SLIDING FLOAT · ADJUSTABLE STOP
Suspended crappie don’t care that you set your float at six feet because six feet sounded right. Finding them is a few inches at a time, and this little knot is what lets you do that without re-rigging. Every other knot in your box is supposed to stay put. This one has to grip the main line through casts and drifts and then move anyway the second your fingers push it. And it has to stay small while doing both, because it rides through every guide on every cast.

Main line
Used over the fishing main line above a sliding float/bead system.
What it’s actually best for
Hunting for the right depth without re-rigging, not permanence. Trim the tags, but leave enough that you can retighten it later. The knot should pass the guides without snagging every cast.
Adjustment
Move it by hand only. If it’s creeping under casting or fishing load, add grip or retie it — don’t just keep sliding it back where you want it and hoping.
The stopper cord grips the main line without becoming part of it
A short stopper strand lies parallel to the main line, wraps around both itself and the main line several times, then returns through its own loop. Pulling the two stopper ends draws all of that down into a small friction sleeve sitting on the main line. That sleeve is the entire mechanism. More wraps buy you more grip and also a bigger lump to drag through the guides, so where you settle between those two depends on how slick your stopper material is and how hard you’re throwing it. I learned that balance mostly by getting it wrong in both directions before I found the middle.
Lay it parallel, wrap it, then shrink it down
- Lay a short stopper strand parallel to the main line and form a working loop.
- Wrap the stopper tag around main line and stopper standing section multiple times.
- Pass the tag back through the original stopper loop.
- Wet it if the material calls for it, then pull both stopper ends to close the sleeve onto the main line.
- Trim stopper tags to a guide-friendly length while preserving enough to retighten.
- Slide the stop to the depth you want, then load it up and make sure it isn’t creeping.
Failure clue
The stopper material is too slick or too thin to bite. The wraps piled over each other instead of lying side by side. The tags got cut so short there’s nothing left to retighten with, which I’ve done more than once trying to make a stopper look neat. Or the knot came out oversized and now it knocks its way through the guides on every cast. Slick stopper material is the sneaky one, because the knot feels solid in your hands on the bank and only starts creeping once a float and a sinker are actually hanging off it and casting has worked it loose.
Sliding floats yes, fly indicators no
Use: adjustable sliding-float depth control. Skip: fixed-float systems or where commercial stops are more appropriate. Compare: strike-indicator knots serve fly-leader indicators, not bobber beads.
How I check mine before it goes back in the water
After I tie it, I slide it by hand to confirm it moves with real but reasonable resistance, then I cast it a few times and check it hasn’t crept before I start actually fishing. If it’s sliding on its own after a handful of casts, I add a couple more wraps rather than keep re-cinching the same weak one. THE SIX-MOVE CHECK

- Job. Name what the connection has to do before choosing the knot.
- Material. Confirm the line, leader, rope, wire, and hardware actually suit this structure.
- Route. Trace every pass before tightening anything.
- Dress. Put strands, wraps, and loops in their intended order with no accidental crossings.
- Seat. Tighten in the order this knot needs. More force does not repair bad geometry.
- Test. Inspect the finished shape, load it by hand when appropriate, and retie if anything moves or fails the article-specific checks.

