Two loops sitting side by side as a matched pair and two loops cinched into a lark’s head feel about the same in cold hands on a windy bank. They don’t look the same, though, and looking is the part that gets skipped. Loop-to-loop isn’t a single knot. It’s a way of interlocking two loops you’ve already tied, usually a factory fly-line loop and a Perfection or Surgeon’s End Loop in the leader. What it buys you is the ability to swap leaders without cutting either loop off.

What it actually does
Joins a fly-line loop to a leader loop, or any two-loop system where both loops are rated for the load.

Two sound, correctly formed loops. Check the factory one for cracked coating before you trust it — that’s the loop most people never look at closely.

Correct loop-to-loop spreads the bend across both loops
One loop passes through the other, then the free end of the second component goes back through its own loop. Pull them apart and you should see two matched U-shapes leaning against each other. If one loop has cinched down around the other like a lark’s head, you’ve built a girth hitch instead, and the load is squeezing one spot on the other loop rather than riding across the bend. The sneaky part is that it usually still holds, so nothing tells you.
Inspect first, then interlock
- Inspect both loops for coating damage, abrasion, and sound knots or splices.
- Pass the leader loop through the fly-line loop.
- Pass the entire leader, tippet end and all, through the leader’s own loop.
- Pull line and leader apart so the two loops interlock as matching U-shapes.
- Confirm the loops haven’t flipped into a girth hitch.
Failure clue
A damaged factory loop will let go whether or not you interlocked it correctly, which is why step one is looking at it. An oversized leader loop is the next thing to check. Then the girth-hitch assembly, which at least announces itself once you know to look, because a girth hitch looks nothing like two matched loops side by side. Loop-to-Loop Connection — the short answers
- ALSO CALLED
- Interlocked loops, loop-to-loop splice. In rigging language the correct form is a square interlock; the wrong form is a girth hitch, and both names are worth knowing because the difference is the whole subject.
- KNOT TYPE
- Two finished loops, interlocked with each other. No knot involved at this join.
- WHAT IT CONNECTS
- Fly line to leader, leader to tippet section, and fly line to backing when both carry loops. It joins loops; it does not create one, so it depends entirely on the two knots or splices that made them.
- LINE TYPES
- Anything that will hold a loop: coated fly line, mono and fluorocarbon leader, dacron backing, braid with a spliced loop. The one pairing to watch is a thin hard mono loop bearing on a soft fly-line loop, where the mono can saw.
- STRENGTH BAND
- Not a strength knot — structural and holding. It is worth exactly what the weaker of the two loops is worth, and a correct interlock does not add strength so much as avoid throwing strength away.

- The bulkiest of the fly-line-to-leader options. It ticks through the guides and knocks on the tip ring, which matters when you are fishing a long leader in and out. Keeping both loops small is most of the fix.
- LUBRICATION
- The join itself never needs wetting, since nothing there slides against anything else. That job belongs to the two loop knots when you tie them — skip it entirely if your loops came pre-formed.
- TAG END
- None at the connection. The tags belong to the loop knots either side, and both should be trimmed flush, because a proud tag on a leader loop is what catches in a small guide during a fast retrieve.
- TOOLS
- None. Nippers for the loop knots themselves. A loop of backing or a spare leader in your pocket does more for you here than any tool.
- BEST SUITED TO
- How often you swap leaders decides this, not the species on the other end. Standard in trout and saltwater fly systems, in Spey and shooting-head setups, and anywhere a rig changes styles mid-day.
The strength bands are rough on purpose. Published knot tests don’t agree with each other — the same braid-to-leader knot has tested near ninety percent of line strength on one machine and under half on another, because the line brand, its diameter, how fast it got cinched, whether it was wet and whose hands tied it all move the number more than the knot does. Use the band to compare this knot with the others, not as a number to quote.

Advantages

Disadvantages
- Bulkier than a nail or needle knot, so it knocks through the guides and can catch weed.
- It can hinge at the join, which softens turnover on a delicate presentation.
- It is only as good as the two loops, and the factory fly-line loop is the one nobody inspects.
- The girth-hitch mistake is easy to make, holds well enough to hide, and quietly concentrates the load.
- An oversized leader loop can slip over the fly-line loop’s knot instead of seating on the bend.
Use a different knot when
- Nail Knot or Knot Tyer Nail Knot — when you want a permanent, low-profile front end and do not change leaders often. That last clause is doing most of the work, and it is really a question about how you fish, not about the knot.
- Needle Knot — when you want the smoothest possible transition and the line will take a needle

The whole value here is orientation. Done right, the two loops interlock square: each passes through the other and they meet as two matched U-shapes leaning together, so the load spreads across both bends. Done wrong, one loop cinches around the standing part of the other in a girth hitch, and the load squeezes a single point — which on a thin hard leader loop bearing against a soft coated fly-line loop is a saw, not a knot. How to test it, and how it ages
This is the one connection you check with your eyes at arm’s length rather than by feel. Pull line and leader gently apart and look at the shape: two matched U-shapes meeting square, neither loop wrapped around the side of the other. If one has cinched down into a hitch, push them back together, undo it and reassemble. Then run a fingertip over both loop knots and the fly-line loop coating for cracks or lifted material, and finish with a steady pull. Make the look a habit; it is the only check that catches the real fault.
Over a session: It holds up well over a session but wears at the two bearing points, where the loops rub each other every cast. Break it apart and look at those contact points every few trips, and replace the leader loop as soon as it shows flattening or whitening.
