COHO SALMON · SPECIES PROFILE
The white gum line is the fast answer when the fish still looks silver.
The same fish turns into a different angling problem depending on where you meet it: near the ocean surface, stacked in tidewater, pushing into a river on fresh water, then spawning in streams small enough to run behind somebody’s neighborhood. Those don’t fish anything alike, so the first job is knowing which one you’re standing in.

IDENTIFICATION
White gums, upper-tail spots. Use both.
Fresh coho are bright silver with a dark metallic blue-green back. The small black spots sit across the back and on the upper lobe of the tail. The lower lobe is normally clean.
Chinook are the important comparison. Chinook carry black pigment along the lower gum line—the reason for the nickname blackmouth—and usually have spotting on both lobes of the tail. Coho have a pale gum line with darker color inside and outside it, plus the upper-tail-only spotting pattern.
Neither trait should have to carry the whole identification alone on a dark, worn or awkwardly photographed fish. Gum line plus tail pattern is the stronger pair.
As coho move into spawning condition, the silver disappears. Both sexes darken into red-maroon sides with darker backs and heads; males develop a pronounced hooked jaw and larger teeth. Color becomes dramatic precisely when it becomes least useful for comparing a fresh coho with a fresh Chinook.
In Great Lakes water, coho can also overlap rainbow/steelhead and other salmonids. Michigan uses the higher anal-fin ray count—13 or more—as another salmon clue, but for a Pacific salmon identification the gums and tail remain much quicker.

Looking at a worn, spotted fish boatside, I would check the gum line before the tail — a folded or nicked lobe hides the spotting pattern faster than mud ever hides a jaw.
OCEAN FISH
Coho can make the top fifteen feet of the ocean feel much smaller than the ocean is.
Marine coho are active predators on herring, sand lance, anchovies, sardines, juvenile salmon, sablefish and squid. They feed in the upper ocean and can be caught much shallower than anglers new to salmon trolling sometimes expect.
Oregon’s angler guidance tells ocean anglers to troll within about 15 feet of the surface, often at 3–5 mph, with spoons or artificial squid and herring or anchovy behind a dodger or flasher. Alaska lists trolling and mooching as standard saltwater methods.
The exact lure is less important than the vertical point: if the fish and bait are shallow, dropping the whole system fifty feet because salmon “live deep” is solving a different fish.
Birds, bait, surface activity and fleet position can all help locate feeding fish, but the profile does not turn any of them into a guarantee. Coho can move quickly. A group that was under the boat can be several hundred yards away by the time the next lure change is finished.
Great Lakes coho solve a similar open-water food problem without the ocean. Michigan’s fish shift onto alewives and smelt, and the fishery is largely maintained by hatchery stocking rather than a native Pacific life cycle.
TIDEWATER
This is the part of the run where bright fish can stack before they commit to the river.
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife calls estuaries and tidewater places where small-boat anglers can reach ocean-bright fish, often at high density. The fish has left the pure marine phase but has not yet moved far into freshwater.
That makes current and staging depth the immediate variables. A tide can shift a concentration within the estuary without the fish leaving the system. A presentation needs to stay in the moving layer or travel lane rather than simply land where the school was an hour ago.
The source record does not support one universal “incoming coho tide” — tidewater can concentrate fish, tidal flow moves both the fish and the presentation path, and actual fish location ought to outrank a memorised tide slogan every time.
THE RAIN MOVES THE RUN
Fresh water can change the river from waiting room to highway.
Alaska Department of Fish and Game describes coho entering spawning streams from July through November, usually during periods of high runoff. The regional calendar changes dramatically—California can run later, Great Lakes timing is different, Olympic Peninsula fish have their own peak—but the flow relationship travels better than the month.
That is why rain can matter without becoming a mystical bite switch. Rising river flow can cue migration and open water that was previously too shallow or disconnected. The fish may simply not have been in yesterday’s pool.
Once in freshwater, coho use pools, current breaks and softer water while continuing upstream. In high water, bankside and off-channel water can become more important because the old midriver lane may now cost too much energy.
The river presentation therefore starts by asking what the fish is doing: travelling, briefly holding, or stacked below a barrier. A spoon, spinner, jig, fly, bait or drift rig only becomes meaningful after the lane makes sense.
RIVER PRESENTATION
Make the path repeatable enough that one aggressive fish does not teach the wrong lesson.
Coho have a reputation for striking hard and fighting harder. Alaska calls them the most acrobatic of the Pacific salmon. That reputation can make the fishing sound simpler than it is.
Agency guidance includes drift fishing, plunking, spoons, spinners, flies and bait. The useful difference is how each method handles water.
There is a temptation with aggressive fish to treat every strike as proof of the bait. Keep the water attached to the response. A coho that ate at the head of one pool may have said more about the lane than the paint.
THE SMALL STREAM IS THE NURSERY
The adult can cross an ocean and still depend on a creek you could step over.
Coho juveniles stay in freshwater far longer than many other Pacific salmon. They rear for at least one summer and often a full year or more before smolting. That makes small-stream habitat a major part of the population rather than a short passage.
Washington notes that coho can use waterways too small for other salmon and may occur in small neighborhood streams as long as cold, clean, year-round flow remains. Oregon and California descriptions emphasize low-gradient tributaries, side channels, sloughs, pools and large woody debris.
The classic Pacific Northwest habitat work makes the pattern unusually concrete: pools and beaver ponds outperform riffles for juvenile rearing, large wood creates cover and pool structure, and off-channel areas become critical winter refuge when floods hammer the main channel.
This is the part of the species record that changes how I look at “salmon habitat.” The impressive main river is only one piece. A blocked culvert on a little tributary can remove rearing habitat from fish that will later spend years in the North Pacific.

