How to Tie a Riffle Hitch and Make a Swung Fly Wake

A Riffle Hitch won’t hold a fish and was never supposed to. It moves where the leader leaves the fly, which is the difference between a swung fly tracking dead and one pushing a V across the current.

PRESENTATION HITCH · NOT PRIMARY KNOT

A wet fly swinging dead straight behind the tippet is tracking, not waking. The fix is almost insultingly small: a half-hitch or two around the head, added after the real knot and never touching it. The fly goes on first with a real terminal knot — the hitch comes after, sitting around the head or shank so the leader exits below or beside the eye, and the fly skates instead of tracking straight behind the tippet.

The fly must already be secured by a separate terminal knot.

Fly geometry

It only works when the head or shank gives the hitch somewhere firm to sit without fouling the materials.

Purpose

Changes how the fly tracks and skates. It adds nothing to the strength of the connection, and I don’t ask it to.

Moving the exit point below the eye

One or two half-hitches around the fly shift where the leader leaves it. A small offset is enough to change how a wet fly or a salmon and steelhead pattern rides and wakes across the current. The hitch is secondary by design. If it slips, the primary knot should still hold — that’s the whole reason I never let it stand in for real tying.

Fly on first, hitch second

  1. Tie the fly securely with its normal terminal knot first.
  2. Make a loose half-hitch in the leader large enough to pass over the fly head.
  3. Slide that hitch into position around the head/shank where it will not trap hackle or wing material.
  4. Add a second hitch only when the intended presentation calls for more stability.
  5. Set gently and confirm the leader exits in the desired direction while the primary knot remains untouched.

Where it goes wrong

No hard structure under it, and it slides. A trapped hackle or wing, and the fly stops behaving. If the leader exits on the wrong side the presentation flips around, and if it gets asked to do the terminal knot’s job, it fails at the one thing it was never built for. Seating a hitch cleanly on a fly pattern you haven’t hitched before usually takes a few tries, and that’s just what it costs.

Reserved for flies you want to wake

How I check it

THE SIX-MOVE CHECK

Job → Material → Route → Dress → Seat → Test

  1. Job. Name what the connection has to do before choosing the knot.
  2. Material. Confirm the line, leader, rope, wire, and hardware actually suit this structure.
  3. Route. Trace every pass before tightening anything.
  4. Dress. Put strands, wraps, and loops in their intended order with no accidental crossings.
  5. Seat. Tighten in the order this knot needs. More force does not repair bad geometry.
  6. Test. Inspect the finished shape, load it by hand when appropriate, and retie if anything moves or fails the article-specific checks.

Practice / pass test. Tie this knot three clean times without rushing. KNOT SPEC

Riffle Hitch — the short answers

ALSO CALLED
Riffle Hitch. Also called the Portland Creek Hitch or Portland Hitch after the Newfoundland river where it became established. Used mainly by Atlantic salmon, sea trout and steelhead anglers fishing waking flies.
KNOT TYPE
Presentation hitch, added on top of an existing terminal knot
WHAT IT CONNECTS
Nothing structural. It repositions where the leader leaves an already-attached fly so the fly skates and wakes across the current. The fly must already be tied on with a real terminal knot; this is not that knot.
LINE TYPES
Ordinary nylon or fluorocarbon fly leader and tippet. Line type barely matters, because the hitch is not carrying the load. Limp leader beds down on the head more readily than stiff heavy leader.
STRENGTH BAND
Not a strength knot — not a load-bearing connection at all. Judge it on whether the fly wakes, not on breaking load. If a Riffle Hitch is ever the thing holding your fish, the terminal knot underneath it has already failed.
DIFFICULTY
Beginner. One or two half-hitches, no counting, no tension to manage. The judgment — where on the head it sits and which side the leader exits — is what takes water time to develop.
STEPS AND WRAPS
Three or four moves on top of a finished knot: form a loose half-hitch large enough to pass over the fly head, slide it into place on hard structure, add a second hitch only if the swing calls for more stability, then set it gently and check the leader exit.
TIE TIME
Very fast. Five to ten seconds, and it can be added, moved or removed mid-swing without retying the fly, which is much of the reason it survives on salmon rivers.
POOR CONDITIONS
Good in most conditions because there is nothing to tension. In low light the risk is seating it on soft hackle instead of hard head structure without noticing, which quietly ruins the presentation.
THROUGH THE GUIDES
It sits at the fly, so guide passage is not the question. What matters is that the hitch does not add bulk that fouls the wing or catches drifting weed on the swing.
LUBRICATION
Not for strength. Wetting helps the hitch slide into position on the head without dragging materials, but there is no cinching load here and no heat to worry about.
TAG END
There is no tag. The hitch is formed in the standing leader above a knot that is already tied and trimmed. Nothing here should be cut, and cutting anything means you are on the wrong knot.
TOOLS
None. If anything, keep your nippers away — the primary knot below is the one already trimmed and finished.
BEST SUITED TO
Atlantic salmon above all, plus steelhead and sea trout on waking patterns. Chosen by presentation rather than species — whenever a skated fly across current is the point.

