The run gets deeper halfway down and your yarn is suddenly sitting at the wrong height. If it’s tied into the leader-tippet junction, fixing that means nippers, a cut, and a re-tie. If it’s hanging on this loop, you loosen it, slide the yarn up, close it back down and keep drifting. Two anglers, same water, one of them fishing and one of them re-rigging — that’s about the whole case for this knot.

The leader butt or mid-section, with a bundle of yarn indicator material held in the loop.
What it gets me the other knot doesn’t
The slip loop can be deliberately loosened, repositioned, and closed again. A Double Uni indicator is fixed wherever the junction sits; this one gives you a controlled adjustment path without pretending a tight knot should freely slide.
Where I don’t put it
Fine tippet. A bulky loop on thin material either kinks the leader or never closes properly. I want some backbone under it — the butt or mid-leader, not the last few feet.
Not a load junction
This loop has one job, holding the indicator. It isn’t joining two pieces of leader, and I don’t ask it to be.
The whole point is that it lets go.
I start with an open overhand in the leader, then return the tippet end through that open overhand to create the slip loop that actually holds the yarn. Yarn goes into that new loop and the loop closes around the base of the bundle. Nothing is meant to become a permanent load junction. When depth changes, I deliberately loosen the slip loop, reposition or remove the yarn, then close and test it again rather than trying to force a tight knot to slide.
Nearly every other knot gets graded on how much load it carries before it quits. This one gets graded backwards. If it held on forever like a Double Uni junction, it’d be the wrong knot, because I’m tying it for depth changes mid-day, not for strength.
How I tie it
- Choose a leader section with enough backbone to carry the indicator without a hard hinge forming under it.
- Form an open overhand knot in that leader section and leave it loose.
- Take the tippet end back through the still-open overhand. That return creates the slip loop that will hold the indicator.
- Put a modest bundle of yarn into the new slip loop, then pull the leader to close the loop around the yarn base.
- Shape the yarn and test both jobs: it should survive a hard casting-direction tug, and it should still release when you deliberately loosen the slip loop for repositioning.
Failure clue
If I tied it onto tippet that was too fine, the loop cinches down hard and leaves a permanent kink I’m not straightening back out — that section of leader is compromised for the rest of the day. Go the other way, with too much yarn stuffed into the loop, and it never closes all the way, so the indicator creeps down the leader every time I don’t want it to. Neither one shows up while I’m standing at the truck tying it. Both show up around the fourth cast, which is why I test the slide and the hold before I ever get in the water, not after.
Where this one belongs, and where the other one does
I pick this when I expect to reposition the indicator during the day — new water, new depth, and I don’t want to cut anything to get there. I skip it when a commercial sliding indicator would just be less fuss for the same job, no shame in that. And when I know exactly where I want the yarn and I’m not planning to move it, the Strike Indicator Double Uni parks it at the leader-tippet junction instead, which is a cleaner rig if adjustability isn’t what I’m paying for.
How I check it before it goes in the water
Two tugs, every time. First I tug the yarn straight out, the direction a hard cast would pull it — if it shifts under that, the loop’s not closed enough yet. Then I tug the loop itself along the leader, the direction I’d slide it to change depth, just to confirm it actually moves when I ask it to and isn’t cinched down like a permanent knot. A loop that fails either one of those isn’t ready, and I’d rather find that out on the bank. - Job. Name what the connection has to do before choosing the knot.
- Material. Confirm the line, leader, rope, wire, and hardware actually suit this structure.
- Route. Trace every pass before tightening anything.
- Dress. Put strands, wraps, and loops in their intended order with no accidental crossings.
- Seat. Tighten in the order this knot needs. More force does not repair bad geometry.
- Test. Inspect the finished shape, load it by hand when appropriate, and retie if anything moves or fails the article-specific checks.

Strike Indicator Loop Knot — the short answers
- ALSO CALLED
- Yarn indicator loop, indicator slip loop. No settled name — anglers mostly describe it rather than name it. Nymph anglers fishing yarn indicators use it almost exclusively.
- KNOT TYPE
- Adjustable slip loop — a holder, not a connection
- WHAT IT CONNECTS
- Traps a bundle of yarn indicator material on the leader butt or mid-section so it can be moved during the day. It joins nothing and carries no fish load. It is not a substitute for a leader-to-tippet knot.
- LINE TYPES
- Monofilament and fluorocarbon leader with some backbone — butt or mid-leader. It does not belong on fine tippet, where it kinks. Not a braid or fly line knot.
- STRENGTH BAND
- Not a strength knot — structural and holding. It is judged the opposite way from the rest of the library: it has to grip enough to survive a cast and let go on purpose, and a version that never lets go has failed at its actual job.
- DIFFICULTY
- Beginner. A loose loop, some yarn, and a controlled close. The judgement is how hard to close it and how much yarn to use, and both come from a few minutes of practice rather than from technique.
- STEPS AND WRAPS
- Five moves, no wrap count. Form an open overhand in the leader, return the tippet end through that overhand to create the slip loop, insert yarn, close, then test hold and deliberate release. The return pass is what makes this more specific than a generic loose loop.
