CHINOOK SALMON · SPECIES PROFILE
What a Chinook is up to matters more than how big it is.
Chinook are the largest Pacific salmon, which makes them easy to flatten into “big salmon, heavy gear.” What actually changes the fishing is the job the fish is doing. One feeding around offshore bait, a bright one staging in tidewater and one pushing upriver toward spawning water don’t want the same presentation just because the scientific name stayed put.

IDENTIFICATION
Blackmouth is a useful nickname because the gum line really is black.
Fresh Chinook are silver with a darker blue-green to black back. Black spots cover the upper back and both lobes of the tail. The lower gum line carries black pigment—one of the fastest field marks against coho.
Coho usually have a pale or white gum line and spots mainly on the upper tail lobe. Pink salmon carry large oval spots on both tail lobes but lack the Chinook black gum. Chum and sockeye generally lack the Chinook-style heavy tail spotting.
As spawning approaches, Chinook darken into brown, red, olive, purple or nearly black forms and males develop a stronger hooked jaw. The gum and tail pattern remain more useful than overall color.
OCEAN FEEDING
Find the bait layer before you build the salmon story around the surface.
Marine Chinook are active fish predators. Herring, anchovies, sand lance, sardines and other locally abundant forage dominate many coastal diets, with squid and crustaceans also contributing.
That makes depth a moving target. Chinook can feed close to the surface when bait is high and much deeper when forage, temperature or light moves down. Trolling equipment exists largely to control that vertical problem.
Spoons, plugs, flashers with bait or artificial squid, and mooched bait can all work. The first question is still where the bait is. A perfect herring presentation running forty feet over the herring school is not perfect in the way that matters.
Current edges, rips, underwater structure and temperature boundaries can concentrate prey in the ocean just as a river seam does at smaller scale.
TIDEWATER
The fish has left the feeding ocean and has not fully committed to the river yet.
Estuaries and lower river channels can hold bright Chinook staging before upstream migration. Salinity, tide height and tidal current all change the route.
Tide height changes which channels and shoreline water are physically available. Tidal current changes how bait, scent and the fish itself move through that water. Treating “high tide” and “strong current” as the same condition loses information.
Trolling, mooching, bait, spinners and other local methods can all fit tidewater. The important part is keeping the presentation at the depth and path the staging fish are actually using.
THE RIVER RUN
A migrating Chinook is solving current, distance and temperature before it is solving your lure.
Once Chinook enter freshwater, the river becomes a migration route toward natal spawning habitat. Fish move through runs, deeper pools, seams and softer current while conserving enough energy to continue upstream.
That is why the deepest hole is not automatically the best water. A pool edge or lane that lets a large fish stay inside the route without holding in the hardest flow can be more useful.
Run timing varies radically by population. Spring, summer and fall Chinook are named partly by when adults enter freshwater, and individual river systems can contain more than one run. Use current run counts and local fishery information rather than carrying one “Chinook season” from another coast or river.
Warm water can slow migration and increase mortality. Dams and long migration distances amplify that problem in some interior populations.
RIVER PRESENTATION
Know the drift before you blame the fish.
Agency guidance includes drift fishing, floats, spinners, plugs, bait and fly methods depending on the river and legal season.
Repeated takes at one depth support the lane. Constant snags, a drift racing faster than the current or a float that never reaches travel depth all mean the fish hasn’t had a clean chance to answer.
FOOD BEFORE THE RUN
The biggest Pacific salmon got that way by eating a lot of fish.
Juvenile Chinook eat insects, crustaceans and small fish in freshwater and estuaries. Marine fish shift heavily toward fish and squid.
The exact prey changes by region and year. Herring and anchovies can dominate one coastal system while sand lance or other forage matters more somewhere else.
That local prey field should shape an ocean presentation more than any generic “Chinook lure” list. Match what the bait looks like, where it sits and how it moves.
WARM WATER & LONG RUNS
A river can become physically passable and biologically expensive at the same time.
Chinook need cold enough water to migrate, hold and spawn successfully. High temperature increases metabolic cost and can combine with low flow, disease and passage delay to reduce survival.
Interior runs in the Columbia and Snake systems make the problem visible because some fish travel hundreds of miles and pass multiple dams before reaching spawning water. A few degrees of river temperature can matter across a migration that lasts weeks.
Local thermal closures and agency guidance outrank any one species-wide threshold. If a river is under a warm-water restriction, the fish doesn’t need you debating whether a different lure would shorten the fight.
SPAWNING
The big fish ends the trip in gravel.
Female Chinook dig redds in gravel where moving water keeps oxygen reaching the eggs. Males compete and fertilize the eggs. After spawning, both sexes die.
That means the dark fish on a spawning bed is at the end of its one reproductive opportunity. Eggs remain in the gravel after adults are gone, making redd avoidance important for wading anglers.
Young fish then express different rearing strategies. Some Chinook migrate toward estuaries and ocean relatively early; others rear in freshwater longer. Those life-history differences are part of why “Chinook salmon” contains multiple named runs and management units rather than one coastwide schedule.
HATCHERY, WILD & LISTED FISH
The clipped fin can change what you’re legally allowed to do.
Chinook support hatchery programs, tribal fisheries, commercial harvest and recreational fisheries across the Pacific coast and Great Lakes. Hatchery fish can be marked—often with an adipose-fin clip—to create selective fisheries that protect wild fish.
Some native Chinook populations are listed under the Endangered Species Act, while other populations remain abundant enough to support substantial harvest. The legal status attaches to the run and population, not simply to the species name.
So checking for the mark is part of fishing for these, not paperwork. A legal hatchery Chinook and a protected wild fish can look almost identical except for the mark and fishery context.
Check the current river or marine regulations before the fish is hooked. In-season salmon rules can change with run strength.

GREAT LAKES CHINOOK
Same salmon, different ocean.
Chinook were introduced to the Great Lakes to create a sport fishery and help control abundant pelagic forage such as alewives. They now support major trolling and tributary fisheries.
These fish complete the entire life cycle inside freshwater. They feed in open lake water, then return to tributaries to spawn and die just as Pacific Chinook return from the ocean.
The presentation logic looks familiar—find forage depth offshore, then fish staging and migration routes near tributaries—but the management, prey base and hatchery system are Great Lakes problems rather than Pacific ones.

How large and old can Chinook get?
Chinook are the largest Pacific salmon and can exceed fifty pounds, with exceptional historical fish much larger. Most adults are far smaller and age varies by population. Extreme size is interesting biology, not a presentation decision.
Spring, summer and fall Chinook
Run names refer to adult migration timing and correspond to genetically and ecologically distinct populations in many basins. The categories are useful only when attached to a particular river; a “spring Chinook” in one drainage isn’t a coastwide fishing date.
Do Chinook stop feeding in freshwater?
Returning adults are no longer living the marine feeding life and complete migration on stored energy, but salmon can still strike lures, bait and flies. Whether one particular river strike was feeding or pure aggression is unknowable for that fish, so there’s no point pretending to know.
What nobody has shown
No universal Chinook response to barometric pressure, moon phase, one tide direction or one lure color is established strongly enough to replace run timing, forage depth, current and presentation path.
Spring, summer and fall Chinook runs are basin-specific, and a date that fits the Columbia can be flatly wrong on a coastal river two states over. That catches people new to this fish more often than any gear choice does: they trust a calendar built for somebody else’s river. Current run counts for the water you’re actually standing next to are the fix, and they beat anybody’s memory of last season.
