How to Tie the Arbor Knot, the Least Important Knot on Your Reel

The arbor knot has one job: hold still while line goes onto the spool. The second overhand only exists to stop the first, and braid on a slick spool needs more help than either one gives.

SPOOL CONNECTION · START OF THE SYSTEM

Hand somebody a brand-new reel and a fresh spool of mono and they will tie the arbor knot like it needs to survive a marlin. Ask what the knot actually has to do and the answer shrinks fast: hold still while you crank two hundred yards onto the spool. That’s the whole job. It anchors the beginning of the fill. It was never designed to take the load once the spool has run down to bare metal.

Structure

One overhand knot around the standing line plus a second overhand stop knot in the tag.

Braid warning

Slick braid can spin on a smooth spool. Use appropriate backing or a reel-specific braid attachment method. Don’t assume the Arbor Knot alone will grip. Braid on a bare, smooth spool has nothing to bite into, and the whole wrap just spins.

Reality check

If I can see the arbor knot while I’m fighting a fish, the knot isn’t my problem. I’m nearly out of line, and that’s a different conversation entirely.

TWO SIMPLE KNOTS DO DIFFERENT JOBS

The second knot only exists to stop the first one.

Wrap the line around the spool arbor and tie an overhand knot around the standing line. That one slides. Then tie a second overhand knot in the tag end only, a short way beyond it. When you pull the standing line, the second knot runs down and jams against the first, and the tag can’t pull through.

It’s meant to be this plain. Dressing it up with extra wraps just buries a bigger lump under the first layer of line. Spool fill, backing choice, line capacity and the drag system are what actually matter once you’re fishing. The Arbor Knot just gets the line started on the spool without any drama.

Around the arbor, then two overhands

  1. Pass the line around the spool arbor.
  2. Tie an overhand knot in the tag end around the standing line. Leave it loose enough to slide.
  3. Tie a second overhand knot in the tag end itself, a short distance beyond the first.
  4. Pull the standing line. The first knot slides toward the spool until the second stop knot jams against it.
  5. Snug the connection to the arbor, trim excess tag, then begin filling the spool under the correct line tension.

Correct fill level matters more to casting than making the arbor knot unnecessarily elaborate.

The Arbor Knot commonly attaches backing to the reel before the rest of the backing/fly-line system is built.

Braid

Prevent spool slip with an appropriate backing or braid-ready method. A knot that holds to itself doesn’t guarantee the line grips the spool.

HOW I CHECK MYSELF

I watch the stop knot slide down and seat before I ever start cranking line on.

It takes a few seconds, which makes it the cheapest check in the whole spooling job. If the stopper doesn’t jam clean against the first knot, you want to know now, not a couple hundred yards into the fill.

THE SIX-MOVE CHECK

Job → Material → Route → Dress → Seat → Test

  1. Job. Name what the connection has to do before choosing the knot.
  2. Material. Confirm the line, leader, rope, wire, and hardware actually suit this structure.
  3. Route. Trace every pass before tightening anything.
  4. Dress. Put strands, wraps, and loops in their intended order with no accidental crossings.
  5. Seat. Tighten in the order this knot needs. More force does not repair bad geometry.
  6. Test. Inspect the finished shape, load it by hand when appropriate, and retie if anything moves or fails the article-specific checks.

Practice / pass test. Tie this knot three clean times without rushing. A tie passes only when it matches this article’s What to check before you trust it geometry, shows none of the listed failure clues, and survives the stated load/inspection test. If you cannot tell why one attempt is better than another, keep practicing—the lesson is recognition, not memorization.

Arbor Knot — the short answers

ALSO CALLED
Arbor Knot, sometimes called the reel knot or spool knot. Structurally it is the same arrangement as the canvas or reel hitch used elsewhere. Used by anyone who spools their own reels, freshwater and salt alike.
KNOT TYPE
Spool knot — sliding overhand with an overhand stopper in the tag
WHAT IT CONNECTS
Attaches line or backing to a reel arbor before the spool is filled. It is not a terminal knot, not a line-to-line knot, and not something to trust once the spool has run down to bare metal.
LINE TYPES
Monofilament and fluorocarbon hold fine. Braid is the problem — the knot may grip itself perfectly while the whole wrap spins around a smooth spool. Braid setups want mono backing, tape, or a braid-ready spool attachment.
STRENGTH BAND
Not a strength knot — structural and holding. It has one job, which is to stay put while you crank line on. If the arbor knot is taking real load, you are down to bare spool and the knot is the smallest of your problems.
DIFFICULTY
Beginner. Two overhand knots. Children can tie it, and it is a good first knot precisely because nothing important rides on getting it perfect.
STEPS AND WRAPS
Five moves and no wrap count. One overhand around the standing line, one overhand in the tag alone. Nothing changes for braid except that the knot is no longer sufficient by itself.
TIE TIME
Very fast — a bench knot rather than a boat knot, because you tie it at home while spooling. Ten to fifteen seconds.
POOR CONDITIONS
You almost never tie this in bad conditions; it belongs to the workbench or the tailgate. If you do have to respool in the wind, the moves are short enough to manage with cold hands.
THROUGH THE GUIDES
Never passes rod guides in normal use — it lives at the arbor under a full spool of line. The relevant question is whether it sits flat against the arbor rather than lumping under the first layers of fill.
LUBRICATION
Optional and largely irrelevant. Lubrication is not what makes this knot work. A drop of water helps the stopper seat cleanly against the first knot on heavy mono, and nothing worse than a slightly untidy jam happens without it.
TAG END
Trim to about a quarter inch. There is no benefit to a long tag under the fill, and a long stub can lump up the first layer of line on the spool.
TOOLS
None. Clippers to trim. On braid, the genuinely useful items are not knot tools at all — a strip of tape or a length of mono backing to give the spool something to grip.
BEST SUITED TO
Not species-specific — it is the start of every reel fill, from panfish spinning reels to fly reels taking backing. It suits any reel, and should not be trusted as the connection a running fish loads.

