How to Tie the Eye Crosser Knot: Plan B for Braid

The Eye Crosser runs braid through the eye twice before the tag locks it down. It’s for hardware a Palomar won’t work with, and the first check happens before any line goes in.

I trust a Palomar the way I trust my truck starting in the morning — it’s the default, and I don’t think much about it. The Eye Crosser is for braid when the Palomar won’t work with the hardware, or when I want a second strand in the eye without needing room to pass a whole loop over the lure. The line goes through the eye twice before the tag builds the lock — that’s the name, and it’s also the point. Doubled eye contact spreads load and gives slick braid more to bite against than a one-pass terminal knot does.

What it’s for

Monofilament, fluorocarbon, and braid; Take Me Fishing describes it as usable with any type and weight of line.

Eye-size limit

The eye has to take the line twice without crushing or scraping it. Hold a doubled strand against the hardware before you commit to the knot.

What it’s best for

Braid on hardware where a Palomar’s doubled loop won’t pass through the eye — that gap is the specific job this knot fills for me, not a general upgrade over what I already trust.

Two strands in the eye, not one

The standing line and the tag share the hardware before the tag crosses and locks around the standing section. That second pass does different work depending on what you’re tying. Braid gets friction it badly needs. Mono and fluoro get the bend spread across two strands instead of one. The cost shows up on small hardware, where a second pass either won’t fit at all or scrapes the line on its way through — which is the first thing I check, before I’ve committed any line to the knot.

Thread it twice before you cross anything

  1. Pass line through the terminal eye and leave a long working tag.
  2. Bring the tag back through the eye so two parallel strands occupy it.
  3. Cross the tag behind the standing line and doubled eye section.
  4. Form the locking turn exactly as the reference path shows, keeping the doubled strands parallel.
  5. Moisten nylon/fluoro as appropriate and pull both sides steadily until the knot is compact against the eye.
  6. Pull-test hard before trimming, especially with braid.

When the second strand won’t behave

Eye too small for two passes, the doubled strands crossing inside the eye, braid that never fully set, or a tag exiting on the wrong side of the lock. Threading that second pass with cold hands takes a few attempts, and that isn’t a sign of anything. It’s the eye.

Use it

When doubled eye contact is useful and the hardware has room for it, across mono, fluoro, or braid.

Skip it

Tiny fly eyes, doubled line that crowds the eye, or rigs where a simpler Palomar/Uni already fits cleanly — which is most of my rigs, honestly. This one’s for the exceptions.

HOW I CHECK IT

Check the eye before you check the knot.

My own habit starts before the knot exists: hold a doubled strand of whatever I’m tying against the actual eye and see if it sits clean or fights for room. If it fights, I go back to a Palomar or find different hardware. Once it’s tied, the pull test tells the rest — especially on braid, where a knot that looks fine can still creep under load.

THE SIX-MOVE CHECK

Job → Material → Route → Dress → Seat → Test

  1. Job. Name what the connection has to do before choosing the knot.
  2. Material. Confirm the line, leader, rope, wire, and hardware actually suit this structure.
  3. Route. Trace every pass before tightening anything.
  4. Dress. Put strands, wraps, and loops in their intended order with no accidental crossings.
  5. Seat. Tighten in the order this knot needs. More force does not repair bad geometry.
  6. Test. Inspect the finished shape, load it by hand when appropriate, and retie if anything moves or fails the article-specific checks.

Practice / pass test. Tie this knot three clean times without rushing. A tie passes only when it matches this article’s What to check before you trust it geometry, shows none of the listed failure clues, and survives the stated load/inspection test. If you cannot tell why one attempt is better than another, keep practicing—the lesson is recognition, not memorization.

Eye Crosser Knot — the short answers

ALSO CALLED
The Eye Crosser. No widely used alternative name and no regional variants worth reporting. It appears in a handful of knot references but is uncommon in everyday guide and tournament use.
KNOT TYPE
Terminal knot — two passes through the eye finished with a crossing lock around the standing line
WHAT IT CONNECTS
Line to hook, lure, swivel or snap, where you want two strands sharing the eye. It is not a line-to-line knot and not a loop knot — it seats tight against the hardware.
LINE TYPES
Mono, fluorocarbon and braid. Braid is where the second pass earns most, because slick line gets friction it needs. Small eyes are where it fails on any material, as the second pass crowds or scrapes the first.
STRENGTH BAND
Solid. Doubled eye contact puts it above a single-pass wrapped knot on braid, but it is far less tested and less widely fished than the Palomar it stands in for. Treat it as a capable alternative, not an upgrade.
DIFFICULTY
Intermediate. The moves are ordinary; the fiddly part is threading a second pass through a small eye with cold hands. Children can learn it, and they will learn it faster on generous hardware.
STEPS AND WRAPS
Six moves. Two passes through the eye, then a crossing turn and a lock — no long wrap count to remember. Braid asks for a slower, firmer set rather than any extra turns.
TIE TIME
Middling. Thirty to sixty seconds, most of it spent on the second pass through the eye. Slower than a Palomar on friendly hardware, quicker than fighting a Palomar loop that will not fit.
POOR CONDITIONS
Mixed. No count to lose, which helps in cold and low light, but threading an eye twice is exactly the job numb fingers make hard. Larger hardware makes it far more forgiving than small.
THROUGH THE GUIDES
Compact once seated, so it clears rod guides without fuss. It sits at the hardware, though, so guide passage rarely arises in practice.
LUBRICATION
Yes on mono and fluorocarbon — wet it before the final pull. Two strands moving through one eye generate real friction in a confined space, and fluorocarbon in particular is damaged by a dry cinch there.
TAG END
Trim close, roughly an eighth of an inch, and a fraction more on braid, which creeps. Check the tag exits on the correct side of the lock before you trim; a tag on the wrong side means retie, not adjust.
TOOLS
None. Nippers to trim. A hook eye that is genuinely big enough for two passes is worth more here than any tool you could carry.
BEST SUITED TO
Not species-specific — chosen by hardware. It suits braid on hooks, jigs and snaps with generous eyes, and inshore or freshwater work where you want doubled eye contact without feeding a lure through a loop.