THE TIRE CHEMICAL
A storm can bring the fish into the creek and poison it in the same afternoon.
Coho have one of the strangest urban-run mortality stories in fisheries science. For years, adult fish returning to spawn in Puget Sound urban streams died within hours of autumn storm runoff. In one Seattle creek, pre-spawn mortality repeatedly reached 60–100% of the returning run, with affected females often dying before releasing their eggs.
The unknown contaminant was eventually identified as 6PPD-quinone, a transformation product of 6PPD, the antiozonant used in vehicle tires. Tire wear particles wash from roads into stormwater and then into streams. Coho are exceptionally sensitive; EPA says stormwater concentrations can be lethal after only hours of exposure.
The cruel part is the timing. The same rain that raises stream flow and can cue coho movement also washes fresh road runoff into the channel.
Washington and EPA are actively researching treatment and alternatives. You can’t fix this one with tackle. But the next time somebody says the storm drain by the highway has nothing to do with salmon, this is the answer.

SPAWNING
The fish spends the whole freshwater return on one chance.
Coho are semelparous. Adults return, spawn once and die. Females dig redds in small-to-medium gravel, males compete for access, and spawning often occurs at night. Eggs incubate through winter and juveniles emerge later in spring.
That makes spawning habitat and juvenile habitat part of the same conservation chain. Clean gravel gets the eggs through incubation. Pools, wood, side channels and flood refuge have to keep the juveniles alive for the long freshwater rearing period that follows.
Run timing changes by latitude and population rather than fitting one North American month. Alaska can begin in summer. Olympic Peninsula fish may enter in early autumn. California runs can extend into winter. Great Lakes fish follow a hatchery-supported cycle of their own.
Use the local run and regulations rather than a generic “coho spawn in fall” calendar.
CURRENT STATUS & RULES
The species is abundant enough to support fisheries and endangered enough to prohibit keeping it in other places.
NOAA’s protected-species page, updated August 13, 2026, lists four West Coast coho ESUs under the Endangered Species Act: Central California Coast is endangered; Lower Columbia River, Oregon Coast, and Southern Oregon/Northern California Coast are threatened.
That status does not describe every coho population. Alaska populations support major fisheries, and Great Lakes coho are an introduced hatchery-supported sport fish. The same species can therefore be a harvest fish, a recovery target or a stocked non-native depending on the basin.
California is the cleanest example of why the local rule belongs with the trip. Current 2026 ocean salmon regulations continue to prohibit taking or possessing coho even where other salmon fishing is open. The open season is not permission to keep every salmon that bites.
Identification becomes part of legal competence right there on the cleaning table: white gums and upper-tail spots are the difference between a legal Chinook and a listed coho lying next to it.
Before targeting anything silver at a river mouth, I would want to know which of these four ESUs I am standing over, because “coho season is open” and “this stretch’s coho are endangered” are both true facts about rivers three hours apart.

GREAT LAKES COHO
Same species, manufactured fishery, different scale.
Michigan introduced coho to Lake Michigan tributaries in 1966, with the first spawning run following in 1967. Natural reproduction occurs, but the fishery remains largely sustained by stocking.
Great Lakes adults average smaller than Pacific fish and feed heavily on alewives and smelt. They can be targeted offshore by trolling and around piers, surf and tributaries during staging and spawning migrations.
The ecological context is also different. Michigan notes competition with steelhead for food resources, but the original research did not identify coho as a broad invasive-control target in the Great Lakes. Calling every introduced fish “invasive” would skip the actual management objective.
This is another reason one universal coho profile used to get unwieldy: Pacific ESA fish and stocked Lake Michigan silvers share a species name and not the same management story.

The source disagreements are real. They are also not the first cast.
How long do juveniles stay in freshwater?
NOAA often summarises the freshwater phase as roughly a year; USFWS gives about 18 months; Alaska documents one to three winters in streams and up to five winters in some lake-rearing fish. Some of the difference is how agencies measure from egg deposition versus emergence, and some is genuine geographic variation. The stable fishing/conservation point is the long freshwater dependence.
How long at sea?
NOAA and Alaska give roughly 18 months for the common adult return, with jacks returning earlier. California and Olympic National Park often describe about two years at sea. Again, geography and counting convention matter more than choosing one number.
Adult size
Pacific agency figures commonly land around 8–12 pounds and 24–30 inches, while Great Lakes fish average smaller. Exceptional records run much larger. Those differences are life-history and fishery context, not a need for a bigger “max size” card.
Urban runoff sensitivity
Coho are extraordinarily sensitive to 6PPD-quinone compared with several other salmonids. The exact cross-species toxicity ranking is still active research. The profile keeps the proven coho lethality without turning it into a universal salmonid rule.
What this profile deliberately does not claim
The original research did not establish universal coho feeding responses to barometric pressure, cold fronts, cloud cover, wind, one exact adult feeding temperature or one river lure category that wins everywhere. Run timing, flow, staging location, prey and presentation path are better-supported questions.
Coho get one shot at reproduction, so a blocked culvert on a two-foot-wide tributary does not get corrected next spring by a bigger run somewhere else — the fish that would have used that exact side channel are simply gone from the math. That single-generation dependency is what takes casual optimism about salmon runs off the table. If you ever end up the one who spots that culvert, you are not filing a complaint. You are deciding whether that side channel gets fish again.
