A fish comes up behind the lure, follows it most of the way in, and peels off without touching it. It isn’t even out of sight yet and the theory’s already built. Too bright, probably. Or they’re keyed on bait and that lure looks like nothing they’ve eaten all week.

Read the speed change before the spot.
That reflex is a big part of what makes anybody decent at this. It also runs way out ahead of the evidence, and left alone it’ll talk you into a lot of lure changes the fish never asked for.
What I can actually point at
An observation is something you saw, felt, heard or measured. The lure ticked rock after a six-count sink, say, and two follows quit right where it crossed out of shade into bright water. None of that is a pattern yet — it’s the stuff a pattern gets built out of.
“The water looked weird” gives me nothing to work with. “Visibility was lower near the inflow than along the protected bank” gives me two places and an actual difference between them.
I’ve stood next to people reading a piece of water and felt like they were seeing something I couldn’t. Mostly they weren’t. They were noticing more things and calling fewer of them settled, which is practice, not eyesight — and practice is the part you can go get. A lot of it happens in the first five minutes at the water, before the first cast that counts.
A number without a method
Numbers are persuasive out of all proportion to how much they actually say.
A surface temperature at the ramp isn’t the temperature several feet down. A six-count sink isn’t six feet — it’s six counts, and the weight, the line, the current and how fast you count all get a vote. A gauge reading describes the station where it was taken and not much else.
When a number matters, I write down where, when and how I got it. A rough estimate labeled as rough beats a precise-looking number I can’t place.
Where did that come from
Weather reports, gauges, regulations, maps, release notices, a message from somebody who was out there Tuesday — all of it feeds the plan, and none of it is worth the same as the rest. Current official sources decide legal access, closures, rules and the safety calls. That part isn’t up for a vote.
A post from two weeks ago is worth an idea. It isn’t worth a conclusion about where fish are today, so the source and the date stay attached to anything that changes fast, which around water is most things.
Say it’s a guess and it turns testable
“Two fish followed the lure into the shadow” is an observation. “The fish are using the shadow for cover” is an explanation, and it might be right. They might also be tracking bait along a depth change, or just going somewhere and passing the lure on the way.
Same goes for whatever I showed up believing. Fish should be shallow. The rain probably stained the creek. Those are fine for choosing a first cast and terrible as permanent employees, and when the water keeps disagreeing, the idea goes.
“I started on the shallow edge because the water had been warming” is honest. “The warming water put them shallow” is a claim, and the day owes me some support before I get to write it. Once I’ve admitted something’s a guess, I can test it instead of defending it.
One fish on a red lure
A fish caught on a red lure proves a fish ate a red lure. That’s the whole finding.
What else moved? Maybe the cast angle was different, or it ran deeper that time, or the wind finally eased off enough to feel the line. Maybe that fish was sitting beside cover nothing had touched yet. You’ve got a lane worth repeating. You don’t necessarily know which part of the lane did the work, and that gap shows up the second you try to reproduce it somewhere else.
I test one thing on the next cast
Say two follows quit at a bright-water edge and the idea is that light is doing it. Hold the lure, depth and speed roughly where they were, and go find another shaded edge or take a different angle through the same light line. Swapping lure, color, depth, speed, location and line all at once answers nothing.
This isn’t a laboratory. Wind shifts and casts wander. I’m only trying not to add confusion on purpose.
Phrasing that keeps the door open
Instead of “the fish are deep,” my notes say “the only contact came deeper than the first two areas tested.” The rain didn’t “kill the bite” either — flow and clarity changed after the rain, and the earlier presentation quit producing. And “they wanted red” shrinks down to “red produced two responses during that stretch.”
It reads timid. It isn’t. It’s the version that’s still useful a month from now, because it says what happened and leaves the open question open.
A blank cast has limits
No response tells you almost nothing when the lure never reached depth, dragged weeds, or crossed the seam too fast to matter. Three clean casts that actually tested the water teach more than ten you weren’t really controlling.
Even then, “no response” is the honest phrase. “No fish” is a bigger claim than one bank can support. They may well have been sitting right there, declining to participate.
It has to repeat
A pattern earns my confidence when it shows up again on another feature or another day. Fish responding along several shaded depth edges and nothing around bright shallow cover — the idea’s holding. Everything coming off one dock is thinner than it looks: maybe it’s the shade, or maybe it’s that dock, which also has pilings and depth and whatever’s living under it.
A real pattern hands you the next place to try. If it doesn’t point anywhere, it isn’t finished.
I’m stricter when being wrong costs more
A loose guess about lure color costs a few casts. A loose guess about lightning, rising water, ice I’m not sure of, property lines, identifying a fish before I keep it, or gear that’s about to fail costs a whole lot more than that. Those calls go to current official sources for rules, closures, access, weather, flow, releases and water quality, and the more being wrong costs, the more proof I want before I act.
Four lines
The note I keep after a stretch like this is four lines long: what directly happened, whether any outside information steered the decision, what the clues might mean, and the one change that would support or weaken that idea.
Like this: “Two follows stopped at the bright edge. The cloud cover stayed broken. Lower light may be letting fish finish the approach. Test the same depth and retrieve along the next shaded edge.”
Built as a field note aimed at the next decision, it outlives the trip. The next time you walk up to that water, you get to start at line four.
