Cross the tag on the wrong side and Jack’s Knot still looks finished. It isn’t the same structure anymore, and nothing about it says so — you only catch it by holding the shape up against a reference before you trim. The appeal is size. A short crossing-and-return path replaces the long barrel of wraps, so the knot sits tiny at the eye. The route just looks simpler than it is.

Fewer turns, so the crossing carries it
There aren’t many turns here to spread the load, so the tag’s crossing order and return path are what define the lock. Everything else is threading and seating. It’s a knot for when mass at the eye really matters, and the trade is that you have to read the finished shape plainly before you trim the tag.
Five moves and it’s finished
- Pass tippet through the fly eye and leave enough tag to see the crossing clearly.
- Cross the tag over the standing tippet to form the small working loop described by the knot.
- Route the tag through the crossing/loop in the documented direction rather than improvising a second turn.
- Wet nylon/fluoro as appropriate and pull the tag enough to organize the lock.
- Draw the standing tippet until the compact knot seats against the eye; pull-test and trim.
Where I still watch myself
Crossing reversed, tag exiting the wrong side, the knot pulled tight before the structure has organized itself, or tippet and hook scale too large for geometry this small. If it’s been a while since you tied one, leave a long tag. Then there’s something to look at, and you can see what the crossing is doing instead of guessing.
Use
Fly tippet when a compact terminal knot is the goal and you can tie the crossing consistently.
Skip
Braid, heavy conventional tackle, or any situation where a Davy/Orvis/Clinch is easier for you to inspect and repeat.

Davy: similarly tiny but different lock. Orvis: slightly more structure and broad fly use. Pitzen: compact terminal knot with a more obvious coil path.
How I check it

THE SIX-MOVE CHECK

- Job. Name what the connection has to do before choosing the knot.
- Material. Confirm the line, leader, rope, wire, and hardware actually suit this structure.
- Route. Trace every pass before tightening anything.
- Dress. Put strands, wraps, and loops in their intended order with no accidental crossings.
- Seat. Tighten in the order this knot needs. More force does not repair bad geometry.
- Test. Inspect the finished shape, load it by hand when appropriate, and retie if anything moves or fails the article-specific checks.