Bobber Stopper Knot — the short answers
- ALSO CALLED
- Float stop knot, slip bobber stop, sliding float stop. Standard among crappie, walleye and panfish anglers on slip floats, and among float fishermen chasing steelhead and salmon in deep water.
- KNOT TYPE
- Sliding stopper knot tied in a separate strand around the main line
- WHAT IT CONNECTS
- Sets the fishing depth of a sliding float by gripping the main line above it. It connects nothing — it is a movable stop, and it never carries the fish load.
- LINE TYPES
- Tied in stopper cord, Dacron or mono of similar diameter, gripping a mono, fluoro or braid main line. Braid main line is where it creeps, because there is less texture for the sleeve to bite.
- STRENGTH BAND
- Not a strength knot — it is a holding device. The main line runs straight through it, so it never sees fish load. What matters is grip against creep, not breaking strain.
- DIFFICULTY
- Beginner. Anyone who can tie a Uni can tie this, and children pick it up quickly. The judgement, not the tying, is the part that takes a season.
- STEPS AND WRAPS
- Six moves and five to seven wraps around the main line and the stopper’s own standing part. More wraps buy grip and cost bulk, which is the whole balance of the knot.
- TIE TIME
- Fast — fifteen to thirty seconds. Many anglers still tie a handful at home onto a plastic tube and slide them on ready-made, because the material is small and fiddly.
- POOR CONDITIONS
- Fiddly in the cold. The stopper strand is short, thin and easily dropped over the side, and low light hides whether the wraps are stacking. Pre-tied stops solve this properly.
- THROUGH THE GUIDES
- This is the constraint that shapes the knot. It runs through every guide and onto the spool on every cast, so it has to stay small and smooth, while still being too big to pass the bead into the float bore.
- LUBRICATION
- Wet it as you close it. A dry sleeve cinching down on the main line scores it, and the main line is the one thing here that must survive. Do not over-lubricate on braid, where it already wants to slide.
- TAG END
- Leave a quarter inch or so on each tag, deliberately longer than looks tidy. Those tags are how you retighten it later, and cut flush you have nothing to grip and no second chance.
- TOOLS
- None. Commercial rubber stops on a tube do the same job with no tying and are worth carrying, especially if you fish braid main line.
- BEST SUITED TO
- Crappie, walleye, perch and panfish under slip floats; steelhead, salmon, catfish and striped bass in deeper water. Chosen by rig type — anywhere the float has to slide for casting.
The strength bands are rough on purpose. Published knot tests don’t agree with each other — the same braid-to-leader knot has tested near ninety percent of line strength on one machine and under half on another, because the line brand, its diameter, how fast it got cinched, whether it was wet and whose hands tied it all move the number more than the knot does. Use the band to compare this knot with the others, not as a number to quote.
FIELD INTELLIGENCE
Where it earns its place, and where it costs you
Advantages
- Depth is adjustable by hand in seconds, so you can hunt suspended fish a few inches at a time without re-rigging.
- It passes through the guides and onto the spool, which lets the float slide down to the sinker for casting and back up on the drop.
- Nothing is cut or joined in the main line, so the rig has no added weak point.
- Grip is tunable. Add or drop a wrap to suit the main line and how hard you are casting.
- Costs almost nothing and can be tied from spare line when you run out of shop-bought stops.
Disadvantages
- Grip and bulk pull against each other. Enough wraps to hold on braid can be enough to knock through the guides on every cast.
- Slick or thin stopper material feels solid in the hand and creeps once a float, sinker and casting load are on it.
- Trim the tags too short and the knot cannot be retightened, which is the usual reason a stop gets replaced.
- It loosens gradually with use, so the depth you set is not the depth you have an hour later unless you check it.
- On braid main line it is the least reliable of the stop options, and a rubber stop is often the honest answer.
Use a different knot when
- Commercial rubber float stops — when the main line is braid, or when you want the depth set once and left alone all day
- A Uni Knot tied in stopper cord around the main line — when you want the same job from a structure your hands already know
- A fixed float pegged at depth — when the water is shallow enough to cast a fixed float and the sliding rig buys nothing
- Strike-indicator knots — when the job is holding an indicator on a fly leader rather than stopping a bobber
WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU TRUST IT
Grip and slide are at war in this knot, and once you see that, the rest is feel. It has to grip the main line hard enough to hold depth through casts and drifts, and it has to run through every guide and lie on the spool without catching. Judge it by feel: it should move under firm thumb pressure and resist lighter contact. Then watch for creep after the first few casts, because a stop that walks suggests the material is too slick, the wraps are too few, or the knot was not seated firmly enough. Adding a wrap is the fix. Sliding it back and re-cinching the same tired sleeve is not.
What actually makes it fail
- Stopper material too slick or too fine to bite, so the sleeve polishes the main line and walks.
- Wraps piled over each other instead of lying side by side, so the sleeve grips in one spot.
- Tags trimmed flush, leaving nothing to retighten with once it starts to slip.
- Too many wraps, giving a lump that knocks through the guides and eventually catches on a hard cast.
- A dry cinch that scores the main line under the sleeve, which shows up later as a break at the stop.
How to test it, and how it ages
Set it, then test it in both directions. Push it along the main line with a thumbnail: it should move with real but reasonable resistance, not glide. Then hang the float and sinker on and make half a dozen casts before you start fishing, and check the stop is still where you left it. Look at the main line under the sleeve when you move it — any dulled or flattened patch means it was cinched dry and that stretch of line is now suspect. A stop that slides easily on the bank will slide when a fish is on.
Over a session: It loosens as the day goes on, which is normal rather than a fault, so expect to nip it up or add a wrap partway through a session. Any stop that has been moved many times should be replaced rather than re-cinched, and check the main line where it has been sitting.
Troubleshooting
Why does it keep sliding down the line?
Either the stopper material is too slick for your main line or you are a wrap short. Add a wrap first; if it still walks on braid, use a rubber stop and stop fighting it.
Why does it catch in the guides on the cast?
The knot is too big, usually from too many wraps or tags left long enough to flag. Drop a wrap and trim the tags back to about a quarter inch — enough to grip, not enough to catch.
Why won’t it retighten anymore?
The tags got cut flush, so there’s nothing left to pull on. Cut it off and tie a fresh one, leaving more tag than looks neat.
Why did my main line break at the float stop?
The sleeve was cinched dry and scored the line underneath. Wet it as it closes, and when a stop has sat in one place a long time move it and look at the line before you trust that stretch.
Should the knot pass through the float?
No. It should pass the guides but not the bead, which is what actually stops the float. If it is pulling through the bead, use a smaller-holed bead or add a wrap for bulk.
