How to Tie the Orvis Tippet Knot and Skip the Blood Knot’s Barrels

Two long Blood Knot barrels are a lot to ask of fading light. The Orvis Tippet Knot does the same leader job with one short crossing, as long as each end goes through the right opening.

The Blood Knot is the one most people learn first, and it stays worth trusting. It’s also slow enough to talk you out of re-tying when you should have, because winding two long barrels feels like too much to ask of fading light. The Orvis Tippet Knot fixes that problem instead of lecturing you about it — one compact crossing instead of two opposing coils, and Orvis teaches it as a strong, easier stand-in for the Blood Knot when you’re building or patching a leader.

What it’s for

Nylon and fluorocarbon leader and tippet.

Handles the size gaps a normal fly leader throws at it; a heavy-to-thin extreme wants another connection.

Small enough to ride inside a leader. Trim it close.

Not braid-first

For PE main line, use a dedicated braid-to-leader knot.

Both lines lock through one compact crossing instead of opposing coils.

Overlap the leader and tippet, form a loop, and route the working ends through it in the sequence that traps both strands. It closes into one short central lock instead of the Blood Knot’s long double barrel. Finished, there’s barely anything to look at. It’s easy to assume a leader knot needs visible coils before it can be trusted, because a Blood Knot always looks so busy. This one’s small on purpose, and small isn’t the same as weak.

Leave yourself enough line to see each pass

  1. Overlap leader and tippet, leaving enough working length to see each pass.
  2. Form the Orvis Tippet working loop at the overlap.
  3. Route the first working end through the loop in the pattern.
  4. Send the second line through the crossing so both strands sit symmetrically.
  5. Moisten it, then pull both standing lines apart while you guide the knot closed.
  6. Check it seated symmetrically and trim the tags flush.

Wrong opening, and it still looks tied

Start with the opening. A working end sent through the wrong one will cinch up anyway and give you no obvious sign, so rule that out first. The rest are easier to spot: fluorocarbon drawn down dry, a leader and tippet too far apart in diameter to begin with, or one tag pulled hard before both strands had lined up. Moisten it before you close it. The route through this crossing is short and specific, so the first few will seat crooked. Snip them out and tie another — that part never really stops happening, even once you’ve tied a hundred of these.

Faster than winding a Blood Knot

Use: fly leader-to-tippet in mono or fluoro. Skip: braid main line. Compare: Blood for clean matched diameters — still what I tie when I’ve got the time and want that visible security; Surgeon’s for the easiest field tie; J Knot for another alternating-pass structure.

HOW I CHECK IT

Watch the hand path first. Then check it with your own hands, not your eyes.

All of that shows you where the tag goes. None of it tells you whether yours seated. For that I run the finished knot between two fingers — it should feel like one small, even lump, not a lump with a kink on one side. One naming trap worth knowing: the Orvis Tippet Knot joins tippet to leader, while the Orvis Knot is a different knot entirely, tied at the fly.

THE SIX-MOVE CHECK

Job → Material → Route → Dress → Seat → Test

  1. Job. Name what the connection has to do before choosing the knot.
  2. Material. Confirm the line, leader, rope, wire, and hardware actually suit this structure.
  3. Route. Trace every pass before tightening anything.
  4. Dress. Put strands, wraps, and loops in their intended order with no accidental crossings.
  5. Seat. Tighten in the order this knot needs. More force does not repair bad geometry.
  6. Test. Inspect the finished shape, load it by hand when appropriate, and retie if anything moves or fails the article-specific checks.

Practice / pass test. Tie this knot three clean times without rushing. A tie passes only when it matches this article’s What to check before you trust it geometry, shows none of the listed failure clues, and survives the stated load/inspection test. If you cannot tell why one attempt is better than another, keep practicing—the lesson is recognition, not memorization.

KNOT SPEC

Orvis Tippet Knot — the short answers

ALSO CALLED
No widely used alternative name. It is associated with Orvis, who teach it as an easier stand-in for the blood knot. Do not confuse it with the Orvis Knot, which is a terminal knot tied at the fly.
KNOT TYPE
Line-to-line bend — a short symmetrical crossing, not a coiled barrel
WHAT IT CONNECTS
Leader to tippet, and any nylon or fluorocarbon join inside a fly leader. Not for hardware, not for fly line, and not the knot for a braided main line.
LINE TYPES
Nylon and fluorocarbon, including the two mixed. It has no grip on braid, which is too slick and too limp for a short lock like this, and it is not a fly line knot.
STRENGTH BAND
Solid. Comparable to a well-tied blood knot across normal leader steps, and more consistent than one in a hurry, because there is no wrap count to miscount. It falls away at extreme diameter gaps like every knot of this family.
DIFFICULTY
Intermediate. The hand path is short but specific, and a working end through the wrong opening still cinches down and looks tied. Learn it at home, in daylight, before you need it.
STEPS AND WRAPS
Six moves and no wrap count. Two passes through the same crossing, and the sequence — not a number of turns — is what you have to get right. Nothing changes for braid, because it is not a braid knot.
TIE TIME
Roughly a boat knot. Twenty-five to forty seconds once the route is in your hands, which is markedly quicker than winding two barrels for a blood knot.
POOR CONDITIONS
Middling. It needs less dexterity than a blood knot but more attention than a surgeon’s, because you have to see which opening you are going through. In real dark, a surgeon’s is the safer choice.
THROUGH THE GUIDES
Compact and in-line. It is one of the better line-to-line knots to have riding inside a leader that shoots through the guides, and it does not hinge the way an off-axis knot does.
LUBRICATION
Yes. Wet the whole crossing before you close it. Fluorocarbon is the one that punishes a dry pull hardest here, because the lock is short and all the friction happens in one small place.
TAG END
Trim close, a sixteenth of an inch or so. There is no braid case to allow for. Leave the tags a touch longer while you learn, so you can see whether both strands moved when you seated it.
TOOLS
None. Nippers to trim. Reading glasses do more for this knot than any tool, because the failure mode is visual.
BEST SUITED TO
Not species-specific — chosen by the tackle. It belongs to fly leader work: trout, grayling, and light saltwater leaders where guide passage and turnover matter more than raw bulk.

