ICE FISHING · FIRST TRIP

Your First Ice Fishing Trip

What actually matters, and what can wait until winter two.

Somebody’s uncle has a shanty with a heater, a flasher, and eleven rods. None of that catches your first fish through the ice. An auger, a bucket, one rod, and a rough idea where the panfish are sitting will usually do better than a truck full of gear you don’t know how to run yet. The expensive stuff earns its spot eventually. Just not on trip one.

What you actually need

An auger, a bucket to sit on and carry gear in, a small jigging rod, ice picks around your neck, and warmer layers than you think.

What can wait

A shelter, a heater, a flasher or camera, a sled. All genuinely useful, and all of it can show up in winter two.

What actually matters

Ice thickness, checked yourself. Water depth. Fishing near structure or a drop-off, not the dead middle of the lake.

What ends the trip early

Cold you didn’t dress for, and ice you didn’t check. Both are avoidable before you leave the truck.

BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE

Check the ice. Then check it again.

This is the one step I won’t let anyone talk their way past. Bring a spud bar or the auger itself and measure at the shoreline, then again as you move out. Run the number against the job you’re actually doing — use the thickness-reference check for the published minimums and their limits. Until you’ve measured, you don’t have an answer, and somebody else’s footprints heading out there don’t count as one.

Where to actually drill

Panfish — bluegill, crappie, perch — are the honest first target. They school, they forgive imperfect technique, and they’re where I’d point any first-timer, not a single big walleye through a hole the size of a dinner plate.

  1. Start near where summer structure was: a weed edge, a point, a drop-off into deeper water.
  2. Drill several holes early, ten to twenty feet apart, before committing to one spot.
  3. Jig small, and give a lure longer to work than open-water habit tells you to. A slow lift-and-pause beats constant motion under the ice.
  4. Move if twenty minutes produces nothing. Panfish move in loose schools; either the fish weren’t there, or they left.

A HONEST NOTE

Zero fish is still a normal first trip.

Picking where to drill and finding a jig speed the fish will actually put up with are separate skills, and almost nobody gets both right the first time out. If you go home with zero, you’re in very normal company. A slow day tells you where you drilled wrong, or that the school moved on without you. That’s a different problem from a bad pattern on a day the fish were actually biting, so work out which one you had before you blame the gear.
