather than a connection to a fitting

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU TRUST IT

This is the one knot on the boat that gets checked hardest and trusted least, and that is the correct order. An anchored boat never stops moving, so the ring works across the rope every time the hull rises, yaws or swings with the tide. The useful check is not the tuck but the turns: two of them, lying fair and side by side against the ring, nothing crossed or stacked. After that, look at the tail, seized or taped, because a loose one fouls. The tradeoff is that it only has to be right once per trip, and after that it is wet, down there, and past checking.

What actually makes it fail

  • One turn through the ring instead of two, so all the movement lands on one short section of rope.
  • The end tucked under only the near turn, which looks finished and eases open under pulsing load.
  • No finishing half hitch, leaving nothing to stop the turns working loose.
  • A loose tail that fouls on the anchor or shakes free where nobody can see it.
  • Chafe at the ring itself, which is rope damage rather than knot failure and no knot rescues it.

How to test it, and how it ages

Work the turns down so they lie flat and side by side against the ring, with the rope bearing evenly on the metal, then trace the end with a finger and confirm it comes back through both turns rather than one. Snug the half hitch up hard against them. Load it with a steady lean against the standing part rather than a snatch. A good one shows two parallel turns and a hitch tight to them, with nothing standing proud.

Over a session: Stable through a day at anchor once seated, and it tends to tighten rather than loosen as nylon wets and swells. The wear to watch is on the rope where it bears against the ring, not on the knot itself.

Troubleshooting

Why did my anchor come untied from the rode?

Almost always one turn instead of two, or an end tucked under only the near turn. Both look finished on deck and both ease open under a pulsing load.

Is this the same thing as a fisherman’s bend?

Yes. Same knot, same turns, two names depending on who taught it to you.

Why will it not untie after a long anchoring?

Wet nylon swells and the turns bed in. Work the half hitch off first, then roll the turns back around the ring rather than pulling on the tail.

Can I use it to join the rode to the chain?

No. That connection belongs to a properly sized shackle with the pin moused. A knot there is the wrong tool.

Do I need to seize the tail every time?

Only if the rode stays on the anchor between trips. If you tie it fresh each time and check it before it goes over, a good tail is enough.
