The spot only matters while the reason the fish used it is still there.
A striper waypoint is really a note about where the bait and the current were on one particular day. On the coast the fish migrate between rivers, estuaries and ocean water. In reservoirs, landlocked stripers chase open-water bait through whatever layer has cool enough water and enough oxygen. Neither kind is parked on a rock waiting for you to come back, so when the reason moves, the fish usually went with it.

IDENTIFICATION
The stripes are obvious until a hybrid makes them less obvious.
Adult striped bass are silver to olive-backed fish with dark horizontal stripes running from behind the gill plate toward the tail. Several of those stripes usually remain fairly continuous. The body is longer and less deep than a typical hybrid striped bass.
Hybrid striped bass—often called wipers—are produced from striped bass and white bass. They usually have a deeper body and more broken or offset stripes. White bass are smaller and more compact, and their stripes are generally less numerous and less prominent.
Striped bass also have two separate dorsal fins, a large mouth and a forked tail. Freshwater fish can look darker than bright ocean-run fish, but the stripe pattern remains the useful field clue.
If the water is regulated differently for striped bass and hybrids, use more than one mark. Stocked reservoirs can contain both.
COASTAL FISH MOVE
Migration makes “my spot” a temporary relationship.
Atlantic striped bass are anadromous. Adults live much of the year in coastal and estuarine water, then move into freshwater rivers to spawn. Large migratory fish can travel substantial distances along the Atlantic coast between seasonal feeding and spawning areas.
That movement is why coastal fisheries can turn on or off so abruptly. A point, beach, inlet or rip can be excellent while bait and migrating fish are passing, then quiet after the school moves north, south, upriver or offshore.
The major spawning systems include Chesapeake Bay tributaries, the Hudson River and the Delaware River, with other rivers contributing as well. Spring river runs create concentrated fisheries, and post-spawn fish redistribute back toward estuarine and coastal feeding water.
Water temperature, flow and forage influence timing, but no single temperature works as a coastwide arrival date. Local reports, agency surveys and actual bait in the water beat a calendar you remember from another state.
CURRENT CREATES INTERCEPT LANES
Stripers don’t need a rock if moving water already built the structure.
Rips, bridge openings, inlet throats, channel edges, river mouths and points become useful because current accelerates, slows, turns or concentrates bait there. The fish can sit on one side of that change and intercept prey moving through it.
That’s why tide height and tidal current should stay separate. Tide height changes which shoreline and flat water is available. Tidal current changes the delivery path. A high tide near slack water is a different fishing problem from the same water level with a hard current running through the inlet.
Birds, surface feeds and visible bait can expose the relationship instantly. No surface activity doesn’t prove the fish left; they may simply be deeper. The next useful check is vertical—where is the bait in the water column?
A famous waypoint with no moving water and no bait is just a famous waypoint.
If you only look one thing up before a tide trip, make it the current, not the height. Height tells you what ground is underwater. Current tells you whether anything is being delivered to that ground, and delivery is the part the bait cares about.
FORAGE FIRST
A school of bait can move the fish farther than the shoreline changes.
Adult striped bass are strongly fish-eating. Menhaden, river herring, shad, anchovies, silversides, eels and other local forage can all become important. The dominant prey changes by region, season and water body.
That can mean several different presentation problems in the same acre. Fish driving menhaden against the surface can be shallow and fast. Fish following suspended herring may be twenty feet down with no visible surface sign. Fish holding near bottom in a river channel may need a completely different path again.
Match the prey category and especially the prey depth before worrying about the exact color name. A baitfish-shaped lure ten feet above the bait school is still ten feet above the bait school.
In reservoirs, threadfin and gizzard shad often become the central forage. Landlocked stripers can therefore behave more like pelagic open-water predators than like a shoreline bass despite carrying “bass” in the name.
LANDLOCKED RESERVOIR STRIPERS
Open water is habitat when the food lives there.
Stocked striped bass populations support major fisheries in reservoirs far from the Atlantic. These fish do not make an ocean migration, but they retain the same tendency to follow pelagic forage and usable water conditions.
Channel edges, old river beds, points reaching into deep water and open-water bait concentrations can matter more than visible cover. Electronics can be genuinely useful here because the important structure may be thirty feet below the boat and the fish may be suspended above it.
Summer creates a temperature-and-oxygen problem. Deep water can be cooler but lose dissolved oxygen below the thermocline. Shallow water can carry plenty of oxygen but become too warm. Stripers concentrate where the two requirements overlap, sometimes in a narrow vertical band.
That can also make summer mortality a management issue in southern reservoirs. A fish brought rapidly through warm surface water from a cool deeper layer may already be stressed before the fight and handling are added.
The useful reservoir question is therefore not simply “how deep?” It is where forage, temperature and oxygen overlap now.
PRESENTATION
Make the lure or bait cross the lane the fish is actually using.
Live bait, jigs, plugs, swimbaits, spoons, flies and trolling presentations all catch striped bass. The method matters because it controls depth and path.
Marks, birds or bait without a strike can mean the presentation is missing the depth or angle. A short burst of action followed by silence can mean the school moved, not that the lure suddenly forgot how to catch fish.
The coordinate was only ever good because of what was moving through it.
NATURAL BAIT & CIRCLE HOOKS
The hook rule exists because deep hooking is a real mortality problem.
Atlantic coast striped-bass management requires non-offset circle hooks when anglers use natural bait in recreational striped-bass fisheries, with limited jurisdiction-specific exceptions. The rule was adopted to reduce deep hooking and release mortality.
So when bait is the method, the hook is part of fishing for this species, not a tackle footnote. A circle hook works differently from a J-hook: let the fish move off and allow the hook to rotate toward the corner of the jaw rather than swinging hard immediately as though setting a traditional hook.
Regulations still vary by state, water and specific fishery. Check the current local rule before using bait. Coastwide management measures establish a floor; jurisdictions can be more restrictive.

