Heavy shock leader has opinions. Bend it into a neat little loop knot and it springs right back out, and no amount of careful pulling talks it into seating. The Homer Rhode doesn’t bother arguing: it’s two knots a few inches apart, driven together until they jam. Whatever sits between them is your loop. Nobody picks this one because it’s elegant. They pick it because once leader gets heavy enough to stand up on its own, the tidy small-line loop knots stop being tieable, and this one doesn’t stop working.

What holds it
Mono and leader material, up to and including very heavy monofilament.
Loop
Adjustable right up until the final set, and it’s what gives the hook or lure its freedom to move. Size it on purpose, not by accident.
What it’s actually best for
Not finesse — it’s what to reach for when leader is too stiff for anything neater to seat properly. On light tippet there’s no reason to tie it, since the neater loops seat fine there and keep more strength.
Not a guide knot
This is a terminal connection to hardware. It isn’t a line-to-line knot, and it isn’t going through your guides.
Two small knots end up as stops, and the loop is the gap you left between them
You form an overhand-style stop first, run the tag through the hardware, then tie the second knot around the standing line. Pulling those two together fixes the loop size and locks the whole thing. So the sizing decision happens before that pull, not after — jam it at the wrong size and your only edit tool is the nippers. Once they jam, what you have is what you have. That’s less intimidating than it sounds, though, because heavy mono is stiff enough that you can watch the loop the entire time you’re building it, which is more than most knots will give you.
Everything is reversible until the two knots touch
- Tie the first loose stopper or overhand knot in the leader, a few inches back from the tag.
- Pass the tag through the hook or lure eye.
- Bring the tag back and form the second locking knot around the standing leader.
- Set the open-loop size you want now, before any final tightening.
- Set each knot on its own, then pull them together until they jam hard against each other.
- On heavy mono, use safe leverage, and look the leader over for tool damage before you fish it.
Failure clue
The stops never quite jam, which usually means one of them was tied loose to begin with and you didn’t notice until you pulled them together. The loop folds up under load, so it wasn’t actually locked, just resting. The leader picks up a scar while you’re setting it — that’s a tool problem more than a knot problem, and it’s worth switching how you’re gripping it. Or the loop came out bigger than the job needed and starts grabbing everything it goes past, which is annoying rather than dangerous but still means retying it.
When the leader is too stiff for anything neater
Use: heavy mono terminal loop, large hooks/lures. Skip: tiny tippet or when a snug connection is required. Compare: Baja for another heavy-mono loop; Kreh/Rapala for lighter mono/fluoro lure action.
How I check one before it goes on heavy gear
I set each stop knot separately, snug but not jammed, and check the loop size against the lure eye before I pull the two together for good. Once they’re jammed I run my fingers down the leader on both sides feeling for any flat spot or kink from the pliers — that’s usually where it breaks later if it’s going to break at all. - Job. Name what the connection has to do before choosing the knot.
- Material. Confirm the line, leader, rope, wire, and hardware actually suit this structure.
- Route. Trace every pass before tightening anything.
- Dress. Put strands, wraps, and loops in their intended order with no accidental crossings.
- Seat. Tighten in the order this knot needs. More force does not repair bad geometry.
- Test. Inspect the finished shape, load it by hand when appropriate, and retie if anything moves or fails the article-specific checks.

Homer Rhode Loop Knot — the short answers
- ALSO CALLED
- Homer Rhode loop. Named for the Florida Keys guide credited with popularizing it; tarpon, snook and billfish leader work is where it took hold. No meaningful regional alias.
- KNOT TYPE
- Fixed end loop — two jammed overhand stops
- WHAT IT CONNECTS
- Heavy monofilament shock leader to a hook, fly or lure, keeping an open loop at the eye. Not a line-to-line knot, not a light-tippet knot, and not a loop for loop-to-loop work.
- LINE TYPES
- Heavy and very heavy monofilament, the material this exists for. It works in medium mono at a real cost in strength. Do not use it in braid, fine tippet, or wire.
- STRENGTH BAND
- Variable and honestly modest — among the weaker loop knots in the box. The jammed overhands bend the leader sharply, and a share of the leader’s rating is gone before you cast. It is chosen because heavy shock leader has strength to spare.
- DIFFICULTY
- Beginner. Two overhand knots and a decision about where they meet. Easily the simplest loop knot here, and a child can tie it once shown — the judgement is in loop size, not in the hands.
- STEPS AND WRAPS
- Six moves, no wraps at all. That is the whole appeal. Nothing changes for other materials because it is a heavy-mono knot only.
- TIE TIME
- The fastest loop knot in heavy leader. Twenty to thirty seconds, including sizing, which is why guides rig with it when a fish is already showing.
- POOR CONDITIONS
- Very good. Nothing to count, nothing to orient, and stiff leader holds its own shape while you work. It can be tied in gloves and by feel, which few loop knots can.
- THROUGH THE GUIDES
- Bulky and lumpy, and it is not meant to pass guides. It lives at the business end of a short shock leader that stays outside the tip ring.
- LUBRICATION
- Yes, before you jam the two stops together. Heavy mono generates real heat in that final pull, and a dry jam leaves a white stress mark that is the beginning of the break.
- TAG END
- Leave more than you would elsewhere — a quarter of an inch or so on heavy mono, which springs back and can work through a stop tied in slick material. Trim after both stops are hard set.
- TOOLS
- Pliers are genuinely useful for the final set in heavy mono, and are the main risk at the same time. Grip on the tag, never on the standing leader, and check for tool scars afterwards.
- BEST SUITED TO
- Tarpon, snook, barracuda, and other big inshore and offshore fish fished on heavy shock leader, usually behind a class tippet. Common in fly rigs and on large live-bait hooks.
The strength bands are rough on purpose. Published knot tests don’t agree with each other — the same braid-to-leader knot has tested near ninety percent of line strength on one machine and under half on another, because the line brand, its diameter, how fast it got cinched, whether it was wet and whose hands tied it all move the number more than the knot does. Use the band to compare this knot with the others, not as a number to quote.

