TENKARA · LEVEL LINE TO LILLIAN
Pick up tenkara level line for the first time and the stiffness is the surprise. It holds a loop shape on its own, which is why the attachment isn’t a part you buy — you build it into the butt end of the line yourself. That loop has to take a day of casting and a fish without walking loose, and then come off clean without anybody leaning on the lillian or the rod tip. The coming-off part is where tenkara rods get broken, which is a pretty dumb way to lose one after the fish already let you go.
How the level line locks on — six stages
What you’re actually holding
Tenkara level line — usually fluorocarbon-based, stiffer in the hand than it looks on the spool.
What it clips onto
The lillian cord at the rod tip, commonly with a stopper knot near its end. Check for that knot before you assume it’s there.
How it grips
The lillian passes through the level-line slip loop twice, then both wraps are drawn snug together. If the rod uses a stopper knot, the wraps seat behind it. No hardware or glue; the security comes from the doubled wrap and a correctly formed slip loop.
Removal — the part that actually matters
Open the loop first, every time. Never pull on the lillian or the rod tip to get the line off. That’s how tips break.
The two lillian wraps are the connection. The stopper is backup when the rod uses one.
The level line forms a small slip loop with a pull tab. Pass the soft lillian through that loop once, then a second time, keeping the two wraps together before you snug the level line. Some systems use a stopper knot near the end of the lillian and some do not; when one is fitted, both wraps sit behind it. The pull tab is what makes removal safe. Support the lillian, keep the hard rod tip protected inside the rod sections, and open the slip loop instead of pulling against the tip. Building the loop is still an indoor job. Attaching it correctly at the stream should take seconds.
Tie this before you leave, not at the stream
- Form a small slip loop in the butt end of the level line and preserve a usable pull tab.
- Support the lillian and, if the rod uses a stopper knot, confirm that it is sound before attaching anything.
- Pass the lillian through the level-line slip loop once.
- Pass the lillian through the same loop a second time. A third pass is an optional variation some references use, not a requirement.
- Keep the two wraps together and draw the level line snug; if a stopper is fitted, seat the wraps behind it.
- Before fishing, pull-test the attachment while supporting the lillian. To remove it, protect the hard rod tip inside the rod sections and open the slip loop with the level-line tag/pull tab instead of pulling on the tip.
Failure clue
One wrap instead of two leaves less grip than this connection is designed around. A slip loop tied backwards can run open under load instead of cinching. An oversized loop may never seat firmly. If the rod uses a stopper knot, seating the wraps on top of it instead of behind it adds another bad load point. A swallowed pull tab is mostly an inconvenience. The failure I care about most is removal by pulling on the lillian or hard rod tip; that puts the load into the most fragile part of the system.
Level line means you tie the loop yourself

How I check it before I trust it
Before the first cast, I hold the rod tip up, grab the line below the loop, and give it a real pull — not a tug, an actual pull, the kind a decent fish would put on it. If the two wraps stay seated and the level-line loop does not creep, I fish it. If a stopper is fitted, I also check that both wraps remain behind it. Any movement is enough reason to rebuild the attachment rather than hope it settles later. THE SIX-MOVE CHECK

- Job. Name what the connection has to do before choosing the knot.
- Material. Confirm the line, leader, rope, wire, and hardware actually suit this structure.
- Route. Trace every pass before tightening anything.
- Dress. Put strands, wraps, and loops in their intended order with no accidental crossings.
- Seat. Tighten in the order this knot needs. More force does not repair bad geometry.
- Test. Inspect the finished shape, load it by hand when appropriate, and retie if anything moves or fails the article-specific checks.
Practice / pass test. Build the loop and attach it three times at the kitchen table without rushing. An attempt counts when both wraps sit together, none of the failure clues above show up, and it survives a real pull. Tenkara Level Line Connection — the short answers
- ALSO CALLED
- Level line to lillian, lillian hitch, level line loop. Named by function rather than tradition; used by tenkara anglers running fluorocarbon level line, which is most of them outside Japan.
- KNOT TYPE
- Slip-loop attachment in level line with the lillian passed through the loop twice; a stopper knot, when fitted, acts as backup positioning rather than creating the connection
- WHAT IT CONNECTS
- Attaches level line to the lillian at a tenkara rod tip. There is no reel, so this is the only connection between rod and line. Not a knot for any rod that has guides.
- LINE TYPES
- Tenkara level line, almost always fluorocarbon and stiffer than it looks on the spool. That stiffness is what lets the loop hold its shape. Limp mono makes a poor loop here, and braid a worse one.
- STRENGTH BAND
- Not a strength knot — it is a holding and release connection. It should be the last thing to give: the tippet is meant to be the fuse in a system with no reel and no drag.
- DIFFICULTY
- Beginner to intermediate, and misleadingly so. The loop itself is easy; building a tidy small one in stiff level line, with a working pull tab, is what takes a few attempts.
- STEPS AND WRAPS
- Six moves. Build the level-line slip loop, pass the lillian through that loop twice, keep both wraps together, and draw them snug; a third lillian pass is an optional variation. If a stopper knot is fitted, the wraps seat behind it. Removal is by reopening the level-line slip loop, not by pulling on the rod tip.
- TIE TIME
- The loop is a kitchen-table job, made once and left on the line. Attaching it at the stream then takes seconds, which is the whole design: build slow, connect fast.
- POOR CONDITIONS
- Attaching is fine cold and gloved because there is nothing to count. Building or rebuilding the loop streamside with numb fingers, an inch from a rod tip, is where people get into trouble.
- THROUGH THE GUIDES
- There are none. A tenkara rod has no reel and no rings, so the connection sits permanently at the tip and never has to pass anything. Read this row as: no constraint at all.
- LUBRICATION
- Not needed for the connection itself. Wet the slip loop knot when you build it in fluorocarbon, which dislikes a dry cinch, but the loop going onto the lillian is dry work.
- TAG END
- Trim the loop knot’s tag close, but leave the pull tab — the small second loop that lets you open the connection. That tab is not a tag to be tidied away, it is the removal tool.
- TOOLS
- None. A line spool or holder to keep the loop from getting crushed between sessions is worth having, and that is the whole kit.
- BEST SUITED TO
- Trout, char and small-stream fish on light tackle. Not species-specific — chosen by rod system. Anyone fishing a tenkara rod with level line ends up here.
The strength bands are rough on purpose. Published knot tests don’t agree with each other — the same braid-to-leader knot has tested near ninety percent of line strength on one machine and under half on another, because the line brand, its diameter, how fast it got cinched, whether it was wet and whose hands tied it all move the number more than the knot does. Read the band as where this knot sits next to its neighbors, not as a figure to quote.