WARM WATER & RELEASE
A large striper in hot water can run out of margin fast.
Striped bass are cool-water fish, and warm-water stress becomes especially important in summer reservoir fisheries and warm estuaries. High temperature, low dissolved oxygen, long fights and air exposure can stack.
The exact physiological threshold changes with acclimation, salinity, fish size and oxygen, which is why you won’t find one “don’t fish above X” number here. Local closures, agency guidance and the actual recovery of the fish are better guides.
Use tackle heavy enough to shorten the fight, support large fish horizontally, keep air exposure brief and revive the fish in clean moving water when necessary. If released fish are repeatedly struggling, that’s a fishing-condition problem, not an invitation to perfect the photo faster.
Large females matter disproportionately to spawning output, which adds another reason to handle big migratory fish with less ceremony.
A fish that keeps rolling instead of holding upright once it’s let go is telling you the fight ran too long for that water temperature. Shortening the next fight matters more than finding a gentler grip.

Coastal migration versus reservoir movement
Atlantic striped bass can make large seasonal migrations along the coast and into spawning rivers. Landlocked fish can’t make that ocean migration; they instead follow forage, temperature and oxygen within a reservoir system. The same species-level behavior—movement toward usable prey habitat—shows up at very different geographic scales.
How deep do striped bass live?
There is no stable species-wide number. Coastal fish may feed in surf or deep channels; reservoir fish may suspend at whatever depth holds bait and adequate oxygen. “Depth of forage inside usable water” is more transferable than a maximum or average depth.
Why year-class strength is so variable
Striped-bass recruitment depends on spawning-stock size plus river flow, temperature, prey and survival of eggs and larvae. Strong and weak year classes are a normal feature of the stock history. One good juvenile index does not erase several poor years, and one weak year is not the whole population.
Record fish and extreme age
Striped bass can grow very large and live for decades. Those extreme numbers are fun to read about. They add almost nothing to deciding whether current, bait and depth still make a location useful.
Pressure, moon and clouds
No defensible source supports one universal striped-bass response to barometric pressure, moon phase, cloud cover or tide direction. Tide current, forage, migration timing, temperature and oxygen change the physical situation directly and are better places to start.