- TIE TIME
- Fast. Fifteen to twenty seconds to tie, and a few seconds to reposition later, which is the whole reason it exists.
- POOR CONDITIONS
- Good. Nothing to count, nothing to orient, and it can be worked with cold hands. Wind is the only real nuisance, because loose yarn goes where it likes.
- THROUGH THE GUIDES
- Bulky by nature, and it sits on the leader where it passes the tip ring on every cast. Keeping the loop small and the yarn bundle trimmed is what keeps it from knocking and from hinging the turnover.
- LUBRICATION
- Lightly, or not at all. Wet the leader if you are closing the loop firmly, mostly to avoid a kink. There is no hard cinch here, so this is the rare knot where dry closing does little harm.
- TAG END
- No tag in the usual sense — the leader runs on through. What you trim instead is the yarn, and trimming it to shape matters more than most anglers think for both visibility and turnover.
- TOOLS
- None. Nippers to shape the yarn. Floatant on the yarn is genuinely useful and does more for the indicator than any change to the knot will.
- BEST SUITED TO
- Not species-specific — chosen by the method. Trout and grayling nymphing above all, and any dead-drift presentation where depth needs changing through the day.
The strength bands are rough on purpose. Published knot tests don’t agree with each other — the same braid-to-leader knot has tested near ninety percent of line strength on one machine and under half on another, because the line brand, its diameter, how fast it got cinched, whether it was wet and whose hands tied it all move the number more than the knot does. Use the band to compare this knot with the others, not as a number to quote.
FIELD INTELLIGENCE
Where it earns its place, and where it costs you
Advantages
- It loosens and slides, so you change depth in seconds instead of cutting the leader and rebuilding a junction.
- It leaves the leader as it was when you take it off, which a knotted-in indicator junction does not.
- It is fast enough to adjust between drifts, so you actually fish the depth you meant to rather than the depth you rigged for at the truck.
- On fly freedom it does something indirect but real: the indicator does not touch the fly, but where you put it sets how deep and how freely the nymph drifts, and a small tidy loop keeps the leader turning over instead of hinging.
- Yarn quantity and shape are yours to choose, so one loop covers a whole range of indicator sizes.
Disadvantages
- Tied on fine tippet it cinches down and leaves a permanent kink, and that section of leader is compromised for the day.
- Too much yarn in the loop and it never closes fully, so the indicator creeps down the leader whenever you do not want it to.
- A big loop with a big bundle hinges the leader and ruins turnover, which costs more presentation than any knot detail.
- It gives the fly no freedom of its own. If the fly needs a pivot at the eye, that is a separate knot at the fly.
- Neither failure mode announces itself at the truck. Both show up several casts in.
Use a different knot when
- Strike Indicator Double Uni — when you know where you want the indicator and adjustability is not worth paying for
- A commercial sliding indicator — when the fuss of yarn and a loop is more trouble than the adjustability is worth
- A dry-dropper rig — when you would rather the indicator were a fly that can also catch a fish
- No indicator at all — when you are fishing tight-line or euro style and the leader itself is the indicator
WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU TRUST IT
Its moment is a day where the depth keeps changing. Loosen, slide, close, keep fishing — while the angler next to you cuts out a knotted junction and rebuilds it. Judge it the opposite way from the rest of the library: it has to hold through a hard cast and still let go on purpose. It gives the fly no freedom at the eye; that job belongs to whatever knot is at the nymph. What it does affect is drift, because indicator position sets depth and a bulky loop hinges the leader. Keep the loop small, trim the yarn, and give it two tugs before wading in.
What actually makes it fail
- Tying it on tippet that is too fine, so the loop cinches hard and leaves a kink that will not straighten.
- Overstuffing the loop with yarn, so it never closes and the indicator creeps down the leader.
- Closing it too hard, which turns an adjustable loop into a permanent one and defeats the point.
- A loop and bundle large enough to hinge the leader, killing turnover and drift.
- Yarn that has gone waterlogged, which is a dressing problem rather than a knot problem but reads as failure all the same.
How to test it, and how it ages
Two tugs before you wade in. First pull the yarn straight out, the way a hard forward cast would load it: if it shifts, the loop is not closed enough. Then push the loop itself along the leader, the way you would slide it to change depth: if it will not move, you have cinched it into a permanent knot and it is no longer the knot you wanted. Also look at the leader where the loop sits — no sharp kink, and small enough that the leader still turns over.
Over a session: It loosens gradually over a session, which is by design rather than a fault. Expect to snug it once or twice through the day, and check the leader under it for a kink each time you move it. Retie on fresh leader if a kink has set.
Troubleshooting
Why does my indicator keep sliding down the leader?
Too much yarn in the loop, so it never closes properly. Use a smaller bundle and close the loop a little firmer.
Why is there a permanent kink in my leader now?
You tied it on material that was too fine, or closed it too hard. Move it to the butt or mid-leader where there is backbone under it.
Why has my leader stopped turning over?
The loop and yarn bundle together are big enough to hinge it. Trim the yarn and keep the loop small.
Why will the loop not slide when I want to change depth?
It was closed like a permanent knot. Close it just enough to grip, then test the slide before you fish it.
Does this affect how my nymph drifts?