The strength bands are rough on purpose. Published knot tests don’t agree with each other — the same braid-to-leader knot has tested near ninety percent of line strength on one machine and under half on another, because the line brand, its diameter, how fast it got cinched, whether it was wet and whose hands tied it all move the number more than the knot does. Use the band to compare this knot with the others, not as a number to quote.

FIELD INTELLIGENCE

Where it earns its place, and where it costs you

Advantages

  • Compact and in-line, so it rides through the guides and does not hinge the leader at the join.
  • No wrap count to remember, which removes the blood knot’s most common mistake.
  • Noticeably faster to tie than a blood knot for a similar finished profile.
  • Handles the diameter steps a normal fly leader throws at it — comfortably a couple of tippet X sizes, which covers most tapered-leader work.
  • Neat enough that a small dry fly is not dragged around by the join.

Disadvantages

  • The route is specific, and a strand through the wrong opening still tightens into something that looks like a finished knot.
  • Less forgiving than a surgeon’s once light is poor or hands are cold.
  • Not a wide-mismatch knot: past roughly three X sizes, or a heavy butt to fine tippet, you are asking too much of a short lock.
  • Nothing to offer on braid, so it is a fly-leader knot and nothing else.
  • Small enough that a badly seated one is genuinely hard to see.

Use a different knot when

  • Double Surgeon’s Knot — when your hands are cold or the light is gone, and you need a knot with no route to get wrong
  • Blood Knot — when the diameters are close and you want the traditional, slimmest barrel join in a hand-built leader
  • J Knot — when you want a similarly compact alternating-pass knot and prefer its hand path
  • FG, Alberto or Albright — when one side is braid or a much heavier shock leader

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU TRUST IT

This is the knot for building or repairing a tapered leader when the light is going but not gone. It is close to a blood knot in profile and well ahead of it in speed, and it takes the ordinary steps of a fly leader — a couple of tippet sizes at a time — without complaint. Push it to a heavy butt against fine tippet and the short lock cannot spread the load, so it seats crooked. Run the finished knot between finger and thumb: one small even lump is what you want. A lump with a kink standing off one side suggests a strand took the wrong opening, and that one gets cut out.

What actually makes it fail

  • A working end routed through the wrong opening, which cinches up anyway and gives no obvious warning.
  • Closing it dry, which concentrates all the friction in one short lock — worst in fluorocarbon.
  • Pulling one tag hard before both strands have lined up, so the knot sets half formed.
  • Too wide a diameter gap for a short lock to spread, leaving one strand carrying the load alone.
  • Trimming flush before checking, so a lopsided seat gets fished instead of retied.

How to test it, and how it ages

Wet it, then pull the two standing lines apart slowly and watch the knot draw down — it should shrink evenly from both sides rather than one strand sliding in first. Then feel it: a good one is a single short, even lump with leader and tippet leaving from opposite ends and no kink standing off to the side. Finish with a steady hard pull between two hands, held for a couple of seconds. Any creep at all and it goes. Do this before you trim, while there is still tag to tell you which strand moved.

Over a session: Stable over a session and it does not creep once seated. Its real enemy is abrasion rather than loosening, so inspect it after any contact with rock, weed or a fish’s teeth, and retie whenever the tippet below it has been shortened twice.

Troubleshooting

Why does it seat lopsided even though I followed the steps?

Almost certainly a working end went through the wrong opening. Take the tags a little longer while you learn, seat it slowly, and watch whether both strands move together.

Why does it keep breaking on fluorocarbon?

Dry cinching. This lock is short, so all the heat lands in one place. Wet the whole crossing and draw it down slowly.

Can I use it to join braid to a leader?

No. It has nothing to grip on braid. Use an FG or an Alberto for that job.

How far apart can the two diameters be?

It is happy across the steps in a normal tapered leader, roughly two tippet X sizes and often three. A heavy butt straight to fine tippet is too much — step it down or use a different structure.

Is this the same as the Orvis Knot?

No, and this catches people out. The Orvis Tippet Knot joins two lines; the Orvis Knot is tied at the fly.