The strength bands are rough on purpose. Published knot tests don’t agree with each other — the same braid-to-leader knot has tested near ninety percent of line strength on one machine and under half on another, because the line brand, its diameter, how fast it got cinched, whether it was wet and whose hands tied it all move the number more than the knot does. Read the band as where this knot sits next to its neighbors, not as a figure to quote.

FIELD INTELLIGENCE

Where it earns its place, and where it costs you

Advantages

  • Two strands share the eye, so no single strand takes the bend against metal on its own.
  • Gives slick braid more structure to grip than a single-pass wrapped terminal knot offers.
  • Nothing has to be fed through a loop, so it works where a Palomar will not pass the hardware.
  • No long wrap count, so a cold, rushed tie still comes out as the knot you meant to tie.

Disadvantages

  • It needs an eye that takes the line twice cleanly. On small hardware the second pass crowds, scrapes, or simply will not go.
  • Far less common and less thoroughly tested than the knots it substitutes for, so there is less collective experience behind it.
  • Threading the eye twice is the slow part, and it is slowest exactly when your hands are coldest.
  • The doubled strands can cross inside the eye where you cannot easily see them.
  • It cinches tight to the eye, which kills the free swing on a lure that wants one.

Use a different knot when

  • Palomar Knot — when the lure or hardware will pass through a doubled loop — it is the better known and better tested default
  • Trilene Knot — when you are on mono or fluorocarbon and want a double eye pass finished with wraps
  • Non-Slip Loop Knot — when the lure needs free movement rather than being locked hard against the eye
  • Uni / Grinner — when the eye is simply too small to take the line twice

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU TRUST IT

The Eye Crosser fills one specific gap: braid on hardware with an eye too small to pass a Palomar loop but big enough to take the line twice. That is a narrower window than it first sounds. Check the eye before committing any line — hold a doubled strand against the hardware and see whether it sits clean or fights for room. If it fights, the answer is different hardware or a different knot. The tradeoff is familiarity: you give up the deep collective experience behind the Palomar in exchange for a second strand in an eye that would not otherwise get one.

What actually makes it fail

  • An eye too small for two passes, so the strands crush together or saw against each other under load.
  • The doubled strands crossing inside the eye instead of lying parallel through it.
  • Braid that never fully set, then crept the first time it was genuinely loaded.
  • The tag exiting on the wrong side of the lock, leaving the crossing turn unable to close properly.
  • A rough or burred eye, which does twice the damage when two strands are turning through it.

How to test it, and how it ages

Check the eye first, before any line goes into it: hold a doubled strand against the hardware and see whether two passes will sit clean. Then tie, wet it, and draw both sides down steadily until the knot is compact against the eye. Look at the strands in the eye — parallel is good, crossed means cut it off and start again. Then pull-test harder than you would a familiar knot, particularly on braid, watching for the tag to creep. Braid knots that look finished can still move the first time they are truly loaded, and this one will tell you if you ask it to.

Over a session: Stable once properly set, and helped by the load being shared across two strands at the eye rather than one. On braid, check it after any serious fish, since creep shows up here before it shows up anywhere else.

Troubleshooting

Why will the line not go through the eye a second time?

The hardware is too small for this knot. That is the answer rather than a technique problem. Go back to a Palomar or a Uni, or change the hardware.

Why does it creep on braid?

It was never set hard enough. Braid wants a slower, firmer pull to bed down, not extra turns. Load it properly before you trim, then load it once more.

Why do the strands cross inside the eye?

The second pass went in on the wrong side, or picked up a twist on the way through. Feed it deliberately and look into the eye before you tighten anything.

Is this better than a Palomar?

No, and treating it as an upgrade is a mistake. The Palomar is better known and far better tested. This knot exists for eyes a Palomar loop cannot pass.

Why does my fluorocarbon break right at the eye?

Almost certainly a dry cinch. Two strands moving through one eye make serious friction in a tight space. Wet it and pull steadily rather than fast.
