TRIPLE-EYE · LIGHT LINE
Put a Jansik Special on a hook whose eye is a size too small and the line crimps instead of sliding, and it’s easy to blame your fingers for a good while before you think to blame the wire. Three eye passes spread the bend before a compact double-loop lock closes behind the hardware — that’s a lot to ask of one small piece of wire, and the eye has to take all three strands without scraping any of them. Check the eye before you pick the knot, not after.

Three strands against the wire
There’s no long barrel here. Repeated passes through the eye put several line segments against the hardware, and then the tag runs through both working loops to lock that geometry down. It finishes compact. But that only happens when the eye is large enough to take all three strands in the first place, and that’s exactly the check that gets skipped when you’re in a hurry.
Three strands, two loops, one tag through both
- Pass line through the eye three times, leaving two working loops behind the eye.
- Keep all eye strands parallel rather than twisted.
- Bring the tag around the standing line and through both working loops in the documented direction.
- Moisten nylon/fluoro and close the loops gradually.
- Pull standing line and tag until the structure seats compactly at the eye; test before trim.
Count to three
Eye crowding, crossed strands inside the eye, a tag that misses one of the two loops, or a heavy stiff leader that won’t close the compact lock cleanly. I count the strands through the eye before I start pulling anything tight. Three of them, lying flat, all running the same way. If I can’t tell at a glance, I slow down until I can.
Under about twenty pounds, and not on braid
Use: light mono/fluoro with a roomy eye. Skip: braid, tiny eyes, heavy stiff leader. Compare: Trilene for double-eye contact; Eye Crosser for all three main line types; Orvis for a simpler fly/tippet terminal knot.
How I check it

- Job. Name what the connection has to do before choosing the knot.
- Material. Confirm the line, leader, rope, wire, and hardware actually suit this structure.
- Route. Trace every pass before tightening anything.
- Dress. Put strands, wraps, and loops in their intended order with no accidental crossings.
- Seat. Tighten in the order this knot needs. More force does not repair bad geometry.
- Test. Inspect the finished shape, load it by hand when appropriate, and retie if anything moves or fails the article-specific checks.

Jansik Special — the short answers
- ALSO CALLED
- Jansik Special. Usually credited to Vic Jansik, though the attribution rests on knot-book tradition rather than a documented record. No regional aliases. A minor knot now, kept alive by knot references more than by working anglers.
- KNOT TYPE
- Terminal knot, three passes through the eye locked by a double loop
- WHAT IT CONNECTS
- Light line to hook, lure, swivel or snap. Not a line-to-line knot, not a loop knot, and not a connection for heavy stiff leader or braid.
- LINE TYPES
- Light nylon and fluorocarbon, commonly quoted up to about twenty-pound class. Not for braid, which is too slick for this geometry. Not for wire. Heavy stiff leader will not close the lock cleanly.
- STRENGTH BAND
- Solid on light mono when the eye is roomy and the strands stay flat, but the evidence is thin. Its strong reputation comes largely from older knot books rather than from modern independent testing, so do not treat it as a proven best choice.
- DIFFICULTY
- Intermediate. Three passes through one eye and a tag through two loops is more line management than most terminal knots ask for, and keeping the strands uncrossed is fiddly with anything but big eyes.
- STEPS AND WRAPS
- Five moves and a real structural count: three passes through the eye leaving two working loops, then the tag around the standing line and through both loops. No braid variant, because braid is the wrong material for it.
- TIE TIME
- Slow for a terminal knot. Forty-five seconds or more, most of it spent threading the eye three times and keeping the strands parallel. A home knot rather than a bite-window knot.
- POOR CONDITIONS
- Poor in cold hands, wind and low light. Threading a small eye three times without crossing anything is the hardest thing in this entry to do badly-lit on a moving boat.
- THROUGH THE GUIDES
- Compact once seated — there is no long barrel, just a short lock behind the eye — so it clears guides well. The bulk that matters is inside the eye, not outside it.
- LUBRICATION
- Yes, and close the loops gradually rather than in one pull. Three strands moving against wire and against each other generate exactly the friction that damages fluorocarbon when it is cinched dry.
- TAG END
- Leave enough to run comfortably through both loops, then trim close after testing. If the line looks flattened or crimped anywhere near the eye, the tag length is not the problem — the eye was too small.
- TOOLS
- None required. Nippers to trim. A hook with a genuinely roomy eye does more for this knot than any tool, so check the eye before you commit to the knot.
- BEST SUITED TO
- Light freshwater and light inshore work — trout, panfish, bass, small saltwater species on mono or fluoro. Chosen by line class and eye size rather than by species.
The strength bands are rough on purpose. Published knot tests don’t agree with each other — the same braid-to-leader knot has tested near ninety percent of line strength on one machine and under half on another, because the line brand, its diameter, how fast it got cinched, whether it was wet and whose hands tied it all move the number more than the knot does. Use the band to compare this knot with the others, not as a number to quote.