Jack’s Knot — the short answers
- ALSO CALLED
- Jack’s Knot. No widely used alternative name, and no reliable attribution — it appears on knot references without a documented origin. A minor knot with a thin published record, used by a small number of fly anglers who like its footprint.
- KNOT TYPE
- Terminal fly knot, single crossing with a return pass
- WHAT IT CONNECTS
- Tippet to fly, where a small knot at the eye is the goal. Not a line-to-line knot, not a loop knot, and not a hardware or heavy-tackle connection.
- LINE TYPES
- Nylon and fluorocarbon fly tippet. There is no braid testing behind it and no reason to expect a knot with this little internal grip to hold on braid. Not for wire, not tied in fly line.
- STRENGTH BAND
- Variable — technique dominates. There is very little independent testing behind this knot, so treat any confident claim about it with suspicion. Tied consistently it seems adequate on light tippet; tied with the crossing reversed it is a different structure entirely.
- DIFFICULTY
- Intermediate, and deceptively so. Only a few moves, but the crossing side and return direction define the knot, and reversing either produces something that still looks tied. Not a knot to learn on the water.
- STEPS AND WRAPS
- Four to five moves, no wrap count. Thread the eye, cross the tag over the standing tippet, return the tag through that crossing in the documented direction, organize with the tag, seat with the standing line.
- TIE TIME
- Fast once the crossing is automatic — fifteen seconds or so. Before then it is a bench knot, because the failure mode is invisible and you will not catch it in a hurry.
- POOR CONDITIONS
- Poor in low light and cold hands, for the same reason it is quick when it goes well: the whole knot is one small crossing you have to see rather than feel. Wind and current are irrelevant.
- THROUGH THE GUIDES
- Very small at the eye, comparable with the Davy. It clears guides easily and adds almost no visible mass ahead of the fly.
- LUBRICATION
- Yes. Wet before the seating pull. With few turns to spread the load, the crossing itself takes most of it, and that is exactly the place a dry cinch does its damage.
- TAG END
- Leave a long tag while you learn it — three inches or more — so you can actually read what the crossing did. Trim close only after a pull test. No braid variant to give.
- TOOLS
- None. Nippers to trim. A magnifier, or a zoomed phone camera, is genuinely useful for grading a knot this small at the vise.
- BEST SUITED TO
- Trout, grayling and panfish on light fly tackle. Not species-specific — chosen by anglers who want a minimal knot at the eye and are willing to tie it carefully.
The strength bands are rough on purpose. Published knot tests don’t agree with each other — the same braid-to-leader knot has tested near ninety percent of line strength on one machine and under half on another, because the line brand, its diameter, how fast it got cinched, whether it was wet and whose hands tied it all move the number more than the knot does. Use the band to compare this knot with the others, not as a number to quote.
FIELD INTELLIGENCE
Where it earns its place, and where it costs you
Advantages
- Very small footprint at the fly eye, so the knot does not sit ahead of a small pattern.
- Few moves, so once it is learned it is quick.
- The finished shape is readable — a good one sits centered, a bad one is visibly lopsided.
- Uses very little tippet per tie, which matters over a day of fly changes.
Disadvantages
- Thin evidence base. It has not been tested or written about the way the mainstream fly knots have.
- The crossing can reverse and produce a different, weaker structure that looks broadly the same.
- Few turns means little redundancy — the crossing is carrying nearly everything.
- No braid or heavy-tackle use, so it does not travel outside fly tippet.
- Nothing it does is not already done more reliably by the Davy or the Orvis, which have far more behind them.
Use a different knot when
- Davy or Double Davy — when you want the same minimal footprint with a far better documented track record
- Orvis Knot — when you want one compact knot that covers the whole tippet range and is widely tested
- Improved Clinch — when you would rather have the most familiar knot in fly fishing and can accept the bulk
- Pitzen Knot — when you want a compact light-line knot with a clearer seating signal
WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU TRUST IT
Be honest about this one: Jack’s Knot is minor. It does not appear in the tested literature the way the clinch, the Orvis or even the Davy does, and there is no reliable account of where it came from. What it offers is a very small knot at the eye from a single crossing and one return. If you tie it consistently it holds on light tippet, and the finished shape is easy to grade — centered good, twisted bad. The useful caution is the thin evidence base, and most default to a Davy or an Orvis instead. That is a reasonable choice, not a snub.
What actually makes it fail
- The tag crossing on the wrong side, which builds a different structure that looks close to correct.
- The tag returning through the crossing the wrong way, with the same invisible result.
- Pulling it tight before the lock has organized, so the crossing closes half formed.
- Tippet and hook scale too large for a knot this small to hold.
- Cinching dry, which is punished hard when so few turns are sharing the load.
How to test it, and how it ages
Wet it, pull the tag first until the crossing organizes, then draw the standing tippet to seat it against the eye. Look closely, with magnification if you have it: a good one is a small centered lock with no open loop beside the eye and the tag leaving on the same path the reference diagram shows. Then load it with a firm steady pull along the tippet before it goes near a fish. Because the bad version looks so similar to the good one, this pull test is not optional here the way it might feel elsewhere.
Over a session: Stable enough over a session once properly seated, with little in it to work loose. Given how little is known about it, retie more freely than you would a clinch or an Orvis rather than trusting one knot all day.
Troubleshooting
How do I know I tied the right knot?
Compare the finished shape against a reference diagram before you trim. Reversing the crossing gives a different structure that still looks tied.
Why does it keep coming out twisted?
The tag crossed on the wrong side. Give yourself a long tag and watch the crossing rather than working by feel.
Is it stronger than a Davy?
Nobody can honestly tell you. There is very little testing behind this knot, which is a good reason to prefer a knot that has some.
Can I use it on braid?
There is no braid evidence for it and very little grip in the structure. Use a Palomar or another braid knot.
Why does it fail on bigger flies?
Too little structure for the load. Move to an Orvis or a clinch as hook and tippet size climb.