Where it earns its place, and where it costs you
Advantages
- No hardware, no glue and nothing to buy. The connection is built from the line itself.
- The loop is made once at home, so the streamside job is a few seconds of opening and seating.
- Line length is yours to choose, because you build the butt end rather than accept a shop-made one.
- It comes off cleanly at the end of the day without touching the lillian, which is the part of a tenkara rod most easily damaged.
- Easy to inspect: two clean lillian wraps either stay seated under load or they do not; if a stopper is fitted, their position against it is another visible check.
Disadvantages
- The attachment depends on a correctly formed slip loop and two clean lillian passes. If the rod uses a stopper knot, that stopper also has to be sound; not every level-line system requires one.
- A slip loop built the wrong way round runs open under load instead of cinching, and it looks the same either way.
- Stiff fluorocarbon takes a set, so a loop that has been cinched and released many times stops seating the same way twice.
- Lose the pull tab into the knot and removal becomes fingernail work an inch from the rod tip.
- The connection tempts people to pull on the lillian or the tip to get the line off, which is how tenkara rods break.
Use a different knot when
- Traditional braided line connection — when your line is braided tenkara line that already came with its own end loop
- A commercial lillian connector or a replacement lillian with a stopper — when the rod’s lillian has no stopper knot and you would rather not build one
- A larger loop and a plain girth hitch — when you want a connection that is easier to open with cold hands and can accept the extra bulk
- A tippet ring or short braided butt section — when you would rather protect the level line and change the running section often
WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU TRUST IT
This connection is judged by two things that pull in opposite directions: it has to hold all day through casting and a fish, and it has to come off in seconds without loading the rod tip. Build the loop at home, small and tidy, with a pull tab you can find by feel. At the rod, make two clean lillian passes and check the stopper knot if that system uses one. Then give the attachment a real pull before the first cast, not a symbolic tug. The tradeoff is that everything depends on parts you made yourself, on a rod with no reel and no second chance if the line comes off mid-fight.
What actually makes it fail
- Only one lillian pass, or two wraps that cross instead of sharing the load. If the rod uses a stopper knot, seating the wraps on the wrong side of it creates another failure path.
- A slip loop built backwards, which runs open under load instead of cinching down.
- An oversized loop that never really grips the lillian at all.
- A loop tightened onto the lillian’s own stopper knot rather than behind it, crushing the cord.
- Removing the line by pulling on the lillian or the rod tip, which loads a tenkara rod in the one direction it cannot take.
How to test it, and how it ages
Hold the rod tip up, take the line just below the loop, and give it a real pull — the sort of load a good fish would put on it, not a polite tug. The two wraps should stay seated without moving. Any creep means the attachment is not ready and you rebuild it there, not later. If a stopper knot is fitted, check that both wraps are bearing behind it rather than on top of it. Do this again each time you rig up, because a loop that has been cinched and released a few times does not seat the same way twice.
Over a session: Good over a day if it seated properly at the start, but fluorocarbon level line takes a set and the loop gradually loses its shape. Rebuild the butt loop when it starts looking tired rather than at the end of a season, and inspect the lillian for fraying at the same time.
Troubleshooting
Why does the attachment creep?
Check the route before blaming the rod: the lillian should pass through the slip loop twice and those wraps should sit together rather than crossing. If the rod uses a stopper knot, also check that both wraps are behind it and that the stopper itself is sound. Then reseat and pull-test.
Why does it slip under load when it feels tight in my hand?
The slip loop is built the wrong way round, so load runs it open rather than closing it. Rebuild the loop at the table where you can see which way it draws.
How do I get the line off without wrecking the rod?
Open the loop with the pull tab first, every time. Never pull on the lillian or the rod tip to free it. If the tab has been swallowed, work the loop open with the line itself, not by leaning on the tip.
Why can I not find the pull tab any more?
It was drawn into the knot when the loop cinched. Build the loop with a longer tab than looks necessary, and seat the connection by pulling the line rather than the tab.
Should I build this loop on the water?
No. Build it at home, in the light, in warm hands. Carry a spare line already looped instead, which is the honest answer to a loop that fails at the stream.