The strength bands are rough on purpose. Published knot tests don’t agree with each other — the same braid-to-leader knot has tested near ninety percent of line strength on one machine and under half on another, because the line brand, its diameter, how fast it got cinched, whether it was wet and whose hands tied it all move the number more than the knot does. Use the band to compare this knot with the others, not as a number to quote.

FIELD INTELLIGENCE

Where it earns its place, and where it costs you

Advantages

  • It is quick, and there is nothing to memorize beyond two overhand knots.
  • It slides down and jams itself tight against the arbor, so it self-seats when you pull the standing line.
  • It works with any monofilament and fluorocarbon without adjustment for diameter.
  • It is easy to inspect — you can see the stopper jam against the sliding knot before you crank a single turn on.

Disadvantages

  • It does nothing about spool slip. On smooth spools with braid, the whole wrap can rotate no matter how well the knot is tied.
  • It is not a load-bearing connection, and the reel manual’s spooling guidance outranks it.
  • A tag trimmed too long lumps under the first layers of line.
  • It is difficult to untie after the spool has been under tension, which matters when you strip old line off.

Use a different knot when

  • 100 Percent Arbor Knot — when fly backing may become part of the loaded fighting system and you want a doubled, purpose-built arbor connection rather than a simple spool attachment
  • Mono backing or tape under braid — when the spool is smooth — the fix for braid slip is friction against the spool, not a better knot
  • Uni Knot to the arbor — when you want one familiar structure that also seats neatly around a spool
  • The reel’s own braid-ready attachment — when the manufacturer has built a slot, clip or rubberized band for the job

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU TRUST IT

The arbor knot earns its place by being unimportant, and that is worth stating plainly. It anchors the beginning of a spool fill and nothing else, so effort spent making it elaborate is effort taken from the things that actually decide a day: fill level, backing choice, line capacity and drag. The useful check is not the knot but the grip — give the spool a firm pull on the standing line and see whether the whole wrap rotates. On braid over a slick spool it often will, and no amount of knot craft fixes that. Backing or tape does.

What actually makes it fail

  • The whole wrap spinning around a smooth spool, most often with braid, so the knot holds while the line does not.
  • The stopper knot missing entirely, so the sliding overhand simply pulls off the tag end.
  • The stopper tied too far from the first knot, leaving a loose span that lets the connection shift under fill tension.
  • A tag trimmed long enough to lump under the first layers and disturb the fill.
  • Running the spool down to bare arbor during a fight, which asks the knot to do a job it was never built for.

How to test it, and how it ages

Test it before you crank a single yard on. Pull the standing line firmly and watch two things: the stopper should jam hard against the sliding knot, and the wrap should bite the arbor rather than rotate around it. If the line spins on the spool, stop and fix the grip with mono backing or tape rather than retying. Once you are filling, keep steady tension on the line so the first layers bed down; a loose base is what causes line to dig in later.

Over a session: It lasts as long as the line does, buried under the fill and never touched. The connection to watch over time is not the knot but the first few layers — line spooled slack will dig into itself under a hard run regardless of how well the arbor knot seated.

Troubleshooting

Why does my braid spin around the spool?

Because braid is slick and the spool is smooth. The knot is fine; the grip is not. Put mono backing or a strip of tape down first, or use the reel’s braid-ready attachment.

Why does the tag pull straight out?

You skipped the second overhand, or tied it in the standing line instead of the tag. The stopper must be in the tag alone, a short way beyond the first knot.

Does the arbor knot need to be strong?

No. If it is bearing load you have run out of line. Spend the attention on fill level and drag instead.

How much tag should I leave?

About a quarter inch. Long tags lump under the first layers of line and can disturb the fill.

Why is it impossible to untie when I strip old line off?

It jams by design, and a season of fill tension sets it. Cut it off. There is no reason to preserve it.