Where it earns its place, and where it costs you
Advantages
- It is tieable in leader too stiff for tidier loop knots to seat, which is the reason it exists.
- The loop stays genuinely open, so a big streamer or a live-bait hook swims and swings instead of being locked square to the eye — and a large fly on heavy leader is exactly the case where a cinched knot kills the movement.
- Loop size is adjustable right up to the moment the two stops jam, so for once you can set the pivot on purpose and see it while you do.
- Nothing to count and nothing to orient, so it can be tied fast, cold, and in poor light.
- It is easy to inspect: two hard stops touching, and an open loop between them.
Disadvantages
- It buys its simplicity with a real strength cost. Both overhands put a sharp bend in the leader, and it holds noticeably less than a non-slip loop tied in the same material. Only heavy leader can afford that.
- There is no second chance at loop size. Once the stops jam, the loop is what it is, and getting it wrong means cutting it off.
- One stop tied loose will not announce itself; it simply never jams properly and folds up under load.
- The pliers used to set it are the most common source of leader damage on the whole rig.
- It has no place in light line, in braid, or on baits that already pivot on a split ring or a snap.
Use a different knot when
- Non-Slip Loop / Kreh Loop — when you can seat it in the material at hand and want to keep the leader’s strength
- Baja Knot — when you want an open loop in heavy mono that gives away less strength and you have time to build it
- Perfection Loop — when the loop is a leader-butt loop for a loop-to-loop join, not a terminal connection
- A crimp — when the leader is heavier than any knot handles well and the fish justifies the hardware
WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU TRUST IT
Its moment is a heavy shock leader and a fish already in sight. Nothing else ties this fast in stiff mono, and the open loop matters more here than anywhere: a large streamer, a big soft plastic, or a live-bait hook on heavy leader swings and jacks on a loop where a cinched knot pins it square. Baits that gain nothing are the ones already hinged — split rings, snaps, swiveled spoons. Watch the loop, sized deliberately against the eye before the stops meet, because it is the variable most people set by accident. The tradeoff is speed and simplicity against the margin of a snug terminal connection, so the loop has to be there for a reason.
What actually makes it fail
- One stop tied loose, so the two never truly jam and the loop folds under load.
- Setting the stops dry, which leaves a white stress mark in heavy mono right where it will break.
- Plier or tool scarring on the standing leader during the final pull.
- Using it in medium or light line, where the strength it gives away is strength you needed.
- The stops creeping apart in very slick heavy mono when the tag was trimmed too short.
How to test it, and how it ages
Set each stop on its own, snug but not jammed, and hold the loop against the hook eye to confirm the size before you commit. Wet it, then draw the two stops together hard — they should meet and stay met with no gap you can rock open with a fingernail. Then run your fingers down both sides of the leader feeling for a flat spot, kink or scar. Finish with a firm steady pull, not a snatch. Any whitening means cut it off.
Over a session: Adequate but worth watching. The stops stay put once jammed, but the loop wears where the eye rides on it and heavy mono takes a set over a session. Retie after a big fish, and check for scarring every time the leader has been through structure or a set of pliers.
Troubleshooting
Why did it break well below what the leader should take?
That is the knot being honest with you. It is not a strong loop and it never was. Use it only where the leader has strength to spare, and switch to a non-slip loop or a Baja if you need the rating.
Why will the two knots not jam together?
One of them was tied loose. Set each stop separately and firmly before you pull them into each other.
My loop came out too big. Can I shrink it?
No. Loop size is fixed the moment the stops touch. Cut it off and retie — it takes half a minute.
Why does the leader keep breaking at the pliers, not the knot?
Because the pliers scarred it. Grip the tag, never the standing leader, and inspect for flat spots before you fish it.
Should I use this on light tippet since it is so easy?
No. It gives away too much on light line, and better loop knots seat fine in material that thin.