Where it earns its place, and where it costs you
Advantages
- Three passes spread the bend across several strands instead of loading one strand at the wire.
- Finishes compact, with a short lock behind the eye rather than a long barrel down the line.
- Extra contact inside the eye can help on light line against a rough or thin wire eye.
- The failure signs are visible — crossed strands or flattened line are easy to see before you fish it.
Disadvantages
- Thin modern evidence base; its reputation is largely inherited from older knot literature.
- Needs an eye large enough for three strands, which rules out many small hooks and flies.
- Slow to tie and awkward to manage compared with a Palomar, Trilene or Orvis.
- Strands cross inside the eye easily, and a crossed strand grinds instead of sharing load.
- No braid use and no heavy-leader use, so its working window is narrow.
Use a different knot when
- Trilene Knot — when you want double contact through the eye with far less fuss and a much better track record
- Palomar — when you are on braid, or you want the fastest reliable terminal knot on the boat
- Orvis Knot — when the eye is small, or you are on fly tippet and need a compact knot
- Improved Clinch — when the eye will only take a single pass and simplicity matters more than eye contact
WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU TRUST IT
The honest summary is that the Jansik Special is a curiosity kept alive by knot charts. The idea behind it is sound — three passes through the eye spread the bend so no single strand takes the whole load at the wire — and on light mono with a roomy eye it ties into a neat, compact connection. The useful caution is the cost: three trips through one small eye is slow, awkward work, and the Trilene delivers most of the same idea in a fraction of the time. There is also very little modern testing behind it. Know it; do not build a tackle box around it.
What actually makes it fail
- An eye too small for three strands, so the line crowds, crimps and flattens against the wire.
- Strands crossing inside the eye instead of lying parallel, which puts the load on one strand grinding across another.
- The tag missing one of the two working loops, leaving the lock half formed.
- Heavy or stiff leader that will not close the compact lock properly.
- Closing the loops in one hard dry pull, which cooks fluorocarbon where the strands cross.
How to test it, and how it ages
Before you tighten anything, count the strands through the eye: three, lying flat, all running the same way. Then wet it and close the loops gradually, drawing the standing line and tag together rather than one ahead of the other. Inspect: a compact lock right behind the eye, no crossed strands, and no flattening or crimping in the line where it passes the wire. Finish with a firm steady pull along the standing line. Any crimped or shiny flat spot at the eye means the eye was too small — cut it off and use a different knot.
Over a session: Holds up reasonably over a session on light line, but the three strands inside the eye keep working against the wire, so it deserves a look after every fish. Any rough or worn eye will polish and flatten line faster here than with a single-pass knot.
Troubleshooting
Why does the line keep crimping at the eye?
The eye is too small for three passes. That is a hook problem, not a tying problem — switch to a Trilene or a clinch.
Why does it fail even when it looks tidy?
Check for crossed strands inside the eye. Crossed strands grind against each other under load instead of sharing it.
Is it really as strong as the old books say?
Treat those claims carefully. There is very little modern independent testing behind this knot, and its reputation is largely inherited.
Can I tie it on braid?
No. It relies on friction that slick braid does not provide. Use a Palomar or another braid-specific knot.
Is it worth learning at all?
Only if you like it. The Trilene covers most of the same ground faster, and the Palomar covers more of it with fewer ways to go wrong.