The strength bands are rough on purpose. Published knot tests don’t agree with each other — the same braid-to-leader knot has tested near ninety percent of line strength on one machine and under half on another, because the line brand, its diameter, how fast it got cinched, whether it was wet and whose hands tied it all move the number more than the knot does. Use the band to compare this knot with the others, not as a number to quote.

FIELD INTELLIGENCE

Where it earns its place, and where it costs you

Advantages

  • Turns a fly that tracks straight behind the leader into one that skates and wakes across current.
  • Added, moved or removed in seconds without disturbing the terminal knot underneath.
  • Costs nothing in leader length and leaves no trimmed tag behind.
  • Reversible mid-swing, so you can test waking against a dead swing on the same fly and the same fish.

Disadvantages

  • Carries no load and adds no security whatsoever — it is presentation only.
  • It slides out of position when there is no hard head or shank structure under it.
  • Set on the wrong side of the fly, the presentation reverses and the fly rides badly.
  • It can trap hackle or wing material and stop the fly behaving at all.
  • Useless whenever you want the fly to track straight and swim below the surface.

Use a different knot when

  • A proper terminal knot — Orvis, Davy or clinch — always, because the hitch never replaces one; it sits on top of one
  • Harvey Dry Fly Knot — when you want the terminal knot itself to control tippet exit angle rather than adding a hitch
  • Turle Knot — when you want pull centred along the shank of a turned-eye fly instead of offset below the eye
  • No hitch at all — when the fly should swim below the surface and track straight behind the leader

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU TRUST IT

The Riffle Hitch is the one entry here that is not a connection. It is a presentation tool, and it earns its place on a swung fly over salmon or steelhead when a waking fly is what moves them. Shift the leader exit below or beside the eye and the fly stops tracking and starts skating, dragging a V across the surface. The useful check is where the hitch is bedded — on hard head or shank structure, never on soft hackle — and which side the leader exits, since the wrong side reverses the whole effect. The tradeoff is nothing structural: it adds no security and never should.

What actually makes it fail

  • No hard structure beneath it, so the hitch slides along the shank and the wake dies.
  • Hackle or wing trapped under the hitch, which stops the fly riding properly.
  • The leader exiting the wrong side of the fly, reversing the intended presentation.
  • Being asked to hold the fly on, which is the one job it cannot do.
  • Set so tight it distorts the head materials rather than sitting neatly against them.

How to test it, and how it ages

Check the terminal knot first, before the hitch exists — that is the connection carrying the fish. Then set the hitch and look at three things: it is bedded on hard head or shank, no hackle or wing is trapped under it, and the leader leaves on the side you intended. The real test happens on the water. Cast across and watch the fly on the swing: a correct hitch makes it skate and push a visible wake. If it tracks straight and dead, the hitch has moved or the leader is exiting the wrong side.

Over a session: It works loose more readily than a knot does, especially after a fish or a snag, and it is meant to. Expect to reset it during a session, and check the wake on every few swings rather than assuming it is still in place.

Troubleshooting

Why does my fly stop waking after a few casts?

The hitch has slid out of position. It needs hard head or shank structure under it; a smooth or soft-headed fly will not hold one.

Can I use this instead of a knot to save time?

No. It carries no load. The fly has to be secured by a proper terminal knot before the hitch goes anywhere near it.

Why did the fly start riding backwards or badly?

The leader is exiting the wrong side, or hackle got trapped when the hitch went over the head. Slide it off and reset it.

One hitch or two?

Start with one. Add the second only when the first will not stay put on the swing — more hitches mean more chance of fouling materials.

Does it weaken my connection?

No, and it does not strengthen it either. It sits above a finished knot and neither helps nor hurts what that knot is holding.
