RED DRUM · SPECIES PROFILE
The tail comes up because the head went down.
A redfish tail waving over shallow grass is not the fish showing off. Its mouth points down, and it is rooting crabs, shrimp and other prey out of water shallow enough that the tail has nowhere else to go. That one posture tells you a lot about how to look for the fish.

IDENTIFICATION
The spot is useful. The missing barbels are better.
Most red drum carry at least one black ocellated spot on the upper tail base. Multiple spots are normal. A fish with no spot is possible and rare, which is why spot count is a poor place to build a whole identification.
Black drum are the common confusion. The fastest separator is the chin: black drum have barbels; red drum do not. Juvenile black drum also carry dark vertical bars. Red drum keep the cleaner copper-to-silver body and tail spot pattern.
The tail spot is often described as a predator-deflection mark that may draw attacks away from the head. Agency and museum sources phrase that as a hypothesis, not a demonstrated fact. The fish is interesting enough without turning a plausible explanation into certainty.

THE TAIL
Skinny water turns feeding behavior into something you can see.
Red drum have a downward-facing mouth and spend a lot of time feeding on bottom prey. In shallow grass or marsh water, a fish tipping forward to root crabs and shrimp can push its tail clear of the surface. North Carolina and Texas agency sources both describe this shallow feeding behavior, with Texas putting common feeding water around one to four feet deep along vegetated bay edges.
There is no agency rule saying “a redfish tails at exactly twelve inches.” Body size, posture, wave action and bottom shape make that kind of exact threshold silly. What matters is the relationship: water shallow enough that a bottom-feeding fish has to show part of itself.
That also means a tail is more than a sight-fishing trophy. It tells you the fish is head-down, occupied with the bottom and probably not watching the sky nearly as carefully as you are watching the tail.

INSHORE FIRST, OFFSHORE LATER
A slot red and a bull red are different life stages doing different jobs.
Juvenile and subadult red drum spend their early years inside estuaries: marsh creeks, grass, oyster, mud, channels, river edges, passes and nearby surf. As they mature, they leave much of that shallow nursery life behind and join the adult population in deeper nearshore and offshore water.
That split is the reason modern red-drum management leans so hard on upper slot limits. The fish commonly harvested inshore are mostly immature subadults. The large adults making fall schools around passes and beaches are the spawning stock those rules are trying to let escape into adulthood.
Adults are not necessarily continent-scale wanderers. Tagging shows most younger fish stay close to their home estuary, while a smaller part of the population makes long coastal movements. Florida work also shows adults returning to spawning areas associated with the estuary where they originated. Local water matters even to a fish that can travel hundreds of miles.

FOOD
The marsh version is mostly a crab problem.
South Carolina stomach work found more than 94% of the subadult diet was crustaceans, with fiddler crabs alone making up nearly half. Mud crabs, blue crabs and grass shrimp filled much of the rest. Adults shifted toward more fish, with menhaden and spot becoming important while crabs stayed in the mix.
That makes the shallow-water fishing easier to understand. A redfish pushing onto flooded grass or mud is not randomly visiting the bank. The food is there. A crab, shrimp, small baitfish or lure that behaves like one can make sense because it matches the job, not because somebody declared it the redfish bait of the month.
Season can move the menu. Florida accounts describe more menhaden and anchovies in winter and spring, and more crabs and shrimp in summer and fall. Use that as a starting expectation, then look at what is actually moving through the water.

TIDE HEIGHT IS NOT TIDAL CURRENT
One gets the fish onto the flat. The other moves the groceries.
Tide height is access. Water has to be deep enough for a redfish to physically enter a grass flat, marsh edge or oyster pocket. Too little water and the habitat is dry. More water opens more room.
Tidal current is delivery. It determines how shrimp, small fish, crabs and scent move through cuts, creek mouths, points and oyster edges. A high tide with barely any current is a different fishing situation from the same water level while a pass is moving hard.
Agency sources document daily movement between shallow and deeper water with tide and temperature, but they don’t establish a universal “incoming is best” or “outgoing is best” rule. So ask two separate questions: where the water level lets fish go, and where the moving water carries food.
PRESENTATION
Don’t throw past the fish just because the cast looks better.
Florida’s own angler guidance lists live shrimp under popping corks, soft-plastic jigs, spoons and topwater plugs. Georgia also lists live baitfish, shrimp, crabs, squid and cut bait. That is enough to prove red drum eat a lot of presentations and not enough to choose one for you.
A follow, push, boil or refusal from one edge keeps the water relationship alive. Change angle, depth or speed before you decide the problem was the color name on the package.
WINTER
Cold sends the same fish down, not necessarily away.
Juvenile and subadult red drum can leave shallow creeks for deeper river channels in winter. South Carolina documents fish using channels around 30 to 50 feet deep, and Texas describes winter concentrations in rivers and tidal creeks.
Severe freezes can kill red drum, but the 2021 Texas event showed them substantially less vulnerable than spotted seatrout. That is useful context: cold matters, but the two species do not respond the same way.
On a normal cold day, start by looking for the nearest deeper, more stable water connected to the shallow habitat the fish had been using. You do not need a coastwide migration theory to explain a fish moving from a three-foot flat into a channel.

BULL REDS
The big school in the pass is the part of the population you want back next year.
Mature red drum gather near passes, beaches and nearshore spawning grounds in late summer and fall. Males drum by vibrating specialised sonic muscles against the swim bladder, and spawning activity peaks around dusk.
These fish can fight for a long time, which is fun until “long time” becomes the release problem. Florida handling guidance recommends tackle heavy enough to shorten the fight, wet hands, horizontal support, minimal air exposure and head-first release. A fish too heavy to support properly does not need to be lifted for a better photograph.
The useful mental shift is simple: a bull red is not an oversized version of the inshore slot fish. It is an adult that already made it through the juvenile fishery and into the spawning population. Treating it like the valuable part of the stock isn’t sentiment; the whole management system was built to get fish exactly like this one back into the spawning population.

DEEP REFERENCE
The complicated part can stay complicated without sitting above the fish.
How old can red drum get?
Maximum-age figures vary by region and ageing dataset. Northern fish have produced older ages than southern fish, with assessment sources reaching into the 50s and low 60s in the north and roughly 40 years in Florida and other southern waters. “Several decades” is the field-useful answer; the exact record belongs in the ageing literature.
Are red drum sedentary or migratory?
Both descriptions appear in good sources because life stage matters. Most young fish stay close to their home estuary. Mature fish move farther and form coastal spawning aggregations. A small proportion of tagged fish make very long coastal movements, while most do not.
Did blackened redfish cause the 1980s collapse?
The restaurant craze and offshore purse-seine fishery became the visible symbol of the crisis and helped trigger federal action. Louisiana Sea Grant notes that substantial inshore mortality was already occurring and that recreational harvest made up a large share of total removals. The simple story is memorable; the actual decline had more than one source.
What the profile does not establish
No reliable source in the original research established a universal feeding response to barometric pressure, cloud cover, wind direction or one “best” tide direction. The profile also does not turn the tail-spot predator-deflection hypothesis into fact.
A bull red held horizontal for those extra seconds before release is still a fish capable of showing up in next fall’s spawning run.
